I don't think the group is ever really gonna decide on a next ship they want to really really go full cult over.

I mean, the TIE Avenger has been superseded by the Advanced and Silencer, the Missile Boat.... the Gunboat does what it does and the DX-9... We already have plenty shuttles.

So for Imperials what is left that anyone actually wants?

Yeah same here. It would be incredibly thematic and almost completely pointless in competitive play. And my favourite, the much more offensively-oriented ATR-6, would have to be either entirely too expensive or entirely too broken to warrant putting into the game.

For the ATR6 (and actually DX-9) I'd just model-swap them for the Deci and Shuttle respectively. I might one day get a space shark (my name for the ATR-6).

Arguments could be made for making the ATR-6 a Gozanti...

Oh hot dang, that's a fair point. The ATR-6 is only seven meters or so longer than the Decimator, although the Gozanti has almost 20m on the ATR-6. Might have to look into scratch-building those two then for some custom fun. Incapacitating and boarding was kind of a large part of Imperial security.

When I do campaigns I tend to gravitate toward boarding actions. Not just star wars either, 40k... Heck even games like Space Engineers and Empyrion I like blast and boarding.
I blame the X-wing series for making me into a very effective space pirate/space marine.

One of my big wants is a battlefrontesque game where you can properly space fight / fly cover for boarding / be a boarding marine in one great game. Battlefront II had the right idea, Galaxies made a start with POB, Angels Fall First is nearly there...

This is seriously my BIGGEST hope for forthcoming Battlefront II (2017) content. Not quite as broken up as the Death Star mission thingy in Battlefront (2015); I'd want the one big match to include fighter combat and then a boarding team.

Hmm... I can do that...

Call me sentimental but I would love to have Maarek Stele in a Guboat down the road. Even same PS and ability, it would just give me the warm fuzzies. Kind of like flying him in a Defender; it just feels good. Plus now, I mean, A Score to Settle on TIE/x7 Stele isn't a bad way to spend a third of your list.

To dampen some enthusiasm though, this thing is basically punisher prices for a minimal durability boost over the bomber

I'm sure SLAM Mobility assuages some of this, but still worth noting

I dunno though, the ability to slam away and reload gives it a very different playstyle, at least potentially.

Sure, new pilots would be cool (specially Maarek)... but heck, they even gave us 2 titles at once. So many ways to play with the beloved Gunboat...

With the addition of reload I feel it will undoubtedly have some interesting play on the board. I am just happy the Gunboat is an official piece. I hope to find some interesting and very Imperial ways to make players suffer, especially in tournament play.

I'm trying to resist being swept away on a white-water raft of enthusiasm. It isn't working.

Although on the subject of caution, I think the best idea is to make a Gunboat an incredibly bad idea to approach from the front. Cannons, missiles, the lot. Supplement with some area-denial like a Decimator or TLTs? We need final costs to really fine-tune squad ideas but even just Scanners and a Harpoon on a Nu isn't something I'd want to have to deal with again and again.

As far as I know, the Gunboat was barely mentioned in novels. No toys, no games since XWA, nothing until the Edge of the Empire RPG put it in I think a pilot-class sourcebook.
