XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

You make it a support ship that you pay for and fly around like you would any other ship. That is a thing I would like to see is support craft that are completely factionless(or at least, the generic pilots are factionless). Like the BFF-1 bulk freighter.

Ah yes, the good ol BFF-1 "Best Friend Forever" Freighter.

I remember the day I first played the original X-Wing, on Ashley's old Windows 3.1 PC no less.

The very first flight - very first mission, I think - I saw a BFF-1, immediately tried to do a fly by between the cargo containers, crashed and burned. Good times.

I also remember encountering the XG-1 for the very first time, and absolutely bricking it. A "capture the Lambda Shuttle" mission which ended up forever giving the Y-Wing the nickname "Y-Shaped Coffin". Destroy the Intrepid.

...and of course, the infamous X-Wing trench run.

So...... Question...

Would an assault gunboat have a shield regen capability?

Been playing tie fighter a lot lately (Good Old Games $9.99 special) and there is a lot of gunboat action there, and shield recharge actually comes in the game if you fail mission and ask flight officer for advice.

Every ship in that game that has shields can regen them. It's just that the Gunboat is the first ship you fly that actually has shields.

Yeah but some of the mission strategies actually tell you to hang back and charge up your shields while something else is happening (like assault transports torpedoing cruiser)..... So i was wondering if this could be a mechanic for the imps not just rebels. ...

Assault transport would be a blast for epic games......

Since so many of you grognardfs are veterans of the old tie fighter sim

what flightstick would you suggest?

Re: regen on GUNBOAT

I think FFG is gonna keep regen as a unique ability for pilots and certain upgrades, I doubt any ship will have regen across the board.

The cheaper the better, but that's just the nostalgia talking. Grew up playing on a three-button joystick, and two of the buttons did the same dang thing!
That said you can find solid sticks on Amazon etc for about $30 if you aren't willing to break the bank. I use the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and it works just fine on the GOG versions. One day I'd like to save up for something from Saitek but I'm waiting for a new SW sim first.

The one I used 20 years ago.

Lol, this.

I haven't used a flightstick since the 360 Controller became a thing that worked on PCs.

The best times growing up..

I second the Logitech. I think it's the best cheap option around (below $40). Before the Logitech I had an older relatively cheap Saitek that was okay, but I don't think I'll go back to that brand. The other two big brands I hear a lot about are Thrustmaster and CH. I've not used either, but the CH lacked a twist handle (which I like to use for rolling) so that ruled that brand out for me.

I can't stand my Extreme 3D Pro. Has a horrible asymmetrical roll issue that can't be solved with calibration, no matter what I do.

Going to get a Saitek X52 pretty soon though.

The Gunboat is the exact same as an X-wing, except it has more ordnance slots, fewer green maneuvers, and not Astromech.

Everything bad with the X-wing will be even worse on the Gunboat!

Cannon? System? More hull and shields? Speed 1 turns? All speed 1 maneuvers? Doesn't sound like an x-wing to me. But then I'm no mathwing wiz, so someone will have to crunch the numbers to see what costs make it effecient. I would think GUNBOAT needs to be around 18-22 pts, probably on the lower end of that.

The cannons are as strong as an X-wing's. It has the same hull and shields as an X-wing.

The Gunboat was just a reskinned X-wing for the Imperial side in the old PC games, more or less, that's why it is the exact same as an X-wing. Maybe it was fleshed out in some other stories, but it is just an uninspired design. Looks more like a Scum ship than an Imperial one.

And yet, it remains a popular and loved ship.

I do not think you know what Reskin actually means.

Um, do you mean Y-wing? Cause that would make more sense. As it is this just doesn't make sense. And the GUNBOAT looking like a scum ship, yeah that's not accurate at all unless the Lambda/Sentinel/ect are scum now.

Once again I feel the power of the Talon roll in this thread.

I need to agree. Recently we bought a Thrustmaster joystick for my son to play X-Wing vs TIE Fighter with me in coop, while I used my old USB Logiteck dual analog game pad...

I will just say that after one hour or so, we were fighting for the gamepad. It is just so much easier to aim with the little thumbsticks than with the big, full fist, joystick. Also, it feels much easier to map and use the 1/3 Throttle and 2/3 throttle and Full Throttle functions to three shoulder buttons, than to use the Throttle axis in the joystick.

My advice is to get a nice gamepad with thumbsticks and many buttons to map to the speed, nearest threat, change weapon, shoot, roll, and shield angle functions.

Well, I still sit right at my computer, even with the control pad. So I use the keyboard still for most of that ****, just like I did when I used the flight stick back in the day.

You need the keyboard anyway for all other less often used controls, like reinforcements, power transfers, wingman orders, damage control, the message log, etc. The X-Wing series in a game firmly rooted in its PC origins. We won't see a remake anytime soon, as it will not lend itself to easy port to consoles or sofa-and-gamepad stlye PC gaming.

...apparently the X-Wing has Ion Cannons now.

On the subject of flight sticks for X-Wing, I agree with the 20 years ago comment.

Many flight sticks died during our first playthroughs of the game.

I use an extreme 3D pro also, but I will say i've been eyeing a few thrustmasters. Best stick I ever had was a thrustmaster.

Oh for a fully-modernised HD version of the X-Wing series.

The XWA Update guys have done a fantastic job, but I can't help but think what could be done on current gen technology.

We can but hope...

Meantime, as I have an ASUS M32CD and installed the update, I won't be gaming for a week or two....

I've been really enjoying myself playing Fighter Squadron in Battlefront but it just isn't the same as a full simulation.

Edit: I would give ANYTHING for them to include all the X-Wing vs TIE Fighter ships as DLC down the line in there
