XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

I think, assuming the "Customs boat" idea isnt picked up for the han solo movie, the gunboats next best chance is another "deployment shenaigans" wave, where being able to deploy anywhere on the map on turn 2, but with a weapon disabled token, would be the gunboat's gimmik.

I will pay @Khyros to add LED engine glow and optic landing lights to prove otherwise!

I feel like I jumped in the middle of a 250+ page thread - did they announce W12 with a gunboat? Or is this 3D printer. If the latter, I will gladly light it up. If the former, most 3D printed pieces (unless specifically designed for it) aren't really accessible to light.

Whee lag double posting!

Sorry Khyros, just thought I'd plug your amazing lighting mod topic! If only the Gunboat had been announced. :(

Although, there is a Gunboat 3D print with folding wings that comes in multiple components, I imagine that might not be so bad to light up!

Ah, gotchya. Though @Odanan could have fooled me (er, he did!) with that picture!

Photoshop needs to become Realityshop and make the Gunboat an official FFG release!

I NEEEEEEED IT

I love the paint job on those gunboats!
That is exactly the right colors they should have if released!
(Not that white and red one from the fake expansion pack that makes it look like a rebel ship)

Now I want to get myself some 3D printed gunboats!

I'd actually go for darker cockpits. Without contrast, they feel washed out compared to the crisp tie fighters.

Agreed, black gloss cockpits like the rest of the ships would be fine. I think Azrapse's right about the hull's colour scheme, though - I'd take TIE grey/blue over Lambda white on them.

@Khyros - this is the multi-component Gunboat I mentioned. Looks like the main hull comes in two components, split at the missile pods, which I'm guessing would make it a bit easier to add engine glow (although light bleeding through might be an issue with these materials, especially with the folding wings being part of the design).

This is a superb piece of design work.

Herm... Perhaps... Especially if I go ahead and put the battery in the base (which I would most likely have to do for a Lambda, so I would expect this to be the same thing). In that case all I really need to do is access behind the engines, and cut out a channel for the wires. As for light bleed - most of that can be resolved with reflective tape and interior surface painting. So yes, I would say this design is lightable.

OMG, that's too much good stuff for my old hearth.

What if Rho Squadron, the generic, had the innate ability to gain a TL on a ship at Range 3 if used in conjunction with the Reinforcements card? This would give the Gunboat a more solid role as not only an alpha strike fighter, but also as the cavalry coming to the rescue of overwhelmed Imperial forces.

What would be cool is a pilot ability or something that says "you may treat your red target lock token as if it were on any ship at range 1-3"

That would really help with eliminating the need for deadeye if it were on a low pilot skill.

OK, so in my continuing quest to provide you with some lovely Gunboaty info to discuss, I managed to find this cool little Wordpress blog post, complete with CAD Gunboat and home-stroke-university-made models, using the Y-Wing BTL-A4 Ion idea, no less!

I reckon we need to scour the web and see just how many fan-made Gunboat projects there are out there...

O.O

Ohh geeze!!! Holy!

I think this has got to be the BEST rendition of the Gunboat to-date!! :o:o:o

Ohh my god!! Those gorgeous flight groups! Tau and Mu?

Ehh? Gunboat with a Lambda cockpit? No way, the view is too restricted!! She ain't meant to be a shuttle! Fighter pilots need to see all around them, so they can throw themselves deep into a furball! :D:D:D

Thanks for sharing FTS Gecko!!!

Forgot to finish off!!!

After seeing those images - I need a new shirt, pants, clothes, chair, desk, monitor...Gunboat!!! :D

Accidentally posted!

Just throwing this out there. The Gunboat's wings fold like this. :-P Doesn't make as much sense structurally, but they don't actually fold in during flight, just for storage. Looks cooler this way, IMO. ;-)

So, don't get me wrong here, I'm definitely pro gunboat, but what do people think that the gunboat as envisioned in this thread could bring that the Empire doesn't already have access to?

Nothing. Nor does it have to.

As long as it's not completely the same, it's worth having in the game. And a nice Cannon carrier that can also take Unguided Rockets would be nice to have.

o_O why would you need a cannon AND UGR?

An utilitarian (and cheap) cannon might be useful.

(But between a Mangler and UGR, what would you take, anyway?)

Light Ion Cannon
Range 1-2
2 Dice
1 point

Would anything be broken with such an upgrade?

In the current game and meta, basic jousters are really struggling. The closest things to consistently successful jousters are Jumpmasters and TIE Defenders, both of which have elements of what the gunboat probably will have (the TIE D Defender's double shot and the Jumpmaster's ordnance capabilities) but they also have things that the gunboat won't (360 degree turret and access to Attani for the boats, three evade dice for the Defender and in both cases white turnaround moves).

Given that the probable closest analogue to the gunboat (BTL-A4 Y wing with an Ion cannon turret) isn't exactly tearing up the tables, do people think the gunboat will bring something that will make it more of a competitive force than, say, the U Wing? Will it be down to pilot abilities? What could the gunboat bring to the competitive scene that we haven't already seen, or that won't simply see it arc dodged into insignificance?

What I hope to see out of the Gunboat is something that fills the hole in the imperial arsenal right around the hull/shield point of the X/Y-wings for rebels with its own style.

I would give it the option to fire linked ions and lasers with a title. Odnan's proposal is certainly a good fit.

I also like the idea of giving it something all it's own. Since it is a customs scanner ship in the Tie Fighter game I would give it some Boba Fett type power. May discard a TL and this card to discard one illicit or scum only upgrade from TL'd enemy ship.

I would prefer it to have a unique role or gimmick, not being just a TIE/SF without rear arc or an imperial B-wing. Sure those are its stats. But a ship is more than its stats.

Its signature was the ion cannons, being the cheapest, most ordinary imperial ship able to carry a tractor beam, its sturdiness, its 16 missiles, and its hyperspace mobility.
If I need to choose, I'd like it to become a ship that is about controlling other ships. Not only being a cheaper carrier of ion and tractor than the TIE/D or the Firespray (the lambda is not nimble enough to control anything), but also able to do something special with those tokens, beyond their default effect.

For example, it has been said many times that a double attack is not great if the attacker cannot properly modify both attacks.
In that sense, some particualr upgrade/title should give it some perk that lets it use those tokes in its favor.

Or to do something fancy with control tokens:

"After performing an attack that hits, you may spend one ion, tractor, or stress token from the defender to assign one ion, tractor, or stress token to the defender."

This would allow it to give a great versatility and control ability.

I don't know. Something fun and crazy that let's you mess up their plans, so that when they see a gunboat at the other side of the table, they think "Oh, crap. It's one of those things" and forces them to fly differently.
