The Empire had two ships types in the movies, and all the new Imperial ships came from them taking those types and making slight modifications to them. The Gunboat isn't any more original than the Defender.

I would agree that the Defender shares a similar level of uniqueness with the gunboat in respect to the base model ships that they are designed from especially at the time of their original development.

However, I feel like there is a glut of very similar TIE designs at this point that aren't significantly different from each other. Having a second white pointy winged ship (with a completely different role) at this point feels much more original than a 12th solar paneled fighter craft.

I'm happy to see the Aggressor, because I know a few people excited for it.

My problem is not so much directly the lack of gunboat, it's that the games reached a point where all the upgrades and options seem bloated. I've lost track.

I suppose really it was the EP7 content that started this downwards spiral, at least for me.

I just want the Gunboat before Ep8 and Ep9 content (which I won`t buy no matter what) flood the game.

Well, it's a notch more original, in the sense that the gunboat takes a shape that reminds of that of the shuttle (a transport, basically), but adapts it to make a starfighter out of it while keeping the manufacturer style.
Meanwhile the Defender is just another starfighter derived from another starfighter. I mean. Same ball cockpit, same interceptor panels. It only changes the 3 pylon part.

The gunboat never was white. It was like dark grey. Much darker than the TIEs grey.

The gunboat may not be to everyone's tastes but the Aggressor is objectively fugly. It's probably uglier than a 6 year old's space ork kitbash. It's even uglier than the TIE Punisher.

I'm also not keen that it's a Mary Sue fighter with turret, double missiles, etc. Incidentally this is exactly what people were accusing gunboat fans of wanting.

That said, it fills an interesting niche and the generic is cheap and spammable. X-wing to me is most fun with generic pilots.

Original TIE Defender was a far more unique design - for lack of a better description, it was both bulkier (had a sense of being a heavier ship) and more compact (solar panels were closer into the ship). Later art turned it into a TIE Interceptor-with-a-third-solar-panel that, for me at least, killed a lot of the feel of the ship.

Yes, you are right.
Also, I think the cockpit was oval, not a sphere. More like the one from the TIE Avenger.

And the pylons weren't just a copy of those of the TIE Fighter, but more like flat surfaces, straight vertical in the rear edge and oblique in the front edge.

The canonical T/D has been heavily simplified, as if there were a collection of TIE parts that all TIEs must use, and they had to remodel it using only those parts.

I don't know... I think we are better wit the current versions of the Defender and the Avenger...

Well, the old model above looks pretty good (except for the cockpit). Much better than the one in the previous post (which had some weird big wings).

About the newer design below, I like the cockpit ball and the shape of the wings, but not the length of the supports (wings didn't need to be so far from the body) and the size of the ball (too small in relation with the wings).

I think in the end the XWMG TIE Defender turned up very well... This one is the best I could think of:

Tzeench is now hatching a plan to put the Gunboat into episode 9. Now not only will we have to wait years to get the Gunboat release, but you'll never be able to buy one.

Nah, Harold S. Tzeench: Major Disney shareholder and exec, obsessive forum lurker, and all around horrible guy. He's the guy that greenlit the TIE Punisher and insisted on Leia hugging Rey instead of Chewie after Han died (he thinks Chewbacca is a Klingon and wouldn't want to hug anybody).

I'd say more, but people who mess with too much of his fun tend to wind up as skeletons in one of the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' attractions.

i don't think any of the TIEs we've gotten can be considered ugly, even the Punisher is just MOAR bomber, and the Bomber is my Favourite TIE design. BUT I'm still disappoint that GUNBOAT is not here to bring glory to the empire along side his TIE brothers. For a ship that was introduced over a quarter century ago at the beginning of the Nu EU it has been treated as the red head step child by FFG for appearantly one reason: Cockpit Envy.

...see, that was what annoys me the most about the Punisher. I love the TIE Bomber, and want to fly it and get value from it, and the Punisher was simply too much of a rip off of the original. Larger wings and a few extra pods, big whoop.

I'd much prefer to use the original TIE Bomber than "TIE Bomber +1".

All I'm seeing is all these rehashed/crappy TIEs and no Gunboat or Avenger. It really is a shame.
