XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

Played X-wing Alliance last night and shot down some gunboats.

Then this morning my Lambda shuttle finally arrived. It really could use a couple of gunboat escorts in the display case...

Wait until you fly escort for Luke and Dash in a Y-wing. Gets mighty frustrating having to bail them out. Ohh, and make sure you install the XWA mod upgrading the graphics.

Yeah, it's been a few years since I last played XWA, but I remember.

I also grabbed the newest version of the XWAUP craft pack before starting it. Looks decent enough that way!

ATR Epic release with two GUNNY

The ATR is 45 meters, about the same size as the Ghost. So it wouldn't really need to be an Epic. I'd love to see it in the game though.

First non epic hardpoint?

That's the dullest, least inspiring or inspired ship design this side of Battlestar Galactica!

That's the dullest, least inspiring or inspired ship design this side of Battlestar Galactica!

It's also a complete beast, usually armed with proton rockets and turbolasers.

I would LOVE to see an ATR model!

Didn't someone scratch build an ATR? Macross, maybe?

I think the ATR was my favorite non-playable ship introduced by the X-Wing/TIE Fighter video games. Though largely because those beasts could take care of themselves so well, and thus keeping them alive long enough to complete a boarding action wasn't annoying.

Believe it or not I'd rather see an ATR in game over the Gunboat. With the shadowcasters alternate arc mechanics, you could more accurately capture the ATRs firing systems (which always seemed to be facing one direction if not forward: wherever you were).

A rule to prevent double crew would be nice as well to prevent it being used as a palp shuttle.

They were either a real help or a bloody nightmare, depending on which side of the battle they were on.

I'm playing X-Wing Alliance at the moment, and there's a training mission for the Rebel Alliance - Deep Space Strike, I think it is - where you have to first destroy a fuel station, then a Carrack-class cruiser at a repair yard, then take out 33% of a convoy, all while flying a Y-shaped coffin Y-Wing.

First two objectives? Fine - even when the Skipray and GUNBOAT reinforcements hyper in to intercept you.

The third? Absolute nightmare, and it's down to those **** ATRs and their multiple turbolasers. They're fast enough to hound you, powerful enough to cause serious damage while you go for the convoy, and tough enough to shrug off your own attacks.

On the other hand, the Rebels often use them as boarding craft in some of the missions, and, like you said, unless you let an entire wing of Bombers take a run at them unmolested, they can pretty much take care of themselves.

That's why I want them in Xwing. I want others to feel the terror the Video game players felt.

I suppose the Shadow caster goes some way to doing that, but an ATR statted correctly would be much more horrifying.

Edit: and it, like gunboats, would be a nice change from the Aces High Imperial format.

An ATR - statted correctly - would crush an X-Wing CR90! lol

3 ATK, 0agi, 6hp, 4 shields, yv666 dial, ARC-170 title, moving arc, 2 crew, 28 pts basic.

Edited by Xerandar

you better hope it is in the Rogue One movie or you and your ATR are SOL...

I'd say the stats would be a little bit higher than that...

From the Wookiee (which is based on X-Wing in-game stats iirc)

T-65 X-Wing
Shielding - rated 50 SBD
Hull rated - 20 RU
Lambda-class Shuttle
Shielding - rated 100 SBD
Hull - rated 66 RU
ATR-6
Shielding - rated 200 SBD
Hull - rated 142 RU (!)
So... if we went like-for-like, taking into account a little bit of variation between the T-65 and the Lambda, the ATR-6 would have approximately 8 shields and... 18-20 hull.

Don't forget the ATR-6 is over twice the length of a Lambda. And has four turbolaser turrets. :(

Could probably get away with reducing those stats quite a lot by making it a Huge ship, with access to the Epic ship modifications and actions (Reinforce, Recover..). In fact you'd probably have to. Mobile arc sounds promising on it, though.

Didn't the B-wing have 62 Hull in the X-wing video game - but in this game it has the same amount of hull as the X-Wing (and the TIE Fighter for that matter)?

A certain amount of "statline compression" may be in play.

Maybe the Ghost and the Decimator are good analogs - being in the same length bracket?

Yeah, the ATR is a little longer than the Ghost, but the Ghost is wider and taller.

Exactly. And the Ghost has only 10 Hit points (and the Decimator 12).

Military grade armor may justify using a high figure - but not necessarily super-high. 12-14 hull, instead of 20 - 6 shields instead of 8? Double the tabletop game's TIE Defender's shielding would be 6.

I remember the mission, and that I fell exactly like you excpet that the Y-Wing is the best match for the mission and the ATR.

But I am Y-Wing lover anyway.

In one mission you had to destroy I think the corvette and GUN reinforcments for a damaged ISD, while he spat out 2 T/I from 52 clicks at you. I loved that mission as it was the frist time I noticed the respawn is actually limited (to the carrier capacitiy?). After the convoy and the GUN were gone, I shot down every T/I that they sent out. Of course it helped that they only sent put 2 at a time.

Mission breakdown:

2 Cr90, 7 GUN and 56 T/I shot down.

Oh an before somebody demands more ATR remember that the release has to be:

GUN > T/A > TRN > ATR

Imperial Fighter Squadrons II Expansion Pack

Meanwhile, the Empire's response to the continued spread of rebellion is the development of wildly advanced new fighters and the tactics their squadrons permit.

The Imperial Fighter Squadrons II Expansion Pack introduces eight new squadrons, two each of four different types – the highly Strategic Lambda-class Shuttle, the punishing VT-49 Decimator and TIE Defender Squadron, and the elusive TIE Phantom Squadron. Each of these new types of squadrons comes, in turn, with two cards, one unique and one non-unique. FF

so sad we dont get GUNs and Avengers in Armada. :( YET.

Am I the only one who packed heavier ordnance? I recall them being annoying, but nothing you couldn't handle in a TIE Bomber, and anything with shields was even better off.

Might have been a bit different in TIE Fighter, but X-Wing Alliance they weren't to be trifled with. They had a habit of shooting down your missiles and torpedoes as well.

They were a major source of dead wingmen.

Torpedos were indeed the way to go against them. However you couldnt just spat them out a t 2.5 clicks as they were very capable of shooting down straight flying ordonance.

Desire to play tie fighter, INTENSIFYING!!!
