XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

I've been really enjoying myself playing Fighter Squadron in Battlefront but it just isn't the same as a full simulation.

Edit: I would give ANYTHING for them to include all the X-Wing vs TIE Fighter ships as DLC down the line in there

I would give $60 for the game if it had included any decent measure of content to begin with. :P

As it stands it may be worth $40 but I have a hard time justifying even that. (No judgment to those who got the game and love it of course, just my opinion)

It's a valid opinion.

Oh sure. I wasn't expecting much more content than it's got but I respect those who think there's too little for present. I'm waiting to hear about what's forthcoming for it! But in the meanwhile it's definitely the best-looking way to vape some bucketheads

Still haven't got a next-gen console, so Battlefront's not on the agenda here.

I need to see about optimising X-Wing Alliance on my PC, I finished the first Azzameen missions, but now with the Alliance the game's started to become unplayable...

I've really wanted to play the original X-Wing, TIE Fighter, etc. games but haven't taken the time into acquiring them. I may do that sooner rather than later.

With the update, running it on an intel I7 with 16 gigs is nice.

Still pissed that my Pc is out of action.

So pissed.

My space engineers addiction is crippling me.

As Maury Finkle, founder of Finkle Fixtures (biggest lighting fixture chain in the southland), would say...

"Do it. Do it. Seriously, c'mon, do it. Do it."

I've added links to the potential XG-1 pilot's wookieepedia descriptions to page 1.

My PC should be able to run XWA comfortably and it was OK to start with, but since I've started the Alliance tour of duty the frame rate has started stuttering a lot.

Trying to shoot TIE's with a stuttering frame rate is not fun.

I recently just started playing the game. I'm a little disappointed that the XG-1 Star Wing wasn't included as one of the released ships, yet surprised to see the TIE Defender and TIE Phantom.

Hi FFG, could you please include the XG-1 Star Wing into the game? Thank you.

...and while we're at it can you pull a Lego-UCS-like-stunt and make an Telgorn XQ5 Platform in X-Wing scale EVEN IF IT COSTS 500$!!!

A cardboard cutout composite or background on a map grid would do...

Late to the game here, We can get X-wing verus Tie Fighter running on a windows 10 PC?

Would really love that, old graphics an all?

It runs fine on my x64 Win7 machine, and (I'm pretty sure?) Win10 has the same compatibility modes.

Proper support on GOG or Steam would be your best bet; their store pages should indicate if it works for your machine or not.

You should be able to - all of the X-Wing games are now available through both Steam and GOG.com. I'd check the game forums to make sure about compatibility, but from what I gather they should run fine on Windows 10 (I'm having a few frame rate issues with X-Wing Alliance, but then I'm still using Vista lol)

Don't get old games on Steam. GOG does them better. Also, GOG gives you all three versions of X-Wing and TIE Fighter while Steam only gives you two.

Most importantly GoG comes with the 95 collectors CD version of tie fighter, so you get the slightly improved graphics and the original synthesised soundtrack and not just the rip of the the movie soundtrack. I got X wing alliance through Steam however and it works great, and with Game Ranger it's possible to play multiplayer, which is something I never could do back in the day.

Oh for a fully-modernised HD version of the X-Wing series.

The XWA Update guys have done a fantastic job, but I can't help but think what could be done on current gen technology.

I think the thing I'd want even more than that is a pass through the games 'updating' them to include the new canon stuff since their original release. IE., the Empire doesn't run CR-90s, but instead Imperial Raiders as their 'corvette'. Nor do they use Nebulon-B frigates, and instead favor the Arquitens-class cruisers for that role. I doubt we'll ever see a 'Dreadnought' that looks like the ones so far used in the games, so maybe pull in the Clone Wars-era Venator or Acclamator-class cruisers. etc.

I digress, the XG-1 Star Wing should be created. I think it would help with balance against all the turret action we've been getting. Empire needs a little love in that area against the "Doughnut of Death" and "Fat Han".

Edit: An idea would be to give the XG-1 Star Wing a title card called "Assault Gunboat" allowing the player to use missile cards twice before discarding them. This does not mean attack twice in a single turn.

Controversial suggestion that xanderf!

I for one loved the background from the original films, the books and games - that a large percentage of Rebel equipment was either captured from the Empire or brought over by defectors. They were never a fully subsidised and funded group, always guerillas.

Sure, but what nuCanon is pretty clearly indicating (from the prequels through the Clone Wars series, Rebels, and the new movie, as well as all official tie-in material) is that there never has been much of a 'unification' of fleets. What the old EU had was a world with relatively few ship-building organizations, and so ships would be mostly bought or used by the largest powers and stolen for use by Rebels or criminals. Which worked very well with video game storage limitations of the time (less 3d models = yey!! when trying to fit things on floppy disks), after all.

But it never really made sense...and especially doesn't now...as literally everything we've seen since then has pointed to practically every significant star system having its own fleet, and the design unity of the Imperial Fleet really the anomaly rather than the norm. Naboo had its own ships, Alderaan had its own ships, heck, the planets too small to field their own fleets instead combined into 'guilds' to build a fleet with (which gives us the Trade Federation Ships, etc).

Even I have to admit that I'm losing grasp of the thought that the Empire had Neb-Bs. But, the Alliance using stolen Imp tech and old republic stuff makes SO MUCH SENSE.

Indeed. Hell, even the X-Wing's were (EU) historically stolen from the Empire.

Interesting discussion going on about the fleet resources in Off Topic at the moment xanderf; seems like the First Order are perfectly willing to use Nebulon-class ships!

So I recently read the book "Before The Awakening" which deals with the backstory of TFA's new leads Rey, Finn and Poe, with the latter being the most interesting one as it's chalk full of additional info about The Republic, Resistance and The First Order...

...Bonus info - The First Order in the book still uses ISDs alongside the newer Resurgent class SDs as well as Nebulon-K Frigates and other assortment of smaller support ships. I wonder how the new frigates defer from the older Nebulon-Bs. Please feel free to discuss:)

The latest rebels episode demonstrates the 'theft' of ships by the Alliance. Basically sympathetic worlds like Alderaan allow their ships to be stolen to create plausible deniability. Even at this early point the Imperials have noticed that Alderaan looses alot of ships to the rebels.

So basically the Nebulon-B would fit MUCH better in this kind of scenario instead of being an imperial front line warship that just happens to be stolen in bulk. Or are we supposed to believe frigate crews are far more susceptible to mutiny than other ship crews?

GUNBOAT!

Actually that should be correct. In the original lore, the Rebel Alliance stole most of its fleet from the imperial fleets and imperial manufacturers.

YES! GUNBOAT! FFG, PLEASE, GUNBOAT.

I COMPLETELY agree with this.

Of course, while they were at it, I'd want them to replace the Gunboat and Missile Boat with the TIEs that now exist that fill those roles as well. TIE Hunter for the Gunboat(shields, hyperdrive, ordnance, ion cannons, hyperdrive) and TIE Punisher for the Missile Boat(shields, hyperdrive, 4 ordnance launchers, powerful engines).

The Gunboat would still be in the game, it just wouldn't be one of the ships the player flies.

Also, the Empire DID use the Acclamator as well. So that would be perfectly fitting.
