XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

Oh for a fully-modernised HD version of the X-Wing series.

The XWA Update guys have done a fantastic job, but I can't help but think what could be done on current gen technology.

I think the thing I'd want even more than that is a pass through the games 'updating' them to include the new canon stuff since their original release. IE., the Empire doesn't run CR-90s, but instead Imperial Raiders as their 'corvette'. Nor do they use Nebulon-B frigates, and instead favor the Arquitens-class cruisers for that role. I doubt we'll ever see a 'Dreadnought' that looks like the ones so far used in the games, so maybe pull in the Clone Wars-era Venator or Acclamator-class cruisers. etc.

Or leave it because there's no reason to do so.

Or leave it because there's no reason to do so.

Keep playing the original then.

The latest rebels episode demonstrates the 'theft' of ships by the Alliance. Basically sympathetic worlds like Alderaan allow their ships to be stolen to create plausible deniability. Even at this early point the Imperials have noticed that Alderaan looses alot of ships to the rebels.

So basically the Nebulon-B would fit MUCH better in this kind of scenario instead of being an imperial front line warship that just happens to be stolen in bulk. Or are we supposed to believe frigate crews are far more susceptible to mutiny than other ship crews?

GUNBOAT!

Actually that should be correct. In the original lore, the Rebel Alliance stole most of its fleet from the imperial fleets and imperial manufacturers.

YES! GUNBOAT! FFG, PLEASE, GUNBOAT.

I'm well aware of the WEG-originated EU that for 20+ years had rebels steal and otherwise aquire only non-wedge shaped Imperial capital ships while manufacturing their own starships instead of TIE advanced, GUNBOATS, and even basic TIE Fighters and just slapping shields and hyperdrives on them.

As far as the OT and other current canon sources go, the Rebels received their weapons and vehicles from sympathetic worlds with the pretense of 'theft' being the preferred mode acquisition. And the rebels logically would have disrupted imperial supply lines to cripple manufacturing of enemy weapons, but appearantly never use Imperial ships unless on covert missions (Sabine's TIE, Tyderium) despite actual theft of a Gozanti and an Adv. TIE Prototype.

On another note I would love to see a true sequel to TIE Fighter based on the lead up to the Thrawn campaign in the Zahn books, with a new emphasis on planetary assualts with Bombers and Scimitars and GUNBOATS (and maybe Punishers). I wouldn't hate seeing I-7s or A-9s either. Call it TIE Bomber. And a third installment to finish out the Imperial Trilogy, based on the campaigns leading up to and including the Battle of Jakku with EVERY known TIE variant available. Call it TIE Fighter Last Stand. Each game should have a new protagonist but feature Maarek Stele as an NPC officer who can bust the player's chops for being stupid after a failed mission.

I do. Still (stele) great after 2 decades.

Somwhere, I've got the notes I made rereading the Thrawn Trilogy with an eye towards playing an Imperial AoR RPG with that premice...

I would love to play a new TIE Fighter set in and around the Thrawn trilogy, but they don't make games set in the EU anymore.

So? He's Fleet Admiral instead of Grand Admiral, and he's defeated at Jakku instead of Bilbring

Thrawn will always be the Vice Admiral I served under in my tours of service.

We anyways need a new good space sim like TIE Fighter. Especially one we can play on the Empire's side.

FFG Gunboat pls

If they decided to do that, I wouldn't complain.

It still kinda surprises me that they haven't dipped into the X-Wing games. I mean, there are obscure ships and characters from comic books the average person never read, but it is missing ships from the games that helped re-launch Star Wars as a license for video games and such? I mean, how does th TIE Copypastisher make it but not the gunboat?

The real missed opportunity was releasing the Defender and not the GUNBOAT. Who wants another silly TIE derivative when you could have a super cool Lambda derivative!

And now FFG thinks we will be placated by Imp Vets with Maarek Stele in a Defender. Well, no sir, he belongs in a GUNBOAT! That's like putting Vader in an Eta-2 when we all know he really belongs in a Pod Racer. Try harder FFG!

The tie defender is your reward for bringing peace and justice to the galaxy.

The gunboat is how you brought that peace.

Ffg would be throwing money away by not making the gunboat when they know there's a demand.

FFG Gunboat pls

I like TIEs but I grow tired of the same design of the tie. TIE/ln, TIE/i, TIE/b, TIE/ph, TIE/d, TIE/x1, TIE/v1, and TIE/it (punisher) are all awesome and I love them, but with the addition of more TIE fighters like the TIE/fo, TIE/sf, and whatever new TIEs to come in the future; it would be refreshing to have a fighter from Cygnus Space Works like the XG-1 Star Wing then have more Sinar Systems' eyeballs.

Long as I keep getting Sienar Systems' eyeballs as well, then I don't mind them throwing a few Cygnus bones.

Oh indeed the Sinar's trademark eyeballs are essential, but more variety in ships would be nice. I'd like to see more of Cygnus' vessels like the XG-1 and even the larger landing ship (often seen in Rebels) would be a nice addition.

I'm assuming you're referring to the Sentinel landing craft.

Yes! That's the vessel. I had completely forgotten its name.

I'd have said it stresses the bounds of the Large ship size considering it's nearly twice as long as the Lambda, but it's actually not as long as the Ghost. So I guess it's fine.

I always find it weird that Rebels uses it MORE than the Lambda. Even when it's only to carry one person around.

It's possible that the reason Rebels uses the Sentinel more than the Lambda might be because the Lambda isn't in mass production yet? Kind of like how the AT-ATs in Rebels aren't the same type of AT-ATs we see in the movie, and the two legged walkers aren't AT-STs. Keep in mind, there's still 4-5 years before ANH, and about 8 years before ESB. Plenty of time for the Lambda to go into mass production and for AT-ATs to be redesigned.

Also if you are deploying a lare number of troops the Sentinel landing craft would be the optimum small vessel to have on board ship.

I don't know if this has been suggested but why doesn't FFG just do a title similar to the tie-bomber. They turned a bomber into a shuttle bomber with the new title coming out in Imperial Veterans...why not make a title that turns the shuttle into the gunboat and the title adds stats to the shuttles existing stats?
