Horton Salm with Ion Cannon Turret, Proton Torpedoes and that's that.
Sure, gramps, but has horton ever placed anything without expertise?

I don't know, these young whippersnappers nowadays with their new-fangled "Conditions" and their Expertise!
Back in my day, if you wanted to change a Focus result you needed a Focus token. Or to be Luke!
Give me a good old fashioned Howlrunner TIE swarm any day, chips for tea, not half!
Oh, for the days before jumpmasters....

I am curious as to what ordnance selections people are leaning towards here, though. I'm finding it hard to not look at Homing Missiles, despite the price. I've gotten so much use out of them with TIE Bombers, that I'm not sure if I'm doing it out of habit, or because they're genuinely as good as I remember.
Actually when I'm thinking about free access to Reload, Homing Missiles might be a great contender. Always four attack dice, you get to spend your TL to modify dice, and you nullify Evade tokens if applicable. That might well be worth it over the two points saved with Cruisers, but frankly it depends on the dial.

Evade tokens went out of style and Xg-1s lack mods, so good old concussion missiles or harpoons it should be. At least if you want to go with LRS and hit and run tactics. Cruise missiles seem a little dangerous in this regard, if they follow you, you are never able to speed up enough AND getting them into arc at the same time.
In X-Wing, flight simulator X-Wing, the Gunboat made an inauspicious appearance when you first notice the alert that they've jumped out of hyperspace. Then, you'd notice your homing lock warning start to flicker before someone shouted "RED LEADER! INCOMING MISSILE!"
You'd spend the next five minutes trying to dodge a concussion missile with a tiny hitbox. Then, another would be fired. And another. And another.
My try would be 3x Assault Gunboats with Long Range Scanners, Concussion Missiles, and Ion cannons. If there's points, also equip HLCs or jamming beams, depending on how they work. The twin cannons is interesting because another configuration to try is HLCs and Autoblasters.... or are autoblasters still treated with distain? At least it would be an improvement over the standard guns.

That's why you just fly straight at them and shoot the missile as soon as it launches.

In the original X-Wing, we didn't have a helpful yellow box to indicate where the fighter was in the distance. Besides, it left you open to other fighters taking up position behind you.
It was easier on the earlier missions, but one of the hurdles I faced was the Death Star, where so many fighters were swirling around and the TIE Bombers and TIE Advanced would be throwing these at your X-Wing.

Remember kitting out X-wings with Protons to deal with Howlrunner? Good times...
My heart skips a beat every time I see the home page with the announcement of Wave 12. I'm still in awe and disbelief that the Gunboat is actually coming! I cannot wait! Last time I was this excited was the announcement of Imperial Veterans with the awesome new TIE defender upgrades - not surprisingly, also a ship introduced in the old X-wing and TIE Fighter games.

The death star mission was surprisingly easy when you ignored the mission briefing and the movies and did the reasonable thing and approached the exhaust port from above instead of doing a trench run. Star Wars weapon fire is so slow that evading it as it comes is trivial.

Yep! The "trench run" itself makes no sense.
The trench is a death trap with Vader on your tail. I think I tried for an hour. At that point I went "this is stupid" approached from above, went into the trench in the last second … easy peasy.
I am not an imperial player, but so happy for this. 2 on preorder on my paycheck.

Super Horton with title, EPT droid, Marksmanship and TLT. Who needs expertise?
Proton Torps, EM and chimps for that optional alpha (and beta) strike. Gimme that fat Horton!

I tried to make that work before TLT was a thing. VI Horton, dutch and Squad leader Jan Ors
I agree.

Concussion missiles fired out of TIE Bombers got me there too. It's been a while since my last try though.
I'm also in a bit of awe that the Gunboat is finally coming. Some hate the craft but I like how atmospheric and sleek it looks. In the mind's eye I can see these fighters engaging X-Wings, top-gun style, over water. I've never gone to the length of magnetizing my fighters to let them fly at angles, but I just might start for the XG-1.
Norsehound,
I'm still beside myself too! Thank you FFG! Thank you!
Bah, hate? Don't believe the naysayers and unbelieving negative Nancies. (No offense to any persons named Nancy out there, sorry!) It was a protracted campaign and we've finally reached out goal! ![]()

All we need now though, is for it to appear in Armada! ![]()
Would love a 'reinforce' mechanic too.
Imagine the different types of scenarios that could turn up in new campaigns now that the Empire has a handful of (non-scum) hyperspace capable craft!
Can I just point out though...now more than ever, I have grave grave fears for my wallet.
Hehehe!
As much as I'd love Armada XG-1s to deploy apart from ships or with rogue, since X-Wings don't I don't think they will either. It's also kind of hard to picture what they would do with Firesprays in the way, but that's for FFG to decide. I do want the craft for Armada.

It makes more sense in universe where the point of the trench is to hide from the majority of the turrets, which are not so easily dodged in the films as they are in the games.
In the death star trench run the r2 unit boosted your engines to unimaginable speed, something that wasn't happening outside. And the Trench run was something like 30kms long.. doing it outside and then drop over the exhaust port was no good solution. ?
Not to mention that it was easy, shields set to full forward recharging 'em with the cannons' energy. ?

The irony here is that the plan was to hide from the turrets, while the trench was full of turrets AND they did not approach the deathstar at some magical blind spot to enter the trench either. The trench proves to be a deathtrap, meanwhile does the movie show plenty of dog fighting outside of the trench. And the movie on top portraits the exhaust port going straight going straight into core, meaning that doing a dive would be more reasonable and easier to hit the **** thing in the first place.
Add to that that the X-Wing mission starts rather far away from the trench and wants you to follow the trench for many, many kilometers first. My problem was that Vader forced me leave the trench to regenerate my shields far too often to actually approach the exhaust port from the trench. Just leaving the trench made it easy.
Anyway the trench run is almost as cool in star wars as it is in 633 Squadron, so still pretty cool and awesome, but it is not as good integrated into the story.
