XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

I hope you are not the guy playing in that video!

That guy sounds totally like little Anakin piloting while stoned, after having spent the last years drinking whisky for breakfast.

Not me I'm afraid; just another X-Wing/TIE Fighter fan flying the good ol' Gunboat.

I know I've said this before, but re-reading the Wave 11 release article is making me a sad panda.

FFG: How did you settle on the ships in this wave of expansions?

AD: Well, we're always looking to add something new with each wave. We saw that the Scum and Villainy faction was lacking a heavy bomber along the lines of the K-wing, the Empire had nothing with a turret slot, and the background of the Auzituck gave us a chance to adapt the reinforce action for small ships.

MB: As always, the decision involved a lot of people. We proposed a number various ships, and got the go-ahead to move forward on some of them. Also, we had wanted to do the Scurrg for a while and had been waiting for the right opportunity.

In other words, "Please don't blame us, all we can do is ask". Would like to know what other ships have been proposed down the years, though. YT-2000? Skipray? Cloakshape? I'm guessing FFG have concept art, rules and prototypes knocking around for quite a few unapproved/unreleased ships.

I'm guessing we'll see a couple of the remaining Rogue One ships (Krennic's Shuttle, TIE Reaper, Cargo Shuttle) when Wave 12 is announced. I'm still hoping we'll see some PC game love instead, though.

Oh, don't say that... :(

Rogue One stuff does makes sense, though. There's still the three unreleased ships from the film, and they're are almost certain to come out at some point.

The only stumbling block I see is that all three unreleased ships are Imperial (including the potentially cross-faction Cargo Shuttle). It's possible the Empire could get some love with a Ghost-style double pack, with the TIE Reaper and Krennic's Shuttle sold as a single box, while the Rebels get the Cargo Shuttle.

We shall see in a month or so, I guess.

It's all a smokescreen. Once they've got us all convinced it's never gonna happen, BAM!! Gunboat!

Now everyone act all heartbroken and lament the fact that the Gunboat is lost to us forever and it might speed things up a bit. ;)

Cargo Shuttle, why to you even consider it for this game?

Well we got the Quadjumper, so I'd say pretty much anything from the films is fair game at this point.

And the Cargo Shuttle at least both flies and shoots things, on screen.

Plus it might let us have K-2SO in the game.

Not reason enough (sorry K-2SO), specially if it means another Imperial ship high-jacked by the Rebels.

They can always do a multi-faction ship, and do the same thing where only a single card is available to the rebels.

Save the Gunboat @rubberduck. Save the dream!

I've got a Gunboat feeling about this?

Thanks also for posting that LP, the laughing was a bit much at the end but watching a single Starwing inspect and destroy an entire Rebel cache really tugs the heartstrings.

FTS Gecko!

What would Benny say if he saw this disheartening post of yours???

(Of course he'd simply say say: SPACESHIP! GUNBOAT! :D)

And yes, thanks for the video - ahh Gunboat how you sing when you hyperspace...

Benny loves a bit of Gunboat.

OK, so in my continuing quest to provide you with some lovely Gunboaty info to discuss, I managed to find this cool little Wordpress blog post, complete with CAD Gunboat and home-stroke-university-made models, using the Y-Wing BTL-A4 Ion idea, no less!

I reckon we need to scour the web and see just how many fan-made Gunboat projects there are out there...

Those look amazing, really would love to field a wing of those on the tabletop.

You could probably accomplish this simply by reading this thread.

Funnily enough, I did notice yesterday that when I googled "X-Wing Miniatures Forum", the XG-1 Assault Gunboat topic popped up as one of the sitelinks!

I know I risk possible lynching from the gunboat crowd... But am I the only one that prefers the nose style of the Lambda? I feel it would give the gunboat some much needed star wars character

No, you're not the only one. In fact, it makes sense, as the Gunboat is based on the Lambda aesthetic in the first place, and there's a few of examples of people who've tried to incorporate it into their own designs:

And of course the Missile Boat had a very Lambda-inspired cockpit design in X-Wing Alliance:

Personally, I wouldn't be averse to more Lambda-esque design cues if it meant we actually got the model.

Burn the heretics!!!

This is the Assault Gunboat:

And you can't improve what is already perfect.

I will pay @Khyros to add LED engine glow and optic landing lights to prove otherwise!

So, don't get me wrong here, I'm definitely pro gunboat, but what do people think that the gunboat as envisioned in this thread could bring that the Empire doesn't already have access to?

In the current game and meta, basic jousters are really struggling. The closest things to consistently successful jousters are Jumpmasters and TIE Defenders, both of which have elements of what the gunboat probably will have (the TIE D Defender's double shot and the Jumpmaster's ordnance capabilities) but they also have things that the gunboat won't (360 degree turret and access to Attani for the boats, three evade dice for the Defender and in both cases white turnaround moves).

Given that the probable closest analogue to the gunboat (BTL-A4 Y wing with an Ion cannon turret) isn't exactly tearing up the tables, do people think the gunboat will bring something that will make it more of a competitive force than, say, the U Wing? Will it be down to pilot abilities? What could the gunboat bring to the competitive scene that we haven't already seen, or that won't simply see it arc dodged into insignificance?

I think, assuming the "Customs boat" idea isnt picked up for the han solo movie, the gunboats next best chance is another "deployment shenaigans" wave, where being able to deploy anywhere on the map on turn 2, but with a weapon disabled token, would be the gunboat's gimmik.
