I was wondering if anyone thinks there's a chance to see an FO Assault gunboat in Ep9? Think how awesome that would be if the Knights of Ren haul around in XG-1 FOs?

Acceptable if it's in something other than blinding white trimmed with black.... I mean it's fine for the TIE's but if you've seen the new images of the FO/Avenger it just looks off...

In my head canon, Ep7 (and probably Ep8 and Ep9) are in the same dark corner of the Vong.

That's sad, but I am in the same stance as you are.
I find it really shocking how I can like Rogue One so much, and Episode 7 so little, while they both came from the same company.

And the Gunboat was always dark grey and the length of an X-wing, aboutish.
I don't really know from where started the misconception that it was the size of a lambda shuttle and white. That picture of the fake Gunboat expansion pack?

no, original gunboat came in standard pixel grey, with pixelized red stripes.

That was not always like it. They added the red stripes to it in X-Wing Versus TIE Fighter.

Originally it had much subtler ones on the engine/launcher blocks:

It looked more uniform and "serious", and less like someone had painted speed lines on it.

It's well known that the XvT team went a bit crazy with colors (it was the first time they could apply textures to objects, and they made everything look really... festive).
Most people are now used to the colorful version of it, but I'd like it more if the Empire had the duller version. Somehow it feels right that they wouldn't go with the carnival version, by looking at their other dull TIEs and capital ships.

Is still standard imperial grey, not Lambda white.

Yes, but IIRC the Lambdas were the same colour in the original version of X-Wing rather than white.

Perhaps the Emperor's shuttle and other dignitaries Lambdas were white, but I'll guess the standard Lambdas wouldn't not be Imperial gray, but I'm just following the logic thread...

In any case, it seems Cygnus Spaceworks has been almost deleted from canon. Now all TIEs and shuttles are designed and built by the same Sienar Fleet Systems.
So if the Gunboat and the Missile Boat were reintroduced to canon, they would belong to Sienar repertoire, and I guess it would be okay for you that they use Sienar's exclusive Pantone colors.

From a lore standpoint, having two companies fight for contracts with the empire seemed close to real world setting. (Boeing vs Northrop Grumman)

Cygnus spaceworks had allot of neat designs to in old EU.
