XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

On an unrelated note, yet related to my no mans sky comment.

It's been delayed. Just like my TIE Pilot suit (until Q3 now) RAEEEEEGE!!!!!!!

Also, Captain Centos was finecast. RAEEEEGE.

That's my 3 rages.

On the plus, a guy in my IT dept and I were talking re sony and SWG was mentioned.

Turned out we had previously met. Funny how these things happen.

There are some good SW mods for X³. One of them is still in developement. Lets hope the modders will add some missions.

And Freespace (which is more like an arcade game combatwise)

Already got XWA-upgrade installed, as well as XvTBOP and X/TIE95.

Because of course I do. But they are so dated. So so dated. Not just in the graphics dept either...

What makes the X-wing games dated? I mean, besides the graphics and sound. TIE Fighter had a very immersive experience that is sorely lacking in games of all generations, surely that idea isn't dated. (And by X-wing games I'm really talking about TIE Fighter, he bestest of the bestest)

Oh and hope your BRIANS kit comes in sooner rather than later.

OK, that X3 mod looks really good!

The problem is that it's X3...

First of all, you know by now that i've been playing these games for over 20 years. That's my disclaimer. I'm old.

We'll ignore graphics entirely for this. Because mods.

Netcode. XvT and XWA games are kinda hard to run sometimes. I actually had lag between two local machines.

General code: Compatibility with the 90s era Lucasarts games is a huge issue. I won't go much further, suffice to say i've really had to make compromises, if i had a 90s era PC it'd actually run it better and prettier for a lot of the games.

Controls: While I like the keyboard controls, they could well be simplified. an X-wing game on a modern control pad should be possible while keeping, maybe even improving the immersion over the 90s era.

Limitation on scripts/missions. XVT was great, but suffers the above netcode issue horribly, XWA doesn't really have co-op campaign. it can and should.

Local Focus: No FTL/hyperspace mechanic and X-wing alliance does it really weirdly behind the scenes.

I'll add smoothness, not in terms of FPS but the way the game flows now just... doesn't flow as nicely compared to some more recent games. It's hard to explain what I mean. Like, it feels like a 90's space game, not a 2000s or 2010s space game. No amount of graphical update can change the feeling under the hood. that's what I mean at it's core by feels dated.

X-wing as a series is a classic list of games. Like a classic car they are still beautiful, may be hotrodded etc. But won't outperform a modern vehicle.

It wants, no, not wants. Demands a modern sequel/re-imagining.

I can't See the problem :P

I have about 1000h in X³:Reunion and X³: Terran Conflict ^^

That's fair enough. My experiences with X as a series are this: This game is so beautiful. The soundtrack is amazing! Great, I can command fleets of ships! man combat is meh.

OMG Money is a grind

Elite Dangerous: OMG this is so beautiful, soundtrack is nice.

Combat is eh...

OMG money is a grind.

I'm not a trader. I'm a flying scalpel. Give me a target, an objective. I'll see it done. This is why I like X-wing etc so much, even freelancer. Not a fan of the huge grinds. Both X and Elite put too much emphasis for my own personal tastes on said grinds. You can't bounty hunt without a really sharp kitted out ship in elite, and even if you can, after a while there's not much to the game. This is all down to personal taste though, and I can see why X is a likable game. I've probably put a good couple hundred hours into the series as a whole, But... Yeah. It's not a favourite game.

I am looking forwards to Squadron 42 more than Star Citizen.

I will say I like exploration, and I like building, so I love space engineers and am really looking forwards to no mans sky.

I'm a fossil I guess. TIE Fighter is the one game of the series that absolutely must have a proper sequel, and the series does need a modern update, but I would miss the keyboard. Any new game MUST have a built in

Mission editor. And what's wrong with feeling like a 90s space game?

What's wrong is that I want more. We aren't in the 90s any more and we can do better.

I want that mission editor, but I would also like procedural or semi procedural campaigns.

I want escort missions to matter, I want boardings to have their own mechanics.

I want to be able to destroy capital ships, but I want the ships wreckage to remain afterwards.

This is why I have such a colossal hard on for Space engineers. Once it's scenarios are in and i can get some kind of AI going I not just want a battle, I want a 3 tiered battle I want capital ships, fighters AND boardings in a game, and afterwards you can explore all the pretty wrecks.

X-wing series did it well. It used scripting based on orders and objectives. I had it all memorized in the late 90s as I made missions. But it's so limited now. If Red 2 dies in mission 1-2 then it doesn't matter. in 1-3 he's back again, I want it to matter.

Don't get me wrong. I love the X-wing series, of course I do. I'm here aren't I? I'm even getting a BRIAN kit. That should tell you enough right there. I'm even playing through the original TOD again. But she's old, with the same missions and old AI. She needs love.

What I love most about X-wing is that while there is a backstory ultimately you didn't play Maarek Stele or Keyan Farlander unless you wanted to. I played myself, only in alliance were you forced to be a character.

I hope you can play as yourself again, hopefully with your own managed AI squadron. They will invariably have casualties, some MIA and fatalities, and these will be tragic. the 1/1000 chance of being able to rescue an MIA will be joyous, the 1/200 chance of them being turned while captured devastating.

Then, the possibility of deep asteroid field, nebula or dare I say it? Atmospheric combat.

What about the possibility of being shot down and having to secure escape from the planet you crash land on? What if it's a multiplayer game? What if you find yourself stranded and I take a small freighter and go down there looking for you?

A new X-wing game could give us this. It could give us more than this.

So yeah. I love the X-wing series, I really do. But that's what's wrong with a 90s series. It's limited to 90's possibilities.

I dunno, I love the classic MIDI.

Surely there must be some ambitious PC modders out there planning on re-skinning Elite: Dangerous with Star Wars textures?

You should probably know, Elite: Dangerous is always online and thus unmoddable.

The problem is that it's X3...

Uh.

Isn't Squadron 42 a Star Citizen module?

It is a Star citizen module, but you will be able to purchase it separate from Star Citizen.

Can you even dog fight yet or is it still just looking at ships in the hanger?

You can. And it's quite fun.

No idea. I've been following Star Citizen a lot less than a lot of people I know...

Got my Gunboats from we all know from where. I bought two, one of each from the leading designers.

I love the moving wings and finally have some incentive to use TIE Punisher and the alternative rules.

Smaller Gunboat is also great and I am thinking about using TIE Bomber rules for this when not using alternative rules developed in this thread and elsewhere.

Still a bit nervous about painting both models, even with all those years with Warhammer, especially basecoat which can ruin so much if not done properly. Well... they cannot stay semi-transparent forever, so time to do it.

On my way home from game night tonight I was pondering the gunboat a bit. I am super pumped for Imperial Veterans, but I know that once I am able to field my 4 TIE defenders in Epic play (totally a, I'll be looking to the horizon for the next thing, and that is the gunboat.

But while at game night a friend showed me the alternate art card for Force Lightning from Star Wars: The Card Game, and I felt a rush of nostalgia for The Force Unleashed. I realized that once I have the gunboat, the next ship I absolutely want to see in this game is the Rogue Shadow.

Sigh. No matter what they come out with it's never going to be enough. Does that mean I'm addicted?

Yes, it does.

But don't worry - you're not alone.

So until we do get it, what do people think is the closet ship to use as a gunboat? I fly my missile boat as a punisher and it's pretty close IMO. I'm thinking that exept for the lack of a cannon slot, the TIE Bomber for the closest ship in game to use as a Gunboat. Dial and upgrades work, and even the current pilots+veterans will work. Other option I see is the Advanced. Thoughts?

*I'll add the discalmer that I really like the bomber and dispite many people not likeing him, Maj Ryhmer is one of my favorite pilots. So using him as a gunboat really appeales to me. I just wish I could give them shields, but GC's win out usually*

Punisher is the Gunboat that should have been a Gunboat for my money. It would have fitted perfectly into its wave and indeed into the stats of the Punsiher itself with minimal alteration and Redline would have been a great pilot for it.

It's for that reason more than any other that I really doubt we see the Gunboat any time soon unless it miraculously makes it onto screen in a movie.

It's just too similar to the Punisher, in being a bigger, meaner Imperial ordnance carrier, from the perspective of game balance. Its strategic role as a perimeter patrol craft doesn't really make much difference in x-wing.

I feel the punisher is more the missile boat with out slam. If it had slam, it would be the missile boat in TIE form.

So until we do get it, what do people think is the closet ship to use as a gunboat?

Y-Wing. Swap the Turret slot for a Cannon slot, the Torpedo slots for Missile slots. Ditch the Astromech slot.

The Punisher is a heavy bomber, neither the Gunboat or Missile Boat carry bombs, but as far as the Imperials go it's probably the closest fit.

The BTL-A4 Y-Wong with Ion Cab on Turret is probably the closest overall analogue to the Assault Gumboat, with torps instead of missiles.

The Punisher is a heavy bomber, neither the Gunboat or Missile Boat carry bombs, but as far as the Imperials go it's probably the closest fit.

Ignore the bombs. Lots of ordance, system for FCS, boost for a proxy slam. "Redline" or generic feels pretty close for a missile boat to me. Not so much as the gunboat though. "Redline is pretty evil when built as a missile boat really. My curret build (using my missile boat model)

Redline

-EM

-APT

A little pricy at 40pts, but will cause alot of damage at any range.
