XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

Have you Gun Boat guys tried out the Punisher?

I promise you'll be hugging it after a few games.

*edit: I make no promises.

That's a whole can of worms to be wary of opening. Why in an ordnance wave would they release a weird mutated TIE Bomber instead the ever gloriously beautiful XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault GUNBOAT? :P

That being said, I don't mind the Punisher. I just bought one the other day and have yet to fly it. I don't hate its aesthetics nearly as much as I did when it was announced.

I'm gonna say...because the Gunboat isn't much of an ordnance carrier?

Unless you're confusing it with the Missile Boat.

I understand the gunboat wasn't actually that much of an ordnance carrier, the missile boat was. I just prefer the gunboat to the missile boat. Regardless of whether or not it made perfect sense for the wave, I for one still had my fingers crossed. I'm not upset about it, as I've said, I've grown fond (in a weird way) of the Punisher. I was being a bit facetious. :P

I'd say Wave 7 was probably as much to do with bombs as it was ordnance, if not more. Bombadier, Conner Nets, Cluster Mines, Ion Bombs and Extra Munitions, vs Plasma Torpedoes and Advanced Homing Missiles.

From that point of view I can understand the decision to drop the K-Wing and Punterdictor at the same time.

That said, we're going to need more ways to pick up Extra Munitions, Long Range Scanners and Guidance Chimps... that's where everyone's favourite warhead launchers could potentially come in.

Really glad they released the Punisher instead of the Gunboat, if we are all honest, it doesn't bring anything new to the game, doesn't fit with the X wing aesthetic and looks flaming awaful( no Geko don't show me anyomore rendered images, not interested)

The more new Star Wars material and films that get released just drives more nails in the ugly gunboat coffin.

Putting images here for posterity (Also because I don't like my party being pooped on ;) )

The Punisher is the reason I bought into the game. However, it's a double bomber gimmick without the two unique pilots, and doesn't fit most Imperial lists. Not to mention, most of the ships failed to aspire anything new either. What makes them is their new upgrades and pilots, the aesthetic means jack **** and to be honest, TFA really dropped the ball in that department too. Plus I can't take you serious if you think Rebels has had good ship designs.

To be fair, the Rebels TV Series effectively canonized the Immobilizer-418 Cruiser. Good news for Armada fans everywhere.

And if memory serves, the Interdictor Cruiser was first seen in the original X-Wing game back in 1993... alongside the Assault Gunboat.

Technically correct (the best kind) it was shown in TOD 2 or 3 if I recall, for one cutscene. The Assault gunboat however of course made it's first appearance as a mysterious big bad blowing up a rebel base in atmosphere, and later as pretty hardcore tanky opposition.

Since you can't get it in your head that the Punisher is more of an analogue to the Missile boat, since apparently guns and missiles are confusing? I'll show you the door, since you clearly have no idea what you're talking about and are only in a pro-gunboat thread to cause trouble.

Door's over there.

Don't mind Ashley, he's an Imperial boy through and through really and is just trying a little reverse psychology. He'll be one of the first in line when the Gunboat finally hits the shelves.

Actually, Tarkin did that. It also appeared in Heir to the Jedi.

The Rebels ship is larger - given that Heir to the Jedi mentioned that Star Destroyers with gravity well projectors are replacing the Immobilizer-418 (though some are still in service) the Rebels ship may be one of those.

Hypothetically speaking, if the gunboat was never added to the game what do you think would happen? Would this thread continue on about how lacking the game is without this nostalgia icon and how FFG failed to fill in a very clear niche in imperial squads? Would people still come in to disparage it then have their statements systematically and efficiently broken down and then shown the door?

Probably yeah. But wouldn't we all? :P

Sorry to be the "Well, actually..." nerd here, but it was Tour of Duty IV, Imperial Pursuit. ;) You draw the Empire's attention to draw the interdictors away from the shipyards where they are building star destroyers.

I think they meant to add Interdictors to the actual missions, but for some reason they couldn't. There is a couple of missions where a rebel cruiser is "trapped" by 3 frigates and you need to destroy them so that the cruiser can escape to hyperspace. I think those frigates were meant to be placeholders for the interdictors.

Nono, the well actually is appreciated - I had an inkling it may have been IV but figured it was far too late. I know it had something to do with the Rams Head.

You're probably right re: placeholders, not just in xwing but the entire series...

FFG- Thank you for not making this terrible ship before making the uglies for scum.

Being shown the door in 3...2...1...

I don't understand how people find the Assault Gunboat so offensive that they feel they have to weigh in and essentially try to spit in the faces of the people who like it. You see people talking about a starship that they're obviously excited about, and you feel the need to join the conversation only long enough to drop some negative spiteful comment about it. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with you not liking it. I'm fine with you thinking it doesn't have a place. You can think whatever you want, but why do you have to come take a dump on our parade?

The first dozen times it happened, I just laughed it off. Who cares? But I'll admit I've slipped and let it get to me. It's just petty and it's getting annoying.

Note: I don't mean comments and discussion on whether or not you want it. That's fine. Just the "I hate the thing. It's ugly. I'm glad they haven't/will never make it." kind of crap.

GTFO :-(

I want scum to get Uglies like the Chir'daki or Invid Clutch.

It's a good point. You have to seriously question the motives of people who do that, because on the face of it it's purely antagonistic.

Now don't get me wrong, there are ships I wouldn't be particularly interested in seeing, but I wouldn't then go into a dedicated thread about them and try to provoke the posters who actually do want to see them.

Mind you, other than the Imperial Huge Ship thread, I don't recall seeing another ship topic go on this long or generate this much interest, and it had the same problems.

I find shocking that some people call the XG-1 ugly in an universe where there exists the Y-Wing, the Millenium Falcon, the E-Wing, the K-Wing, the Outrider, the StarViper, the YV-666, the Mist Hunter... Geez... the Slave-I! Basically most of the Star Wars ships are objectively ugly. And I love most of those ships. But it's what we call "Star Wars ugly". It is what makes a ship distinctively Star Wars, and we don't mistake it with any other franchise. Some ugly, unlikely shape flying with a random end pointing forward. If we didn't see before, how many of us would know how a Firespray, B-Wing or YT-1300 fly?

There is less than a handful of ships that don't look like something out of Wacky Races. The A-wing, most prequel ships, the Kihraxz, and perhaps the X-Wing/Z-95.

Seriously, who would see a TIE for first time and identify it with a spaceship? It's a ball with earpads!

And the XG-1 is ugly? Give me a break!

A-wings way too small/cramped to be practical as anything but a drag racer...
