XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

Not to alter the thread back to the Gunboat too much. But as I read and post on the forums lately about the X7 being the Imps only go-to due to the mouse slowly nerfing the Aces off the mat and Miranda eating the Punishers lunch; I'm convinced more than ever that the Empire needs a versital, usable, meta infusing ordinance carrier that's worth a ****. I really want a Gunboat; it has to be designedand perform better than the goofy K-Wing (looks like it was designed with crayons)....who's with me?

I'd say that Dark Troopers are just about as canon as they're going to be at this point with the 'Imperial Sentry Droids' that showed up in Rebels. All that was needed were jet packs and they'd be the perfect Phase II or III.

They look closer to a cross between the phase I and phase II, but I loved them nonetheless, it made me smile.

I always thought of the K-Wing as a response to the New Republic obtaining the plans foor the gunboat and the missile boat as it has SLAM. Remember it was built sometime after RTOJ.

We just need the craft it was based off of, the Alpha-class XG-1 Star Wing Assault Gunboat, and the Missile Boat.

No.

At this rate we need anything. Rebels are getting the upper hand because the new Imperial lineup are just filler. A Gunboat would be nice, but things that make Bombers and Punishers more effective missile slingers, TIE Fighter Swarms getting synergy bonuses, and turreted craft like the Aggressor to give more turret fighting dedication or more cost effective superiority craft like Avengers and Clawcraft are just as important.

It's obvious they want to phase Soontir out, but making /Ds or x7s redundant a patch or two from now will just as badly hurt us.

Not sure if hideously ugly or amazing beautiful...

Heh heh heh! Completely agree! On the one hand, it looks like something the Empire might experiment with - on the other it looks like some sort of technological vampire bat terror!

^If I didn't know better, I'd have thought the above was some sort of SEO spam attempt to net more search results...

BAH~!!!! Who am I kidding!!! Everyone! We need to insert more search/ad/keywords in this topic! We MUST unite our loyal brethren under the glorious banner of the Imperial Navy lest they continue to stray from the Emperor's light!!!!

Recomposing myself now: Ahh those Gunboat renders - simply amazing stuff! :P

I think all it needs is to lose the pylons between the tieball and the ordinance pods. Stick the pods against the cockpit, which brins those drsal panels closer together, and the rest is fine.

I thought it was a response to Imperial fortifications and a attempt to start phasing B-Wings and Y-Wings out.

Don't underestimate the size of the Gunboat fandom, Captain.

I remember getting dozens of thumbs up and comments from people for the Gunboat shirt at Yavin last year. And I've lost Tracy of the number of times I've heard someone chime in with "I'm just waiting for the Gunboat and Missile Blat" or "I can't believe DFG hasn't released the Gunboat yet" at store tourneys and the like.

Most of the people people I've met who said that don't visit the forum, and were amazed when I showed them this topic.

We may be a vocal minority on the forum, but there's a LOT of fans of the old PC games out there. Many of them bought into this game in the first place due to the thematic connection with the PC games.

Hey, as a fan of the old games- something everybody seems to forget, I totally understand. But I also know that the TIE Defender simply made more waves than the Gunboat, even if we who flew Gunboats still adore them to this day.

(This is where I note that my all time favorite videogame is from that era- Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight. Truly an amazing game)

I want to see Gunboats just as much as you guys do. Hell, even as avid a fan of Rebels I am, believe you me when I say that the Sentry Bots, while cool and a nice nod to Dark Troopers, are naught but a pale shadow of their inspiration. I know they aren't Dark Troopers and never will be, just as Kanan will never be Kyle or Kota, there are some things you can't replace.

I'm just more or less ready to never get them, even though I remain hopeful.

I kind of prefer them as widespread Imperial droids a la TOR rather than the apex units they were in the old canon.

Isn't that the TIE bomber?

I already know that unless Disney continues to drop the ball, you're not likely to see more EU craft unless they graverob them. That being said, TIE Defenders made more waves out of the sense they needed more boss craft, not because they were more popular. Which they are, because they're OP.

It's just that people need to take a more proactive approach to putting things forward.

Lol No, the TIE Bomber is a mid-level ship that can affect the game, but is stunted compared to other craft.

Same price point and an ordnance carrier.

It's nit exactly "influencing the meta" at the moment though, is it? Which I believe is the point that is being made there.

Basically the hope is that a Gunboat release will help move Imperial players away from Palp Aces/Defenders by providing another viable. competitive option.

Personally speaking, I couldn't care less about viability so long as we get the ship. I fly Kihraxz successfully; meta opinions don't influence me.

Exactly. At this point avoiding variety just kills off ship design, as the only thing that would benefit the game is actual mission settings and revamping old designs.

How about this for a Gunboat pilot ability?

"When you acquire a target lock, all friendly ships at range one may also acquire a target lock on the same ship". PS7 Noble Calder alpha strikes, anyone?

Isn't that redundant? Doesn't that make EVERY ship drawn from the EU graverobbing?

The only way to bring Imps away from Palp is to nerf Palp. As long as he's as ludicrously good as he is, he'll ALWAYS be a top tier choice.

We need gunboats just to recreate epic scenes like this.

See now that's what I'm talking about

Hey, Darth! You're pretty much the authority on all things Imperial! What are your thoughts on the Assault Gunboat?

I know, it's great, isn't it? I was expecting it to be release a long time ago, ut FFG haven't announced it yet...

Yeah, me too buddy, me too, but there's the new films coming out, and the ships from Rebels

...so it's pretty much up to Disney whether we'll see it now.

We need a DCS: TIE Fighter game and a DCS: X-Wing game that can play online together, featuring the Gunboat for Imperials.

STOP SIR, STOP!

I can only get so erect...

You're obviously not trying... hard... enough.

Then EA needs to lose the contract, as they'll never make a pure flight sim off the old style or galaxies.

Anyway, I crawled out from my rock and found out about Chaos Marines getting Traitor Legions in a supplement. After two horrible core codexes, GW finally listened to Chaos fans.

Maybe FFG might do the same when they run out of ideas after the next movie.

Speaking if GW, I played a bit of THQ's Space Marine tonight. Man, that game was gold. Shame we're unlikely to ever see a sequel.

Need to check out Space Hulk: Deathwing.

18 month design lead time. They're 6 months into Ep 8 ships already.

What if, to avoid spoilers, they give testers the prototypes with code names. What if the code names are XG-1, XG-2, XG-3, and that's why we'll never see gunboats on the table.

I maxed my character out in the first week of that game. I miss Plasma Cannons and how Raptors required intelligence and skill to use with a power sword or chain axe. The amount of Chapter and Legion/Warband love was great, and I miss playing games when you could identify the guy next to you as a Pre-heresy World Eater or a Death Watch member.

It's because they need to maintain the momentum of the new movies to stay Disney relevant, and maintain a narrow minded theme for ship concepts and selling roles.
