XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

If only this ship had "TIE" in the name.

If only this ship had "TIE" in the name.

The TIE Engine Mk 2 did not say "Imperial small base only", it said "Tie only"

Interesting curiosity. But irrelevant.

Bring on Wave 9!

FFG has never released a small-base ship that wasn't some kind of TIE. As much as it saddens me to say this, after eight waves, it may be time for us to give up, guys. :(

But I want one :(

They are never going to give you gunboats/missileboats. :P They have made a very strong effort to keep all Empire small ships members of the TIE line to give the faction a consistent aesthetic and keep everything instantly recognizable as Imperial and they will not break it no matter how many of these threads its small clique of fanboys make. Personally I think the next logical small fighter after the Inquisitor is the TIE scout as it will fill the niche of a small support ship that the empire currently lacks. TIEs are iconic and instantly recognizable as Imperial no matter the variant so even those with no knowledge of the EU can look at any one of them and be like "Oh! That ship is on Vader's team!" They aren't going to give up that kind of branding for something most people with mistake for a Rebel ship and more over they will not bring anything to the table that the Empire doesn't already have.

Empire is starting to feel boring with yet another TIE. It definitely needs more variation to the looks of the ships. While Scum and Rebels have pretty interesting looking ships, all quite distinct and original, the things that usually catch my attention first from an Empire build are the Lambdas, the Firesprays and the Decimators. TIEs are cool. But when you overdo them, they lose some coolness.

Their uniformity is a huge part if the Imperial theme. Look at Stormtroopers.

Hey guy, don't be like that. Eventually, they'll run out of TIEs. You just have to wait another 3-4 years.

Nah. Trends have to end sometime. Wave 8 clearly wasn't the right time as it had a clear theme to it - the Rebels show.

If you're going to release ships from Rebels, you're going to do them all at the same time. Hence why we got the Ghost, the Inquisitor's TIE and the Gozanti all announced at the same time.

Dengar and Zuckuss complete the run down of bounty hunters from Empire Strikes Back as well.

So, with Rebels getting a good release and the bounty hunters taken care of, that really opens up the possibilities for future waves. Although chances are Wave IX might well heavily feature Episode VII...

ROLL ON WAVE 10!

Don't count on it, with the new movies coming I'm sure we will see a whole slew of new variants.

Their uniformity is a huge part if the Imperial theme. Look at Stormtroopers.

The grey uniform officers. White uniform admirals.

Then the black armored pilots. Cockroach-looking gunners.

In Episode V, the AT-ST and AT-AT drivers with their half helmets, the snowtroopers, and the variety of bounty hunters on the Executor.

Then in Episode VI the scout troopers, the imperial guards...

There is a lot of variation among the troops of the Empire. In fact, there is a lot of variation among the Empire's vehicles also.

They only had three canon TIEs. The rest are all different looking things like the Lambda, the ATAT and ATST, the probes, the star destroyers, the death stars.

I don't know when the tred with TIEs went out of hand, but seeing the fanatics they have now, probably they would have wanted to replace the ATAT and ATST with TIE Tanks, the Death Star with a huge TIE cockpit, and the star destroyers with things with TIE panels like the Imperial Raider.

It's getting overdone...

The Gunboat wasnt going to come in wave 7. Despite a missile boat being an amazing heavy bomber, the punisher had one thing going for it- the ability to bring a Tie Defender/Advanced fix.

The Gunboat wasnt going to be coming in wave 8, as it never appeared in Rebels. Instead we got an Imperial Awing and a transport.

If Episode 7 related stuff is "already on the water" and we can expect it as a special release before wave 8, then wave 9 will NOT be Sequal Ships. Which means the gunboat stands a chance.

None of this will matter because it can't compete with the TIE's brand recognition..

While I still desperately want them to start adding some prequel/clone wars ships to the game, I do admit if they added one more EU ship, my first choice would be the gunboat.

Technically four canon TIEs. The TIE Shuttle was used to transport officers between Star Destroyers in Empire Strikes Back, although it's essentially just a TIE Bomber with a passenger bay instead of a missile pod, but yeah.

No doubt if Princezilla had his wicked way we would have had the TIE Shuttle instead of the Lambda-class Shuttle, because "Teh Empire iz all TIEs, all teh tiemz".

Because it's impossible for there to be both a wave and a special release dedicated to Episode 7?

I agree it's unlikely, but you can't rule it out on that basis alone.

You mean the white armored stormtroopers from Episode IV.

The ground troopers all share the same aesthetic to their armor design, all large imperial ships are triangles, the AT-AT, the AT-ST, the AT-PT exc all have a common aesthetic. FFG is more likely to start creating their own TIE variants like they did for the Raider then they are to break the theme.

The Lamba is not a fighter, it shares much more design similarities with the triangleular capitol ships then with fighters. And every single empire star fighter seen in the movies is a TIE.

Maybe. But it's not going to be 2 per year. So they're still going to run out eventually.

Want. We'll also probably get.

Seeing how Disney is mostly just "refurbishing" existing ships - see TIE Fighter and Millennium Falcon - for Episode 7 and not making many new ships (that we know about anyway), I could totally see this in a movie as a successor to the Lambda shuttle.

Chances are we'll see it turn up at some point no matter what Episode VII gives us. It's not as though FFG have been hesistant to delve into the EU for ideas. The arrival of the JumpMaster 5000 and G1-A Starfighter is proof enough of that.

Yeah, but we've been saying that for how long now?

True, but if it shows up in an actual movie, then its chances for inclusion are higher plus its public recognition would also be higher.
