XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

Ah, that would make sense.

So without another modifying special ability, hitting a ship with a jamming beam just gets rid of a focus, evade, or one of their target locks? It doesn't actually prevent them from doing anything?

Well the token also stays put on the ship until they TRY any of those actions. So if you land it on a tokenless ship...guess what they aren't doing next turn. Or they could...but to no effect. So it sort of delivers a catch-22 choice along the way that crack shot does. On its own, its ability is useful if not amazing, but it forces the enemy to make decisions they otherwise wouldn't make. IE., do I take that evade action to no effect just to burn the token off, or do I do a barrel roll or boost or something else instead so that I'm actually getting a useful action? But, then, that jam token stays there so I've got the same decision next turn....

I have the bad feeling that OS-1 condenses the Gunboat and the Missile Boat into one ship.

That is clearly already the case, even without the other title. Between having missiles and torpedoes, reloads, SLAM, etc.

I noticed that the XG-1 title doesn't sacrifice anything for gaining two cannon slots, so the OS-1 has to be something you'd be willing to give up two cannon slots for.

Here's my Take on Linked Battery.

Linked Battery: Small ship only: When you attack with a primary or [cannon] secondary weapon you may perform a reload.

Just guessing: You may ignore Weapon Disabled tokens.
Gives a better emphasis on SLAMing (like the MB)
And allows you to spam missiles (like the MB).

Whenever you acquire a Target Lock, you may perform a free reload action. Do not assisn a Weapons Disabled token.

And the Assault Configuration title isn't as bad as I thought.

You get TWO cannon slots(so you can have a beam, AND ion cannons), and the "2 points or less" thing only applies to the special ability(ability to shoot even when Weapons Disabled), so you CAN still put the canonical Ion Canons on it.

swx69-reload-action-and-jam-tokens.png

So if you HAVE a cheap cannon, you can fire it even when you're reloading.

swx69_spread_legal.png

So here's a thing. Doesn't a rule with "cannot" override everything, where there's a conflict? Because as I'm reading those cards, the assault title's cheap cannon shot can't happen because of the "cannot" on the reload action descriptions but about the weapon disabled token.

im sure the intention is for it to work but as written, it's against the existing rules of precedence.

Nope. Mission rule > faq > upgrade/pilot > rules and ref cards

Fair enough.

Things I want to know.

The Jam Token card doesn't explain what the JAMMED status means.

What is that other title "OS-1..."

That other cannon? "Linked Battery"?

Linked Battery. It looks like some shenanigans of primary weapons and cannon.

Who is their proofreader?
"Then that ship chooses and removes of its 1 focus, evade, or blue target lock tokens"

Despite that, it looks like an interesting way to preemptively give problems to people.

I love the Gunboat more now after that. Can't wait for the preview article to read more.

Definitely a five Gunboat fleet in my future.

:D

The year was 2017. X-wing had degenerated into Scum wing, battles between Dengar clones in JM5000's plagued the galaxy, the once mighty Imperial War Machine was in tatters, the famous X-wings of the Rebel Alliance stowed in Hangars.

The citizens of the galaxy needed a hero.

Fwooooooooooooooooooooooooooosh.

THE AGE OF GUNBOAT HAS ARRIVED.

Ace pilot, Oprah Vyndry flies ahead of Rho squadron, shouting in the comms "YOU GET A MISSILE TO THE FACE, AND YOU GET A MISSILE TO THE FACE, AND EVERYONE GETS A MISSILE TO THE FACE" as the Gunboats rapidly fire and reload their literal infinite amount of warheads.

In the distance, Scum Kimogila Gunships, already awaiting their inevitable Krayt ace upgrade card fly in loose formation, guns ready to bullseye any that cross their path.

A Lone Phantom II putters by, largely ignored.

The Gunboat seems like it's gonna play really awesomely. Because you get rid of ALL the Weapons Disabled tokens at the end of a turn, with Advanced SLAMs you can perform your maneuver and then SLAM to get into a good position, perform a free action (target lock, focus, or reload), fire upon an enemy with a cannon worth 2 or fewer points, and then get rid of all of your Weapons Disabled tokens. Does that seem like good action economy to anyone else?

Nono, it is it's just...not quite what the Jamming Beam used to do in Star Wars: TIE Fighter. Where it basically disabled your weapons.

Though I suppose it WOULD prevent you from firing anything that required a target lock.

It could also prevent people from using Unguided Rockets by denying them their Focus Token.

I wouldn't mind of these "Gunboats MKII" being canonized with SLAM.

In the next season of Rebels:

- Grand Admiral Thrawn, we just received a flight of updated XG-1s.

- Are they equipped with SLAMs as requested?

- Yes, sir! I made sure of that.

- Excellent.

Or in Han Solo movie:

- WUUAHAHHHAAAAAAAAAA!

- Imperial Customs? Don't worry Chewie, this is the fastest ship in the Galaxy.

- WUAHAHHAAA WUUAHAHAAAAAA!

- Gunboats? Man the turret, Chewie. We'll need to fight our way out of this.

I'm rather sleep deprived right now due to pulling an all nighter then staying up for the eclipse. For some reason when I read your sound effects for Chewie the Predator's self-destruct laugh came to mind. I don't know if Han could get to the escape pods and put enough distance between him and the Falcon if that were the case though.

Have to wonder, since the word jammed is in bold, maybe getting the jam token results in the same consequences as having the Huge ship Jam action taken against you? Losing a token is tough. Adding a bunch of stress? YIKES!

Also, I've decided that my Gunboats are going to have racing stripes. The models look amazing but it just isn't the same without the red. Not like the Empire is totally lacking in red paint on their fighters anyway.

Gunboats with blood stripes? Nice!

Just notices the pricing on the preview page - the Kimoglia is priced at medium (ARC/K-Wing) level, the Gunboat at standard (X-Wing/Protectorate) level.

I wish we had some good comparison shots alongside other ships...

On the contrary, I'm not sure that there will be enough action economy to make this a real contender for a meta that favors damage. You can only fire a Tractor Beam, Flechette Cannon, and (presumably) a Jamming Beam when you have a Weapons Disabled Token from the SLAM/Reload. That means that roughly every-other-turn, you get to do the damage that hastens the removal of opposing ships from the board (by firing the missile or torp that throws 3 or 4 dice, then regenerating the weapon). The play style will look a lot like a K-Wing without Bombs or Turrets. Or better yet, it'll look like a slightly cheaper Corran Horn.

Let's look at it this way: consider that the SLAM is basically a better Barrel Roll/Boost. It's a maneuvering action. We've seen the same formula before, but I'm going to use a TIE Interceptor to show the form:

PS 4 Rho Squadron Pilot + Adv SLAM + Tractor Beam (24-27 pts?)

  • SLAM action to get into great position
  • Adv SLAM free action for a focus
  • Fire Tractor Beam (3 dice but 0 damage)

PS 4 Saber Squadron Pilot + PTL (24 pts)

  • Boost or Barrel Roll to get into good position
  • PTL into focus
  • Fire primary weapon (3-4 dice)

Granted there are trade-offs--the Rho will have better shields, but the Saber has a better dial and an extra evade. So the balance is there... I don't think one is better than the other, it really depends on what else is in your squadron and what else you're equipping to the ships.

Such as ordinance on the Gunboat. You're often spending any acquired Focuses/TLs simply to fire the ordinance, not able to retain anything for converting the ordinance's dice into hits (and if you are holding onto a TL over a few turns, you're not going to want to spend it on a 2 pt cannon). Granted, there have been fixes--we could have some Guidance Chips, or give a Gunboat some XX-23 Thread Tracers and keep them in formation (hard to do with SLAM).

No... I think the developers had something else in mind with the Gunboat. I don't think they want us to fly three Gunboats in a squadron. The highest PS in the group is a 7 and its special ability is defensive in nature--so these guys will get beaten out by Fenn Rau, Whisper, and Dengar every time. I think they want us to fly these with support ships. Colonel Jendon? Major Rhymer? Major Stridan? a Fleet Officer or Systems Officer? A Palpmobile and two Gunboats (please no)?

What kind of support do you all see flying with your Gunboats?

A Lambda Shuttle with two gunboats would be thematic, if nothing else. Cygnus FTW.

Edited by Knightcrawler

BTW, before anyone gets the wrong impression. I am going to buy eight. ^_^

Now if only someone would would tell FFG that the Avenger would be even better. People would buy whole squadrons of those ^_^

How about a sentinel instead? They could fix the missing rear arc on that one. Maybe even include new Lambda pilots who have the rear arc as well. ^_^

3 or 2 nu squadron blockers with no title, long range sennsors, and a Plasma torp

Major vinder with VI, advance slam, assault config, flechette cannon, Possibly another main gun.

Omg....

Major vynder

Advance slam

Missile title

Advance proton torpedo

Concussion missile

Nope. Now we get to wait for, discuss and dissect the announcement article, the preview article and the release article, discuss abilities, builds and tactics...

...let's face it. The Crates are never catching up. Not until the sun rises in the west and sets in the east. Not until the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves...

ROFL! Agreed!

FTS Gecko has a good point actually - we're almost ranking No. 1 for 'Assault Gunboat' on Google! We could probably turn this thread into a 1-Stop-shop/repository for our Glorious Saviour! Hehhe!

Ohh, hey guys! Have you seen FFG's Article:

Bring on the Alpha Strike

Of interest is the section that says:

"The Empire's first widely deployed starfighter to have shields and a hyperdrive, the Alpha-class Star Wing was limited in its maneuverability, but heavily armed for its size."

...how is this different to what they said about the TIE Defender?

Of even GREATER interest was this tasty snippet:

"The ship was often assigned to Imperial Navy specialist units that needed a starfighter they could outfit for multiple roles."

HOLY MOLY!

I speculated/wished that Inferno Squad would use the Gunboat as their Starfighter of Choice.

Do you think the Gunboat will make an appearance in Battlefront II??? It's TOUGH, has shields, can hyperspace, is an independent platform. All boxes checked!

SO awesome, imagine that. A Gunboat Squad flying out of an Imperial Raider!!! ^Mind spinnnnnnnn^ ^Fingers Crossed^!!!! :D:D:D

...random query that's been bugging the **** out of me - WHY do they design starfighters so that astromech droids sit exposed???? For comic relief? I'm sure it's not a laughing matter for pilots with exploded droids!

Probably so they can reach their little arm-thingy out to awkwardly poke at a busted stabiliser.
