The idea being you can use Karsabis' ability as a stand in for the OS-1 Title while maintaining the flexibility of a Deadeye Rho. Including the Cannon just is insurance against someone trying to speed or boost their way into range one to avoid being harpooned. The Mangler (or cannon of choice) makes his range one threat slightly scarier and gives him something to fire when he's reloading so opponents won't feel safe landing in front of him even if his missile is down.

Just a heads up, but Karsabi's ability doesn't work with Advanced Slam. You get stressed before AdSlam would trigger, and you can't perform free actions while stressed.

It depends what order the actions are taken in, right?

obviously slamming and reloading and trying to remove both disabled tokens would not work

Nope. Karsabi triggers when you receive a token, not after, so if you want to resolve his ability you have to do it before you have the opportunity to use advanced slam. This leaves you stressed when the trigger for advanced slam comes up, preventing its use.

You can slam, just not adv slam. Missiles are fine, but Wired linked HLC Karsabi gives you a lot more mobility.

That’s actually how I build him. Probably explains the confusion

I wanted to fly one of the named pilots, and Harpoons always blow up in my face so I switched to Homers.

What's your build with them? Linked Battery/HLC? I'm guessing it will be an XG-1 as ordnance builds really need the action economy.

I've been practising Rhos with PtL, Harpoons and Guiadance Chips. Hitty and tanky, but having the ability to quickly switch facing with Lightning Reflexes would have come in really handy at times.

Rho Squadron Veteran (32) - Alpha-class Star Wing
Lightning Reflexes (1), XG-1 Assault Configuration (1), Long-Range Scanners (0), Heavy Laser Cannon (7), Linked Battery (2)

I have to identical Rhos and Inquisitor with prockets.

Lightining Reflexes are really good setting up kill boxes enabling two consecutive shots with hlc. It also helps keeping GUNBOATS in fight and adds versatility cause I can turn around after slam or bump.

Linked battery is must have for reliable modifier :)

Finally think I've found a Gunboat list I enjoy. I've tried a few variations, but rarely do I have success with ordnance, and I generally prefer TIE/Ds for dogfighting. But, at the Omaha Regionals, I got curb stomped by a QD/Rho/Rho build that had me thinking, and I decided to take my own spin on it.

Vessery's Gunboats:

Col Vessery, Expertise, Ion Cannon, TIE/D, TIE Mk. II

2x Nu Squadron Pilot, Xg-1 Assault Config, Long-Range Scanners, HLC, Linked battery

The Gunboats are primarily there to trigger Vessery's ability, and allow him to maximize damage output and ion control. As he's the obvious threat, the enemy player may choose to focus on him, but if they do so, they leave themselves vulnerable to 2xHLC attacks with the potential for a lot of rerolls. Worked out in a casual game tonight. My HLC die rolls and rerolls weren't overly helpful, but kept my opponent busy enough allow Vessery to do what he does best. Ended up taking out my opponent's squad at the loss of one gunboat right at the end.

I like it! I've been practicising a Vessery / Gunboat list, but I've gone in a completely different direction with it:

Colonel Vessery - Expertise, TIE/x7, Stealth Device
Rho Squadron Pilot - Push the Limit, OS-1 Arsenal Loadout, Harpoon Missiles, Guidance Chips x 2

Vessery invariably ends up with a big bullseye painted on him, but being able to hide behind 4 dice, focus and evade gives him a bit of staying power. I didn't expect Gunboats to lend themselves to Push the Limit as well as they do.

I love these Defender/GUNBOAT lists, so iconic! Keep em flying boys!

That's a good plan for survivability. I'm just so enamored with the TIE/D title because I like shooting a lot. I do wish I had the x/7's -2 cost though!

The big D is expensive but it’s a lot of bang for the cost. Well worth it but I’m also a big fan of Marksman/Expertise BTL TLT Horton.

What's the 'best' build for Karsabi?

I'm currently thinking of:

Wired, HLC, Linked Battery & Title.

Paired with RAC. I have a 2pt bid, which could be spent on Karsabi.
