XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

I actually had a "Gorgon" pilot idea for the missileboat:

Chimaera is already a Star Destroyer, arguably THE Star Destroyer.

Does anyone have still pictures of the X-wing PC game cut scene that showed Gunboats assisting as air support during a planetary invasion?

Dig those awesome 90's graphics!

The most important one there is, baby.

Um, the Imperator? You know, the original class-naming ship before the name of the class became Imperial.

Of course the Avenger is probably the most well known since it was actually named in a movie. And the Devastator still has the best name. But Chimera is good, it was good enough for the Grand Admiral.

Too bad on the named pilots, we'll have to find some new ones.

Rho group pilot? (I know, gunboat guys want it, but I'm convinced we should settle for Nu, leave Mu for the missileboat, and take some weapon name for the other generic. Also, I'm saving Eta for the Avenger, I think I remember some z-ETA avengers)

Then some cool callsigns, lets see...

"Janus"

"Chimera"?

"Sarlac"?

Any Star wars two headed monsters?

There is no need to invent new names. Here are the pilots we need:

Raslan Muskov is a fan character, no?

Also, Eagle/Talon aren't squadrons from TIE Fighter, so automatically inferior to the Greek alphabet soup choices.

Talon Squadron was from XvT and is totally acceptable by being badass. Especially as Avenger is in from the same campaign.

Um, the Imperator? You know, the original class-naming ship before the name of the class became Imperial.

Who cares? That doesn't make the ship important.

The first ship could have been called the Dog's Leg. And then they'd all be called Dog's Leg-class star destroyers.

Dog's Leg class Star Destroyers are canon, you heard it here.

Hey those graphics would be right at home in a phone game these days. I never played those game for the graphics, but they were pretty good at the time considering. Thanks for the screen shot!

Rho, Tau, Mu, Nu.... assign to Gunboats/Missile Boats as appropriate.

Talon sounds cool, but which squadron was it who were the ones who arrived via request for reinforcements in TIE Fighter? They clearly get the high PS generic card...

I'm pretty much in the same (Gun)boat.

In fact, having overdosed on plastic crack following the release of Wave 7 (seriously, last night I was like Al Pacino at the end of Scarface, just with X-Wing tokens and upgrade cards instead of mounds of white powder), I'm seriously contemplating holding off from future purchases until we see FFG bite the bullet and finally give us our Cygnus Spaceworks playthings.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA no you won't. Just like the rest of us, your best intentions will last until about the second or third Wave N+1 preview article--and that's when you'll snap and lunge toward the nearest website where you can preorder.

Actually, the only models I've ever preordered were the Rebel Transport and Tantive IV, got let down by the shop, cancelled the preorder and bought elsewhere once they was in stock.

I've done my shopping for Wave 7 - Hound's Tooth, 3 Kihraxz, and a K-Wing purely for the upgrades (the model & pilot cards will be on ebay later this weekend) - no interest whatsoever in the Punterdictor.

Wave 8 - one Mist Hunter and one Jumpmaster, yes, I'll be picking them up. But I have no interest in either of the Rebels ships at all.

As for the Force Awakens stuff - I see very little of interest in what's been revealed so far there, either. Maybe because (like the Rebels stuff) I have no emotional attachment to the characters or ships (yet). I have X-Wings, I have TIEs, I don't need X-Wing+ or TIE+.

In fact, the only reason I've withheld from purchasing a number of Shapeways Gunboats so far is that I remain convinced that FFG will release them at some point. If at any point that conviction wavers, Shapeways it is.

That is how I feel about it. My friend bought two Jumpmaster 5000 through shapeways and the week after they arrived wave 8 article lol.

Yeah, I've picked up a couple of models from Shapeways myself, but only ones that I really doubt FFG will ever release, like Mel's Planetary Defenders and a couple of Gosric's Z95 variants. Mostly out of curiosity and nostalgia, really.

Huh. I've just realised I haven't actually bought any Imperial ships since Wave 4,either.

Another of my friends has that planetary fighter and it looks so much better in person. It is a really awesome model, if only they released it in a two pack blister for S&V with stats like 2/2/1/1 focus/barrel roll at a cost of 7 points. Run a weak swarm with a fat YV-666

Still no reason to hold back on the Assault Gunboat. We need that!

As far as Shapeways goes with the A-9, the I-7 and the Miy'til I now have TIE Fighter and the first "Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels" completed in terms of models with thr exception of the Escort Shuttle.

Yeah that book was chock full of errors but it was the best pre-wiki reference for a long time. You still need a hornet interceptor! Wait, did shape ways make one yet? Not that I would ever get one...what were they thinking? KJA strikes again.

Talon and Nu it is!

But, uh, who are the other two guys in those custom cards?

Oh I forgot, the 'essential' guide to vehicles and vessels still omitted the Gunboat. Also everything else from TIE Fighter save the Defender. I think the Avenger for a mention in the X-1 entry though. That book would have been twice as big of it included all the material that it should have, and instead cut out all the crap like the Hornet and Sssri-what ever aliens.

Nope. Gosric made a more "acceptable" variant of that IRD figher: https://www.shapeways.com/product/EW8HVGHCF/ird-mk4-wing-1-270?li=search-results-1&optionId=19869440

Ssi-ruu (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Ssi-ruu) only thing good about "The Truce at Bakura" was....nothing. It s*cked.

I'd like to point out that despite linking here from another thread pointing out why ship threads are cool, I am by no means losing hope. I am certain we'll get the official FFG gunboat some day.

Yes please for the Gunboat!!!

I am awaiting for the Assault Gunboat preview article. I bet soon after, Frank will post in the forums that the article is wrong and that they aren't releasing any Assault Gunboat, but the Naboo N1 fighter, instead.

Or an article showingboth on April 1st.

Possibly including a new damage deck, which is new and improved, needed for tournaments and retails at $30

Alternatively an April 1st update, mentioning that ships will no longer come pre-painted, and in order to be tournament legal will have to be painted with at least 4 visible layers...
