Lando said the Falcon was the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy, which is probably correct, as most pieces of garbage just tend to float there.

He also said it saved him on several occasions, so I guess that’s probably the snuggling compartments and false IDs.

What I don't understand is why he was wrong here: it was the first star wars movie ever, they could easily have said that hyperspace contracts realspace, so in that case travelling a shorter distance would be an indicator of how fast your ship is.

They did do a hamfisted retcon. It was stupid. My "retcon" is that Han is a liar and a cheat and was trying to sound impressive, and failed.

In the Falcon's defense, it DID outrun the explosion of the Death Star II. That's something even a TIE Interceptor couldn't do. And the Falcon is also a good chunk of engine.

I'm guessing that it has a lot of capability in each of its systems but not enough power to reach the full capability of any of them. Have an ISD at close range? All power from weapons to shields and just enough power to keep ahead of it. Being assailed by fighters? Split power between shields and weaponry and just keep in a straight line to give the gunners a chance to fire (unless of course you have a stormtrooper janitor manning the turret at which point by all means weave away). Need to escape a big boom? Throw all the coal into the fire and get out of dodge.

I usually had weapons on max and shields into engines myself. I'd shunt lasers into shields as I was able. Facing 6 TIEs was no issue when you had low shields. Getting a lucky broadside from a Nebulon had you shocking your lips kissing your shield capacitors as soon as you landed.

I always assumed it meant that the safe route to Kessel and back is super long to avoid asteroid fields and such but he took super risky short cuts and made the distance insanely short.
