XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

I blew up a lot of gunboats in the old X wing flight simulator, so it would be my pleasure to do my part to get in this game too. It should have been released instead of the hideous tie punisher.

Let's get to 250!

You're welcome.

Xg-1 Alpha-class "Starwing" Assault Gunboat is her full name, but we know her as GUNBOAT!!!!!!!

Why those last two suggestions? It never could do anything like that.

Yep, those are random.

Yep, it's very sad that one of the iconic ships from the old X-Wing PC games is absent from the tabletop miniatures game that took it's name from the old X-Wing PC Games.

I've said it before, but I remember the very first time the Gunboats showed up in the X-Wing campaign (after briefly appearing in the Tour of Duty 1 cutscene). It was a case of "Hey, what's that? Haven't seen that before... OH SHI!"

And of course, the sequel, TIE Fighter, elevated them to legendary status. The Imperial Arms Race story with thr treachery of Admiral Demetrius Zaarin remains one of the best video game stories ever explored in the EU to this date.

Yes, and with all of FFG's recent missteps and woopsies, I believe it would it go a looooooooooooooooong was in PR, and a grand boost to the fun and connection of the Star Wars part of the game to the actual Star Wars extended universe and people who love it, IF they actually released the Gunboat and made he a proud Imperial casual and perhaps even a competitive mat staple, as the Empire has no real good ordinance carrier to date and lags behind the other factions even though Star Wars lore and cannon would say the opposite should be true. I agree @FTS Gecko, this ship is way more woven into the Star Wars experience for a vast majority of guys who grew up with the franchise than so many recent additions to the game. It's so puzzling that they can't see what's right in front of them. But hey, Star Wars is built on hope!

This. I've always viewed this game as a tabletop version of the PC games. It's the main reason I picked this up in the first place.
My 2 favourite ships to fly by a country mile were the X-Wing and the Gunboat. The fact that one of those is only viable as a meatshield and the other isn't even in the game gives me all of the sads. :(

Hey @J43G3RM31ST3R, what in the world does J43G3RM31ST3R mean and how do you remember how to type it out? That's a complex one there.....it has to be quite deep I'm thinking.

Haha! Clever...I'm too Irish to get that right off, never again ?

It is also my drink of choice.

Back in the SW Galaxies days, in deep space when Shadow Squadron was about to engage in PVP I'd drink a shot i left near my desk and call "Death on Black wings!" In Ventrilo.

Good times.

I'm fairly new to the game, and have to admit the first ship I searched for to see if I could buy it was the Gunboat, and was quite disappointed when I couldn't find it.

I'm not exactly new, and I'm disappointed every new wave. But our savior shall return!

That was in XvT, right? Those missions about destroying a convoy or something made me want to rip off my ears...

"Report on primary target: they are under starfighter attack. Report on primary target: they are receiving torpedo hits. Report on primary target: their shields are down. Report on primary target: their hull is damaged. Report on primary target: their hull is heavily damaged. Report on primary target: they are aborting their mission. Report on primary target: they are about to be destroyed. Report on primary target: they've been destroyed."

That. Non-stop. Times the amount of ships in the convoy.

I think TIE Fighter was the peak of usability and taste, and from that point on it went downhill.

I never played XvT, but they had those clips in X-Wing: Alliance. Fortunately it was toned down slightly from what you've posted above.

I actually quite enjoyed it, especially combined with the wingman chatter. The reports did lead to a fair few "NONONONONONOAAAAARGH" moments though, especially during the defense of the Liberty. Goddamn TIE Experimentals.

The best bit of chatter I've seen was from the YouTube clip on page one of this topic, though:

"Command, what are your orders?"

"DIE IMPERIAL DOGS!"

"Roger that command."

If you didn't get yourself into Maarek Stele you never lived a proper life.

Oh wait, that sounded weird.

Yes that was from XvT :D It was the worst part of the game, but it sure sticks in your head. It was probably the first game where you could multiplayer X Wings, TIEs, and the Gunboat against a friend, so I've always thought of it as the direct ancestor of the X Wing miniatures game.

Tie fighter was X wing but with every aspect of the game improved.
XVT was with the graphics improved at the cost of everything else.
If they re-skinned and re-released the trillogy (Xwing, Tie Fighter, XWA) I would pay 100 bucks for the privledge to play a game I already bought for like six bux.

"mission critical craft under attack, mission critical craft shields down, mission critical craft hull condition critical, mission critical craft destroyed". FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Agreeing with all 3 of your sentences there. :)

I am mystified why Disney doesn't recreate the X-Wing games. I know Battlefront is the big AAA moneyspinner, but surely a modern update of the PC classics wouldn't be too difficult considering the amount of money it could generate. Capcom have done it successfully with the Resident Evil series, there's no reason why Disney couldn't as well.

Then there's Elite: Dangerous. I'd love to see that game with a Star Wars skin on it.

Have faith.

The X-wing series of "space sims" has a gameplay that is almost rocket science next to the Battlefront-kind of games that have a huge mass appeal. They are not going to throw millions to remake anything HD if they aren't going to get those millions back multiplied times 100.

Flight sims are niche, so I don't really see EA paying attention to that genre any time soon.
