XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

We'll see. I still think 2017 will give us plastic SoB.

We should do a bet.

Plastic SoB Range or FFG XG-1 Assault gunboats.

Which will come first?

My money is on the Sisters.

I'm pretty sure you're more likely to see Squats.

Ok so currently I'm thinking of using Ywings with btl-a4 and ion cannon turrets to represent a gunboat. But the pilots are a bit rubbish, except the generics.

If I go scum I can take the R4 agromech which will help with the shooting.

Should I stay away from torps and is Vectored Thrusters wasted on ps2?

I would argue they are less good on PS2s than PS1s but would certainly help make your pseudo gunboats perform as blockers. If you're going with the title then I do think they are worth it, it's not going to be crazily effective either way but it should be fun to fly

Pretty similar to what I feel is he closes "counts-as" Gunboat we've got:

Incidentally, I still think the Y-Wing is the best analogue for the Assault Gunboat currently in the game.

Gold Squadron Pilot - BTL-A4, Ion Cannon Turret, Proton Torpedo, Extra Munitions, Targeting Astromech.

That's about as close in dial, loadout and capabilities as we can currently get.

Edit: Mustn't forget the Guidance Chimps.

Kavil's wasted on this build when it comes to Scum, but Drea might work.

Fanart of a Tie, I found, inspired by the Lambda shuttle, though it kind of looks more like a Tie version of the Gunboat in my mind.

Not sure if hideously ugly or amazing beautiful...

The DX-9, if it is truely canon, would be a nice 'punk the scum tug boat' kind of ship along with gunboats!

It's totally canon as of either the 2014 or 2015 star wars annual. And yes it would. Best for boardings though.

Truth is that I LOVE DROPSHIPS!

My Corvus Blackstar and Storm Raven are two of my favourite things. I am even seriously contemplating getting a Thunderhawk.

I'd love an FFG Sentinel. I also stare at a 1/72 Cheyenne Dropship frequently...

Well if we are stuck with only getting ties I could see myself flying that.

Annual?

As in "yearly book" Incinerator, I think. Used to get a lot of yearly comic compendiums called annuals.

In unrelated news: My eyes, my eyes, dear God my eyes, why animewarsdude why?!

*Disney whispers: that is the new gunboat*

I believe I predicted that tie's existance a hundred pages ago.

Something along the line of "Either it's a 2 person "personal shuttle" by Cygnus or it's a Tie Gunboat by Sienar."

Looks more like a shuttle. Frame leaves much to be desired and the arsenal makes the Opressor look magnificent.

Well to be fair it is just fanart somebody made, but it does look like the gunboat a little bit if it were made into some Tie variant.

It's too busy. There's too much going on there.

I don't think they were able to capture Star Wars aesthetics with that thing.

We still need the assault gunboat. We need to press Disney until we get it.

I do wonder if the Rebels creative team is aware of the Gunboat. They seemed excited to finally have the TIE/D to play with for their show, but they must know there's a lot of other cool fighters out there.

Then again I still find it... curious why the TIE/D is the ONLY starfighter to make it out of TIE Fighter. The Avenger at least appeared as a card in the Decipher card game, but apart from that, only brief mentions. Could there be a legal reason? Totally Games is now defunct but they are the listed developer for the flight simulators.

...Come on dude. Of course they know about the Gunboat.

The TIE/D is just the most iconic- let's not even try to utter the words, "No it's not..!" because it just flat out is. The Gunboat didn't make it into Empire at War: Forces of Corruption, but very well could have filled the exact same role in that game. It didn't make it into cut Battlefront II content either, nor into Battlefront these days.

If we see the Gunboat, we'll be lucky because it's just not terribly well known. We may be a group of fans, but we are definitely small. Thing is, they know where the TIE/D comes from.

So they've flown that wonderful little Gunboat, for sure. They had to've. They know about Dark Troopers, about Data Discs, about all that cool stuff from the 90s Star Wars games.

We may see our Gunboats yet.

Don't underestimate the size of the Gunboat fandom, Captain.

I remember getting dozens of thumbs up and comments from people for the Gunboat shirt at Yavin last year. And I've lost Tracy of the number of times I've heard someone chime in with "I'm just waiting for the Gunboat and Missile Blat" or "I can't believe DFG hasn't released the Gunboat yet" at store tourneys and the like.

Most of the people people I've met who said that don't visit the forum, and were amazed when I showed them this topic.

We may be a vocal minority on the forum, but there's a LOT of fans of the old PC games out there. Many of them bought into this game in the first place due to the thematic connection with the PC games.

Agreed, I did as well hoping for the Gunboat for my Imperials. I went ape s*** over the TIE/ph and TIE/d, but had wondered where my XG-1 Star Wing went.

Welp. Gunboat Vs Plastic Sisters.

Come on FFG. Are you really going to let GW beat you?

I have to agree with Gecko, it is one of the most well known ships on the PC. Unlike the Defender, it was both in the original X-Wing and it's also not considered overpowered. Even after nerfing it for XWA it was still more powerful than any of the Alliance fighters and, is only surpassed in lethality by Missile Boats. With Rebel comparisons and trying to balance Imperial fighters, there is a metric assload of Imperial prototype and special operations craft that you can't balance into most of the games.

I'd say that Dark Troopers are just about as canon as they're going to be at this point with the 'Imperial Sentry Droids' that showed up in Rebels. All that was needed were jet packs and they'd be the perfect Phase II or III.
