XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

Dude, I tried out 5x Scarif Defenders last night on Vassal, and they were SO MUCH FUN!

I have been tempted to pick up 5 Strikers in order to run 4 Imperial Recruits plus Countdown with a Hull Upgrade. Having flown 5 Cartel Marauders to death last year, 5 Strikers is like that list, but on crack.

I've decided...no gunboat = no $$$ spent on this game. I don't play very often anyway, so I really don't care what's out there for competitive play in the expansions I'm not buying. I want my gunboat and nothing less. Take note FFG...no more $$$ from me. (yeah...I know...they won't care lol).

What do we want?

Gunboat!

When do we want it?

Wave 12!!!!

What do we want?

Gunboat!

When do we want it?

GUNBOAT!

Don't even think about it, FFG...

Yep, don't even think about it!!

Yeah, there are some really bad designs out there...

I'm almost in the Gunboat or bust category too.

What is this monstrosity?

I'm slipping there almost by default. I had to really convince myself to get a /sf, I haven't bothered with the Striker and now comes another bland forgettable TIE variant that I'll sit on the fence about for a while and ultimately pass over.

I don't recognise that TIE at all. Which is odd, as the image is using am X-Wing Alliance logo. It's certainly not a ship in the game.

X-Wing Alliance does have an extensive modding community though, so I guess it must be a fan-made design.

I've noticed my own purchases slowing down over the last couple of waves as well, to be honest. I don't own any of the First Order ships (aesthetic choice, I prefer my Imperials traditional battleship grey), I only picked up the Fang and Shadow Caster from the Rebels releases, the U-Wing is the only ship I've picked up from Wave 10 (because it's bloody gorgeous, I haven't put it on the tale yet though) and I'm not totally convinced by Wave 11 - I might pick up a Scurrg though as it can fit straight into a Rebel or Scum list.

I will definitely be getting the C-ROC, but apart from that, it's probably going to be a quiet year by the looks of things.

Give me the Gunboat though, and someone will need to take my wallet off me before I bankrupt myself.

I have one, I will get a second, and very likely I'll get a third, fourth, and fifth. I wish TIE interceptors were this much fun.

FIVE Strikers are MONSTERS! I flew 5 Scariffs with AA and LWF. They were crazy good!

It's not an "official" ship. Someheretic one (with very bad taste) made that up.

Yeah, there is so many bad fanmade stuff.

The problem I have with these TIE Aggressor and TIE Oppressor fighters is that they look very much in-line with those same atrocious fanmade TIE Designs that are out there. They hacked apart a TIE Advanced and glued spare bits on, gave them edgy names, and pushed them into Star Wars galaxies. Now plastic is being used to render these designs which should have been consigned to memory like so many other Legends designs. Meanwhile, more subtle and better loved designs continue to go unused.

Exactly so. And chief among the better-loved designs is the Assault Gunboat.

Well what can the Gunboat be now that the Agg is coming out? Still a cheaper Cannon carrier than the Defender or Firespray. Still a possible introduction of reserves into X-Wing. Still a heavy ship for the Empire in an age where green dice and token stacking are becoming less and less effective compared to all the different damage and abilities in the game.

There's still a rather large niche out there for the Gunboat to fill, just a matter of FFG creating something to fill it.

And by something I mean the Gunboat.

FFG can make new "niches". They have been making them all the time. For example, the "bomber" role properly didn't exist until Wave 7, when the K-Wing and Deathrain arrived. (Some ships could before drop bombs, but that was more like a sleeve trick than their main contribution to the game).
What is the niche of the Quadjumper? Not a mere blocker, but something weirder.
The Protectorate Starfighter, and in special Fenn Rau and Old Teroch, aren't properly arc-dodgers or jousters, but something else. I think the best description I have read of them is "living missiles".

The designers can come up with some cool new mechanich, that is remotely related to the Gunboat, and apply it to that ship. We can only guess, but you could just throw some of the most exotic ideas we have been suggesting here, or even more exotic ones:

  • Something hyperspace related (deployment, placement, re-placement).
  • Something missile plus cannon related (missile-buffing beams, BTL-A4/TIE D kind of mechanic between cannons and missiles)
  • Something related to being a non TIE (alternative deployment rules, Non-TIE only upgrades)
  • Something related to disabling ships (dealing ions, weapons disabled, jamming, temporarily flip upgrades down...)

And that doesn't even account for the statline, action bar, or dial.

I basically boycotted FFG until the gunboat gets released. <_< TIE Aggressor... well some fans will be happy.

Piggybacking off the X-Wing Haiku topic...

The Empire is weak

When will FFG listen?

We want the GUNBOAT.

Anyone that thinks the Assault Gunboat looks better than the Aggressor is either blinded by nostalgia or just has bad taste in general.

The Aggressor is a cool design. It's an Advanced with the back of it's panels clipped(as opposed to the front that the Interceptor and Defender have) to give the turret a better field of fire. It's awesome.

The Oppressor COULD have been a cool design, but they ****ed it up. Individually, the solar panels on the Oppressor are a cool shape. And having 3 is certainly nothing new. But instead of putting 3 of them equidistant around the craft like the Defender and the Phantom, they put two on the sides, and then one directly on top, which makes it look like there should actually be 4, and the bottom one fell off.

And then, for some reason, the top panel is also further back, even though it's the same as the side panels, which makes it look even more like an afterthought.

Bad post.

This is the most gorgeous ship in the Star Wars universe.

I gotta admit I've not picked up anything since wave 9. Heck. I haven't opened my TIE V1s or mist hunters yet.

Put me in the Gunboat or bust category.

I think you are being sarcastic, but Poe's law is kicking in here so I am going to double check. Do you honestly believe that taking some fingernail clippers to an existing ship and trimming off a couple pieces of solar panels makes a much better design than the 5 winged originality of the XG-1?

I mean TIE design space has turned into: how many panels should it have, and how pointy should they be?

That is not how I would describe the Gunboat. To me, it was always them taking the Lambda, shrinking it down to fighter size, and adding two more wings. Because that's exactly how they designed it.

The Empire had two ships types in the movies, and all the new Imperial ships came from them taking those types and making slight modifications to them. The Gunboat isn't any more original than the Defender.
