XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

If it's not in a McQuarry piece, it's an uphill battle to get something cannonized.

If it's not in a McQuarry piece, it's an uphill battle to get something cannonized.

That's because McQuarry was SW before SW.

I think GUNBOAT fits into that aesthetic quite nicely.

Which one? :P

There's also simply letting it languish in obscurity as a relic of a not-even-Legends videogame.

Not even Legends? Pretty sure all the lucasarts games became legend properties, but now I'm questioning it. GOG and Steam rereleasing them not that long ago must indicate someone in the Mouse House cares.

Yeah TIE Fighter and the Stele Chronicles are both C-canon legends.

As is X-wing, Alliance etc.

Given that we have pilot cards for Keyan Farlander and Maarek Stele and TIE Defenders.

I do acknowledge that we have no other ships that were introduced in TIE Fighter.

The TIE defender though became it's own thing with its own following though, there is no Lego set for the Avenger, Gunboat, or Missileboat.

The Phanton attack shuttle from Rebels isnt even made by cygnus, but keeps the "shuttle" fold down wings in a shuttlelike downward slant.

If the gunboat going to keep these shuttle like aspects, its going to be reimagined as a shuttle.

And the Gunboat, Missile Boat and TIE Avenger have become their own thing with their own following, and if there's (currently) no official LEGO set, it's certainly not for the want of trying on the part of Star Wars fans :

Trolls, gotta love em.

Where is there any example of any ship that was non-TIE which was converted to a TIE aesthetic?

In Rogue One there's a presumed hybrid X-Y-wing that is a troop carrier. Does this make the Y-wing a 2 person crew transport-bomber? Does it make he X-wing a 'personal personnel carrier'?

It's OK Grimmy V. As far as I can tell, Rakaydos is saying he'd be down for a Gunboat so long as it looked like Gosric's design and had a crew slot.

At which point all real Gunboat fans could simply use a black paint marker to erase the crew slot, and they're good to go.

So far FFG has been very respectful to the lore (legends or canon). They wouldn't piss on us Gunboat fans at this stage.

That's funny, I was imagining FFG as that little kid on the back of a pickup truck, pissing on both the GUNBOAT and Missile Boat while standing on a TIE Punisherictor.

I just... Can't believe this shuttle idea being pushed around like it's actually ever going to happen.

Well, it is just the one person pushing the idea.

All joking aside, I find the Phantom attack shuttle to be an unsettling precedent. It doesnt matter who the manufacturer is (same as the falcon, iirc) it was given flop down wings to make it look like a proper shuttle.

its still better than the gunboat getting the thankfully noncanon xwing-> Tie Hunter treatment.

Not sure we can draw any conclusions from the Phantom shuttle. OK, so it has folding wings, but is that intended to be a callback to the Lambda shuttle or is it simply a cool method of incorporating it's docking functionality with the Ghost?

Boeing is well known as a maker of passenger jets and other large aircraft. They also made the F-15 Eagle. The F-15 is not a passenger jet and it doesn't have a crew member even though all of Boeing's transport aircraft do.

Any company that produces a type of aircraft (or spacecraft) for a military organization with seemingly bottomless finances would certainly not be loathe to try to expand into other fields to scoop up some more contract dollars (or credits).

You're right, of course- its just one datapoint, not a trend, and its converse frim the gunboats situation as well. It still makes me think the Mouse might try to take the ship we know as the gunboat in a different directtion.

And on reflection, the concept has potential. Marrak steel flying Rear Admiral Thrawn around, or Inquisitor (whatever the name ofcthe emperors agent was in the tie fighter game) jumping out a side door midflight and helicoperblading his way to a ground fight below.

It would not be the last of the old gunboat. It would be the first of the new gunboat.

Nope.
