XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

The K-wing and E-wing is legends and we have that. Why can't we get the XG-1 Assault Gunboat? We never had an answer (probaby in fear of the Great Fandom Assault from fans). ...but a yes or no would be nice, and if no, the reason as to why.

What may be the case is thet some a$$ #013 in Disney is all "no we want something else, and we don't give a $#1+ about what fans want." Also "we burned Lucas Arts muahahahaha so Fork the fans!"

They could at least let us have it in X-wing.

**** crapy forum hung and double posted an echo.

The Empire produced various prototypes, not just one, to see what would work, like real militaries!

Who gives a ****. The Empire isn't a real military.

I don't need to see 50 different iterations on the same design just because that's how they design airplanes in real life.

I would have much preferred it if "Here's the prototype for Vader's ship. The Rebels blew one up on Lothal. Then we gave one to the Inquisitor(which the Rebels stole) and Vader(which he wiped out a fleet with). Then later, we gave some to the rest of the Inquisition." But it had all just been the x1.

I guess the TIE Avenger didn't need to exist either huh?
At least the Avenger's got **** the x1 doesn't. There's no functional difference between the v1 and the x1. It's just another toy to sell.

More agile, lighter shielding, lighter armor, far easier to store and produce?

Nope.

Not different at all.

Unless Disney opens up the EU, I'd be happy if they actually came up with something original and stop with the grave robbing to save relevancy. We're already at a point were FFG runs out of Disney ships by the end of the wave. So unless Lucas Arts actually comes up with a significant plot to replace the Retcon, you're not going to be seeing substantial merchandise once the oohs and ahs of the new movies are done.

I sure as **** haven't followed the zomgconsumer brainfart in collections, last couple waves don't interest me and won't until I start seeing some Gunboats, Stealth Xs and Aggressors or Raptors. Time for some Plague Marines for this here Plague Colony.

On the subject of Vader's fighter, just played the X-Wing Alliance mission where the Executer first shows up. The previous couple of missions had Avengers flying around.

This one has a TIE/X1. And it's battering everyone. Beautiful.

Sorry guys, TAPS are a little lazy in terms of design. They only did it because it's in rebels and it's a tie.

It's OK FFG, you don't have to release EVERYTHING in rebels.

You can also do Imperial ships that don't begin with TIE.

But then 'Super'-class SDs are canon while Executor class has been sent to legends, so whatever.

Really? That's as bad as Sheev (you'd become evil too if you had that first name).

Only if it is a shuttle apparently.

At this point, I think it's obvious that when we get the Gunboat in this game, it's not going to be called an Assault Gunboat. FFG seems pretty committed to "Alpha-class Star Wing".

Which I'm okay with, because it fits the naming convention of all the other Cygnus ships we've been getting.

Now they just need to pick a greek letter to assign to the Missile Boat.

Making a prototype to Darth Vader's prototype craft is also silly

Completely agree. The TAP didn't need to exist.

Heh heh heh.

Oi, let's not fight over the details about names - I think, if it comes down to it, if we have to get the Gunboat in as simply the Alpha Class Star Wing, then so be it!

WE...true fans know what it really is!

And chiming in about TAP VS Avenger - the Avenger looks way more deadly/advanced than the Advanced we've got.

Hehehe.

Well sure it looks cooler, but who cares? It is what it is.

Based on FFG's stats. Based on the show, there's no real difference at all. It's a TIE Fighter with shields, a hyperdrive and missiles added on. Just like the x1.

It doesn't even have extra guns or a tractor beam like the Avenger does.

In fact, based on the lore, the thing should have heavier armor, not lighter, since the outside solar panels are covered with extra armor plating.

Ultimate Star Wars has "Executor-class" for Vader's ship. Rogue One: Mission Files, mentions the Mandator-class dreadnought (in the context of the minimum size of ship that would be needed to carry a superlaser.

"Super Star Destroyer" is a generic term for Executors, but also for other similar large ships (newcanon Complete Locations).

Speaking of which, now that Rogue One has introduced the concept of "single chamber" super laser firing and exactly how powerful that is, I would love to see them canonize something like the Eclipse. A Super Star Destroyer with a superlaser just big enough to wipe out a city, not shatter a planet.

And since it's now established that it takes basically 1/8th the Star Destroyer's super laser to do that...

Let me put out that the only reason I'm speaking out against Star Wing is that there's already been some comments maybe 146 pages in the past about how the Gunboat doesn't look 'Imperial' enough since it doesn't have solar panels or a circular cockpit. Calling it the Star Wing puts it in a similar naming class as the alphabet wings and I can just imagine some brainless Disney exec looking at the picture and saying 'so this is for the Rebels right?'. Putting in a word like Assault at least puts an air of violence to the name which we wouldn't want to associate with our lily-white Rebels just like Lucas didn't want to associate revenge with Jedi.

One of our lily white rebels shot an informant that was on his side in cold blood.

I think Disney's got it handled.

But calling it Alpha-class Star Wing puts it in a similar naming class as all the other Imperial shuttle craft, and I can just imagine some brainless Disney exec looking at the picture and going "So this is another one of those foldy wing Empire ships right?"

And they'd be right.

They certainly would.

Edit: I've added the Gunboat's appearance in Star Wars: The Card Game to the first post of the topic, as this is the biggest news we've had since Fly Casual. Thanks for the info Boreas Mun - what a great start to the New Year!

Edit 2: Also, that ability in the card game is absolutely brilliant.

There is also a TIE Aggressor in the Star Wars TCG:

Imperial Reinforcements!

PS: it looks like that 3d printed AG is out of scale (way too large).

IIRC Gosric intentionally made it slightly larger than 1/270 so he could give it folding wings. It's not way too large at all, though - the model itself is just slightly longer than the Kihraxz, although the cockpit's a little bit larger than it should be in that comparision, The Gunboat should be a bulky ship, comparable to the ARC or Punisher.

It looks fine alongside the TIEs.

The Gunboat is 15.1 wide. X-Wing is 12.5 wide, for comparison.

It looks like this model is twice as large as it should. It's beautiful, but the size reinforces the confusion with the Lambda.

Yes. There is still hope.

Twice as big? Really? You do realise that's a TIE Avenger it's pictured alongisde, right? Which is pretty much the same size as the TIE Advanced model? Would it help if I posted pictures alongside an actual X-Wing for reference?

The X-Wing is 12.5 meters long, not 12.5 meters wide. So the Gunboat should be 2.5m wider than the X-Wing is long with wings fully deployed. Honestly, Gosric's Gunboat is slightly oversized (but nowhere near twice as big LOL) and IIRC it was also based in part on Fractalsponge's excellent renderings and scalings. It looks very comfortable alongside the other X-Wing ships.

Can you show a picture of the Gunboat with the wings opened alongside the X-Wing?

Does it? I dunno, I kinda like it being bigger.

Avenger and Aggressor should complete the Advanced TIEs to a reasonable degree. Can't have too many advanced TIEs!

Speaking of which, X-wing had TIE Advanced models that resembled Vader's ship but without the big fan tail and possibly without the bulky wing pylons. It's possible these ships had the standard ball cockpit without extra armor as well. Is it possible that these were the X1 while Vader's ship was either a custom design or an actual prototype that the X1 was based on and was also a limited production model of Vader's prototype ship.

GUNBOAT! (In a card game!)
