Lots of pilots have been proposed on this thread. I'd rather see Stele in a TIE Avenger, which was his prefered ship, or a Bomber, my prefered TIE. I think the GUNBOATERS have it covered in the past 200+ pages.

if stele does come with the GUNBOAT then he should have a special Emperor's Reach title, which can also go on his Defender and Advanced pilot cards as well.

I like that idea. A card assigned to a pilots name. Certainly there's a few rebels that could work for too.

A cheap way to 'fire link' the GUNBOAT without going crazy with upgrades. Easy Imp control.

Still hopeful that someday they will give us the Gunboat we all love and want. I honestly haven't been excited about anything new for the game in a while...but a Gunboat release...that'll get me back into the game for sure. C'mon FFG...

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Assault Gunboat the Rho? I thought not. It's not a story the X-Wings would tell you. It's a TIE Fighter Legend. Assault Gunboat was a Reinforcement of the Empire, so powerful and so wise he could use Shift+R to influence command to create squadrons... He had such knowledge of piloting that he could even keep TIE Fighters he cared about from dying. The request for reinforcements is a pathway through many missions some consider to be unbeatable. He became so powerful... the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his TIE Defender everything he knew, then his TIE Defender ionized him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.

A little while ago (a few waves ago, actually) I developed my own gunboat.

The goal was to create something true to the original gunboat, while making something to bring back missiles (to the point where a missile boat would be unnecessary), while also putting in a proper SLAM as it's supposed to be used. In effect, my gunboat is a merger of the classical gunboat and the missile boat, because I didn't want to see a missile boat but I did want to see the SLAM used as it was originally created to be used: to advance the damage and use of ordinance. I saw other posts talking about giving the gunboat a secondary weapon (because it did carry an ion cannon) and giving it 3 shield points, but in order to keep its cost low (so that you'd want to spend points on ordinance) and to focus on its primary role as a missile ship, I decided to steer away from those options (because we aren't looking to add another TIE Defender or TIE Advanced here, I'm trying to create a niche that doesn't already exist). This isn't meant to fix or adjust anything anyone has already created and posted here--this is just my own take on the gunboat, before having read any of the other creations in this thread. Again, it's been a long time since I made these, so there may be an effect or ability in a recent wave that breaks them. Now that the forums allow you to attach images directly, I can finally share the ships I had made. For the dial, I would simply have given these the same exact same dial as an X-Wing, with the 3 hard turns being red (as they are in the Y-Wing).

Notes on my ships: Obviously, "Blackhole" and Kueller (below) are more like novelty ships. They have less to do with the niche of missiles and more to do with the theme of their character/namesake. Carith (above) has my favorite ability; he gets more dangerous later and later into the match--as a player, you want him to fire missiles quickly; as an opponent, you want to take him down early.

Went from 20 posts per page to 25 I think. Page count is down but now we gots MOAR GUNBOAT per page!

In what way (re:SLAM)? The Title redeems it, and even makes it better. Also, that's what I said about the Missile Boat in my own comments on my post.

Looking at these cards now, I'm thinking that the title should be 1 point and the Systems slot should be taken off of it and just put onto the ship itself. The ships, too, are perhaps overcosted by as much as 2 points... sigh

The problem is that you are merging the gunboat and the missile boat without seeing anything wrong with it.

It's like hand-waving the Y-Wing and the K-Wing as "basically the same ship".

I still don't see the problem. Is it a thematic problem or a balance issue? If it's thematic, then that's not a problem at all--that's the whole point. For the sake of balance, what I'm doing is trying to incorporate the Gunboat into X-Wing in such a way as to edge the Missile Boat out. We don't need both--that's about as silly as creating a TIE Punisher when we already have a TIE Bomber. (You can tell I don't like the TIE Punisher... and I don't have anything against the Missile Boat, but it doesn't make any sense in game-balance terms to have two ships with the same role/niche. You will either see only one of them ever played, or neither of them if the role is weak [as it is currently with secondary weapon ordinance in Imperials. I'm not talking about a ship taking a single missile/torp here or there, but talking about a ship that makes its entire living off of launching missiles/torps, which, sure, is the Missile Boat in definition and theme, but the Missile Boat won't see the light of day in X-Wing due to its aesthetic being only vaguely Imperial, at best]. This is why my Gunboat doesn't have a secondary weapon cannon slot--I'm not creating another Defender here, but, well, a missile-toting Gunboat.)

The Gunboat and Missile Boat are completely different ships, and have completely separate niches. The Gunboat was effectively the first Imperial multi-role starfighter. Rapid response, patrol, customs, capture, control, assault... it was required to do the lot. That's why it had hyperdrive, ion cannons AND missile pods. It was a workhorse, in the same vein as the Revel X-Wing.

The Missile Boat on the other hand, was EXTREMELY specialised. It was built to be a TIE Defender destroyer. And capital ship destroyer. Well, everything destroyer really. It was the Emperor Hell God Starfighter of Death, and you can't fly it yet. It relied almost exclusively on it's beam systems, SLAM and ordnance.

You're not comparing a TIE Bomber to a TIE Punisher, with all the redundancy that entails, you're comparing a TIE Bomber to a TIE Defender. The Gunboat and Missile Boat share an aesthetic, but that is all.
