XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

You're mistaking our fervor for emotional investment. We like the gunboat. For many of us, it's our favorite Star Wars starfighter. We'd be super happy to see it in the game, but that doesn't mean we'll be absolutely inconsolable if it is never added. It's fun to hope and experience the hype for each wave, cross our fingers, and see what what is released. Even if it is never released, we'll still talk about it. Why would we not?

Stage 1

You're mistaking our fervor for emotional investment.

No, no. He's got a point. I am totally emotionally invested in that ship.

Stage 4, almost there.

To this day, I still cannot explain myself what made FFG choose the TIE Punisher over, basically, any other ship in the EU.

Wave 7 was about ordnance and bombs, and that is okay, but the choice seems completely arbitrary, considering that the Missile Boat, a special re-issue of the TIE Bomber, the Skypray or even, why not, the Gunboat could have played the role of heavy bomber for the Empire in that wave.

Instead they went for something totally obscure and that has probably had the least screen time ever: the tier 3 upgrade looks of a TIE Bomber in a game as obscure as Galactic Battlegrounds.

Is it really so important for them that all Imperial ships must look like TIEs?

Stage 2. tsk tsk

I only have to go through the stages of grief when Disney officially kills the Gunboat. Heck I would have never guessed my all time favorite ship the Punishing one would be included, I mean if it weren't for star wars ccg I doubt anyone would even know what it looks like.

I fully expect that over time these ships will come in, I mean they need to keep making ships afterall. Just look at the recent article about the tractor beam, sometimes they have stuff in the works, it just isn't ready for prime time yet.

See, out of all those. Only ONE ship I dislike.

I like the scimitar, (tar and feather me all you want) I like the escort shuttle enough to have bought and painted one. The skipray is a classic, the avenger is awesome.

Missileboat is a tad mary suish but. you know what, I get it. plus it looks unique.

May I remind you all again that as of 2015 THE DX-9 IS CANON!!!

As of 2015 XQ PLATFORMS ARE CANON.

There is hope.

Gunboat, Missile Boat and Avenger... come to papa.

As of 2015 the Interdictor Cruiser is canon as well.

Not that canon really matters all that much, in a game that already contains the E-Wing and K-Wing.

Yeah, see the Gunboat looks way too big for a small base there. It's like twice the width of a Bomber, so probably a little wider than a K-wing and they're already too big for a small base.

The Skipray looks like it would fit a small base though.

I know it's an odd angle for the shot but that's around backwards. The Blastboat is something like 25m long, and the Gunboat is only 10m (shorter than an X-Wing although its profile is pretty significant).

I guess I'm in the "Denial" stage, as I think the Gunboat and the Skipray will both eventually be released. So, what stage is it if they actually do get released?

It's width, not length, that I'd be most concerned about. If it's even close to as wide as a K-wing it's going to get in the way.

Unless it has sweet-ass folding wings like the Lambda in which case no worries.

All four lateral wings do fold up!

I don't know if FFG would make the model do that but I'm absolutely going to mod a few to do it.

As far as Gunboat width, the Wookiee says about 15m which isn't too much wider than an X-Wing is long. Seems about the same width as a K-Wing, right?

I know they fold up fluff-wise, but I think the mini would have to fold to be functional.

I feel like that's a lot to ask of 1.5" x 2.5" x 1" of moulded plastic. It would be awesome, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

The Lambda only folds because it's big enough to have a clamshell design around the wings. They could do the same for the lower set of wings on the Gunboat but sadly I doubt it would be viable to make the upper set fold on a production model at that scale.

Easy enough for a semi-competent modeller though.

What if tomorrow Alex and Frank start by saying...

"And now, we announce an imperial ship that has been much requested and has a huge loyal fan base among our community.

Behold...

(lifts the curtains)

the TIE Avenger!"

Is your body ready, DarthEnderX?

I'd prefer the TIE Aggressor first, but yes, my body would be fairly well prepared for that.

There were quite a few Force Awakens concept ships doing the rounds, but to be honest I wasn't overly impressed with any of them, so I'm actually quite glad they stuck to a couple of familiar designs.

I really liked all 3 of those *-Wing designs. And the Rebels need more of those anyway.

Having looked it up on the Wookiee, it makes little sense to me from a realistic design standpoint. Two laser cannons, two ion cannons, shields, 12 proton torpedoes, a hyperdrive AND it was "considered to he fastest TIE variant in the Imperial fleet"? All in a ship with a profile which looks physically smaller than a TIE Interceptor? Mary Sue, anyone? I wouldn't begrudge anyone who likes it and wants to see it, but man, to me it makes zero sense.

Agreed. But it's also oldcanon, so they don't have to keep it that way.

Honestly, if all it was was an Interceptor with 2 attack and a Cannon slot, I'd be way happier. There are too many elite shielded TIEs these days and not enough cheap unshielded ones that are supposed to be the line's real focus.

Some 3rd party examples may help. Gosric's is probably the closest in size to the model in FractalSponge's renderings, maybe slightly larger:

Gosric's:

Agreed that the folding Lambda-like wings would be amazing, but not sure if they're feasible. Gosric managed to pull them off of course, but then that man Gosric is a genius and a miracle worker.

You may be right come to think of it. I seem to recall Gosric mentioning his version was slightly overscaled due to incorporating the folding wings as well.

So far, every single Imperial small ship has been propelled by a Twin Ion Engine.

Will Wave 9 break this precedent?

With the TIE/sf still out there in the wild, I'm going to guess no. Unfortunately.

But I remain hopeful. Come on GAMA; Gosric's Gunboat is looking more and more appealing...

If the Gunboat isn't announced I might go ahead and get one of the custom mini's as well. It would be interesting to proxy that with my local group.

Could possibly proxy it as a Punisher, I guess.

Personally, I only really want to pick up 3rd party models which have little to no chance of being produced by FFG themselves, ike the Planetary Defenders (I had a soft spot for those bad boys from X-Wing Alliance). And, er, the Nebulon B.

I've though of that, although I also like the ideas presented much earlier in this thread. I would probably playtest those and see how they work out.

This is my thinking as well. If I think it's going to be produced by FFG, I don't see the use in getting a 3rd party model. Alas, I am an impatient man. If it's not in Wave IX then it's not going to be out for a long time. Might as well go ahead and proxy at that point.

I'm the same. If i get an XG-1 then I am admitting defeat.

I do have a DX-9 but honestly, as much as I'd like to see it, I realize that it doesn't bring anything to the table that the shuttle hasn't already.

My escort shuttle of course is a proxy for imp spray.
