XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

Not sure we can draw any conclusions from the Phantom shuttle. OK, so it has folding wings, but is that intended to be a callback to the Lambda shuttle or is it simply a cool method of incorporating it's docking functionality with the Ghost?

You're right, of course- its just one datapoint, not a trend, and its converse frim the gunboats situation as well. It still makes me think the Mouse might try to take the ship we know as the gunboat in a different directtion.

And on reflection, the concept has potential. Marrak steel flying Rear Admiral Thrawn around, or Inquisitor (whatever the name ofcthe emperors agent was in the tie fighter game) jumping out a side door midflight and helicoperblading his way to a ground fight below.

It would not be the last of the old gunboat. It would be the first of the new gunboat.

Nope.

Of course, Fantasy Flight Games have already implemented the profile, lore, rules and created artwork for the XG-1 Assault Gunboat in one of their games - Edge of the Empire, specifically in the "Fly Casual " source book which came out last year.

So we have precedence for the ship and it's role not only in a 20 year old computer game series, but within the past year in once of FFG's own games - and obviously this depiction will have been green lighted by the relevant people and licensor at Disney and Lucasfilm.

Alpha-Class XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat (rules omitted)

"Designed by Cygnus Spaceworks, the Alpha-class Xg-1 Assault Gunboat is a multipurpose starfighter, excelling at space and planetary attack, interdiction and long-range reconnaissance and patrol. Unlike the more common TIE series, the Alpha-class is equipped with heavy armour, deflector shields and hyperdrives, though these come at the cost of speed and maneuverabilit, making it a less than stellar dogfighter. Heavily armed, the Star Wing is more than a match for most threats, disabling them with it's ion cannons to allow for boarding actions or blasting them out of space with it's lasers and concussion missiles. While used primarily by the Imperial Navy, Star Wings have begun to be employed by Imperial Customs and some planetary defense forces.

Awesomely, the same supplement also contains rules and official artwork for another oft-requested ship for the X-Wing Miniatures Game - the YT-2000.

Azzameen family Scum reunion? Yes please!

The concept of "reimagining" the Gunboat as a shuttle actually causes me physical pain. It's not a shuttle. It's a single-seat heavy fighter.

The Y-wing and B-wing are more of a shuttle than it is.

And FFG are not exactly renowned for doing this level of canon-abuse, so I am not exactly worried about it occurring, either

Im not worried about FFG doing canon abuse. As gecko just showed, they know what the gunboat is. (Thouh it being in edge and not Age says things about how the navy uses them)

As I said earlier, Im more worried about the Mouse. Because as Lucas showed us far too many times, it doesnt matter what we think, the owner can do what they want.

The look of the attachment point was irtentional. I was going to make a couple of variants. heavy cannon version. ship killer missiles. things of that nature. But wasnt sure if there was much point.

I'm guessing the lateral wing guns were changed from the original depiction because they did loo a bit puny. The new guns look pretty serious.

That and they needed to be thicker for reliable printing

Hey Gecko, could you update that with my newer version?

Oh no not the mouse what will we do

I just... Can't believe this shuttle idea being pushed around like it's actually ever going to happen.

All joking aside, I find the Phantom attack shuttle to be an unsettling precedent. It doesnt matter who the manufacturer is (same as the falcon, iirc) it was given flop down wings to make it look like a proper shuttle.

its still better than the gunboat getting the thankfully noncanon xwing-> Tie Hunter treatment.

th- no. It just has those wings. To, you know, control the weapon.

Folds up to fit.

Or F-15 Eagle

You're quite right. I originally put in the F-18 before remembering that certain variants were 2 seaters with a crew member (which would have made my argument quite silly). Poor edit on my part.

There are two-seat F-15 Variants as well.

Actually - if I'm remebering right boeing don't even build or sell single-seat F-15s any more - they don;t have the tooling any more.

(in fact there have been 2-seat version for the majority of nominally single-seat jet fighters built since the war. usually for conversion training purposes, but they're often combat-capable).

F-22 is single-seat only because they felt they could do all the training on sims- same with F-35.

Hey Gecko, could you update that with my newer version?

Done - I had to leave off the suggested builds though as there were already too many images on the post! I've added a link to your thread on the post as well.

Gunbo- huh?

Looking at it next to the tie fighters and the lambada... perhaps it should be large base after all?

Looks way too big to me.

Isn't there an element of perspective here making the Gunboat and the Delta larger?

Keep in mind that X-wing Miniatures TIEs are larger than the early EU would have it - 8.99 m long (solar panels) whereas in the early EU they were more like 6.3 m.

If the Star Wing is 10m long, it should only be a little longer than the TIE.

Yup. Should be comparable in size to the Missile Boat on the far end.

Yeah, a totally official depiction, I'm sure. That GUNBOAT looks like it's very close to the camera. What source is this?

It's one of Fractalsponge's images. A group shot of his renderings.

Way to big, from that picture, the cockpit is almost the same size as the Lambda's. The wingspan also looks to be longer then it should be.

I don't think this representation has been posted yet:

assault_gunboat_orthos.png

Given the dimensions in the bottom left, this one has been drawn to a slightly larger scale than the "official" stats as well.

I imagine the Gunboat if when it arrives would be one of the larger small ship bases, in the mold of the StarViper, K-Wing, Punisher and Mist Hunter.

edit: I'm not sure the Empire would allow the defacing of the Imperial Crest either, but hey.

This is 50% larger than the Assault Gunboat should be.

It's not big. The "official" stats make it 2.6 meter wider than the X-Wing. Comparing the length with the A-Wing, it's only 0.4 m longer.

PS: the pin-up above the Imperial Crest bugged me too.

Edited by Odanan

Putting the Imperial Crest on any ship appears to be unorthodox based on the OT. During the CW it appears the Republic crest was displayed like that, but not in the New Order.

Fixed!

A straight on to the side or frontal image for all the fighters would be a much better perspective than these ones that sho only the gunboat or all of the fighters/shutles at a strange misleading size due to orientation.

Right after Santa shows up, FFG will announce this ship.

Seven months and two days people, you heard it here first.

You better be right JBR7, otherwise the paddlin' stick will be coming out.

No, what you are seeing is a 3 dimensional effect called Field of View.
