XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

Yes, it has always been a middle point between the Y-Wing and the B-Wing, but with a few differences. These are the complete stats of the relevant ships as extracted from the original game in the series. I include also the X-Wing, A-Wing and the TIE Fighter in the same game for context:

  • Y-Wing: Hull = 42, Shield = 75, Speed = 80, Accel = 8, Roll = 28, Pitch = 13, Two Lasers, Two Ion cannons, Two torpedo launchers.
  • B-Wing: Hull = 63, Shield = 100, Speed = 91, Accel = 12, Roll = 36, Pitch = 14, Three Lasers, Three Ion cannons, Two torpedo launchers.
  • Gunboat: Hull = 30, Shield = 100, Speed = 88, Accel = 12, Roll = 64, Pitch = 15, Two Lasers, Two Ion cannons, Two missile launchers.
  • X-Wing: Hull = 21, Shield = 50, Speed = 100, Accel = 12, Roll = 44, Pitch = 15, Four Lasers, Two torpedo launchers.
  • TIE Fighter: Hull = 10, Shield = 0, Speed = 100, Accel = 15, Roll = 48, Pitch = 20, Two Lasers
  • A-Wing: Hull = 15, Shield = 50, Speed = 120, Accel = 16, Roll = 60, Pitch = 18, Two Lasers, Two missile launchers

So all in all it has:

  • Missiles instead of torpedoes, that makes it better at intercepting and worse at attacking capital ships.
  • Similar shields to those of the B-wing.
  • Double the hull of an A-wing, but half of that of a B-Wing. Just between the X-Wing and the Y-Wing.
  • Speed between the Y-Wing and the B-Wing.
  • Maneuverability is measured in two different axes: The Pitch rating is how fast it can turn upwards or downwards, while the Roll rating is a combined movement that mixes classical yaw and roll into one. In the flight sims, when you move left or right, your ship both yaws and rolls in that direction. So Gunboat has identical pitch rating as the X-Wing, but one of the highest roll ratings in the game.
  • Acceleration is on par with the X-Wing and B-Wing.

So, if I got some of the third party stuff and wanted to use it in standard rules game, what ship would best be "reskinned" as an assault gunboat?

I think the TIE/SF would also fit. It's not too agile, it can carry missiles and the tile somehow represents the top mounted gun.

Or the Y-Wing with title. Missiles and Torpedoes have no different in this game, anyway.

Yeah, the Y-Wing is almost perfect but not usable as an imperial :(

Closest overall would probably be a BTL-A4 Ion Turret Y-Wing, with Proton Torpedoes and Extra Munitions. Add an R2 Astronech to give it a slightly better dial (Gunboat was slightly more maneuverable) or a Targeting Astronech.

For an Imperial proxy it's a bit more difficult. TIE Punisher's probably the best bet, but you give up the ion canon.

Why not? Because of the color of the dial?

You have no intention of playing a tournament with Assault Gunboat mini, right? So have fun!

You know, playing TIE Fighter growing up, I always dreaded the Gunboat levels because the thing was just so slow compared to many of the other craft available. As I started replaying the games on higher difficulties (and trying to get the bonus objectives), I began to respect the Gunboat's durability and versatility. When I started really getting into strategy games and applying campaign-level strategy to my understanding of the Star Wars universe, I really started to appreciate the usefulness of such a well-rounded craft being able to deploy without sending a capital ship.

That said, the Gunboat would be a neat addition to the game as it stands, but mostly just for the cool, nostalgia factor (not that there's anything wrong with that). Add in some sort of useful hyperdrive mechanic, though, and the Gunboat would really shine for the Empire.

GUNBOAT!

I still say it needs barrel roll, 2 agility, 4 hull and 3 shields.

Dial like Y-wing but with 4 straight white, maybe red 1 turns.

Title: XG-1 Starwing (1 pt)

Assault GUNBOAT only

If an attack from your primary weapon hits assign an Ion token to the defender.

You may not equip a cannon upgrade.

A cheap way to 'fire link' the GUNBOAT without going crazy with upgrades. Easy Imp control.

Why isn't this ship a thing in this game yet? WHY? This thread has been going on for a thousand generations, are they blind like someone who voted for Trump?

A tie sf that gets a cannon and the Tie /d title is as close as you'll get for a while.

This thread shall not fall!

So I'm expecting the probability of a Gunboat showing up in this next movie to be 0, but hey stranger things have happened.

Next movie, unlikely, but the movie after... Customs Boats would be a welcome way to reintroduce XG1s to canon.

We have the Alpha-class XG-1 Star Wing in the RPG and in the card game, all we need is to have it in the miniatures game.

Ship is so overrated, Skipray BlastBoat is a way better craft

I really like the Skipray.

But: GUNBOAT!

Ship is so overrated, Skipray BlastBoat is a way better craft

While I love the Skipray (and it was technically an Imperial design even if it was rarely if ever used by them), the Gunboat has the Imperial aesthetic going for it. Skipray would be much more likely as a Scum ship

The Skipray would be a large ship at least considering it had a crew of 4. You'd be getting turret for primary, missile and torpedo upgrades, a beam weapon upgrade, and who knows what other doodads? Thing would probably be a 100 point sink all by its lonesome.

Gunboat is much more suitable for a tabletop game.

There definitely needs to be an assault ship wave.

Imp - Gunboat

Scum - Skipray

Reb - ? Starchaser, T-wing, ...

I thought it was no bigger then the Misthunter?

Mist Hunter 15m

Moldy Crow (HWK-290) 29m

Skipray Blastboat 25m

I honestly think we will see the Ewok Glider before the gunboat

Next Wave:

Rebels - H-Wing

Imperials - Xg-1

Scum - Skipray

My wallet would be screaming ^^

Errrrm... No.

Love the Skipray; disagree on that particular profile. 2 dice turret primary, Cannon slot, system slot, torpedo slot and cred slot. Done. Could definitely ser it as a Scum ship.

Rebels will probably get the N-1 or the (awful) Resistance Transport. Either way, there will be a Leia Organa.

As long as it isn't the Resistance Transport, I'm indifferent in what it is.

The FFG forum update is a ploy by the Rebellion to bury the XG-1 Assault Gunboat thread!
