It's also worth bearing in mind that 7 dice can easily become 8 or 9 on the right ship/combo of ships.
This isn't Attack Wing.

...thank God
So with the design intent to to being able to 2-shot a 0 agility, no tokens 6 shield 8 hull, how would we redesign it so it threatens to ruin palpshuttles (and gunboat/Bwing/Falcon) days in the normal game, while remaining vulnerable to agility 3 ships?
Someone mentioned a built in Bossk and bossk+ effect. Something like, 4 attack die, defence doubled, May cancel uncanceled successes for 2 damage each and uncanceled crits for 2 critical damage?
And lo....there were 5,000 voices, all clamouring for the Gunboat.
5000 posts is not 5000 voices. This thread is an echo chamber.
I have an idea, but because I'm not bored enough to comb through all 5000 posts, I'll just ask if anyone else has tried it.
The Gunboat is allegedly based on the Lambda. Have there been any custom Lambda refit attempts? Something like this:
Assault Gunboat (modification, Lambda only) "Your upgrade bar gains the (torpedo),(missile) and (bomb) upgrade icons. Treat all turn maneuvers as white maneuvers. You must equip the Ion Cannon Upgrade card, paying the point cost as normal. After you perform an attack with an equipped Ion Cannon upgrade, you may perform a Prumary Weapon attack against the same target."
Gunboat: 10 meters length
Lambada: 20 meters length
It's literally half the size- one 8th the volume and mass of an imperial shuttle.
In order to get an attack to deal damage nowadays, you need to heavily modify it to surpass the token stack of the defending ship. When you attack twice in a row, you have, most of the times, enough modifiers for only one attack.
Granted. But isn't THEIR token stack also usually depleted after the first attack as well?

Well, the first attack would be the cannon one, that is the one that only does something if it lands (tractor, ion, flechette). The defender would use its tokens to defend from it so sometimes it would land and do something plus 1 damage, sometimes it wouldn't.
Then would come the second, primary attack. A 2 dice attack, unmodified, against whatever agility the defender has. At this point it wouldn't be much better than a Snap Shot attack.
Overall, quite underwhelming for being the Gunboat signature shenanigan. In the absolutely best case, it would deal 1 damage from the cannon, plus 2 from the primary. Again, in the absolutely best case.
Most likely, it would fail at doing anything with the cannon against a turtled 2- or 3- agility defender, then fail to do much again with the primary. Perhaps 1 damage overall and a token?
That would put the Gunboat at worse efficiency than an X-Wing or Kihraxz if we are taking about 20-few points for the default configuration.
Of course, I am talking about 2- or 3-agility targets, that aren't so rare in any meta.
It would be better against 0- and 1-agility targets. But even when I think a "elephant hunter" role could be cool for the gunboat, I wouldn't like if it becomes the only role for this ship. The gunboat hunted A-Wings, X-Wing, T-Wings, TIE Defenders, and TIE Avengers in TIE Fighter, by using the tractor beam and missiles or ions. You should be able to equip this ship with that "cheetah hunter" role in mind, even if it cannot do both roles at the same time.
Well, the first attack would be the cannon one
Unless you word the Gunboat's card differently than TIE/D so that you get a free cannon shot after a primary attack.
i.e. Once per round, after you perform an attack with a primary weapon, you may perform an attack with a Cannon secondary weapon.
Also a lack of the 4-point limitation would do a lot to differentiate it from the TIE/D as well.
Edited by DarthEnderXI was thinking on a second title like this:
"Predators' predator"
Assault Gunboat only. Title.
When attacking with a Tractor Beam secondary weapon, the defender's dice cannot be modified.
When attacking with any other secondary weapon, if the defender has a tractor beam token, the defender's dice cannot be modified.
Cost: 5
This would make the ship a great anti ace hunter as long as:
- It has high PS, equips secondary weapons (cannons, missiles) and you have someone else in your squad able to deal tractor beam tokens to aces.
- You bring them in couples.
Broken?
Another possibility is to build the Tractor Beam directly into the title without needing to actually equip a tractor beam by just making it so that any time the Gunboat hits with an attack, you also add a tractor beam token to the target.
Although...I feel like that would be an upgrade better suited to the Missile Boat...
Edited by DarthEnderXTo make the gunboat fans happy, just give it a title that says that " regardless of die results, you always score at least one hit on your target. You may not be assigned any damage cards if they would destroy this ship. "
To make the Gunboat fans happy (and 95% of the other players in the game), just RELEASE THE GODDAMN SHIP.
It could have the stats of a damaged engine Binayre Pilot for all I care, I just want it in the game already.
Modification
XG-1 Alpha Class Assault Gunboat only
Glorious Gunboat Galore
Before revealing your list to your opponent ask him wether he likes the gunboat. If his answer is negative you may field an additional GUNBOAT anywhere in the play area.

I don't always visit community.fantasyflightgames.com
But when I do, I click on XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat to see if it's been released yet.
Now someone can put the above in a "I don't always" meme generator and upload a picture of it to this thread.
bump . . . I really want this ship and it's sister ship the missile boat.
I think we're just going to have to use homebrew gunboats until popularity spreads.
Rebels seem to be featuring the TIE Defender soon. That ship was originated in the same videogame series as the gunboat.
The Defender in a pre-Yavin time line? That's crazy talk!
I'm a little miffed about it for several reasons, though I love the Defender and support it's reinclusion back into canon. Pertaining to the Gunboat, the XG-1 was designed to be the first fighter the rebellion faced with Shields and hyperdrive. The TIE Defender will beat it out.
The Gunboat can still exist in canon since it's not a TIE Design, and the TIE/D is noteworthy for being a TIE Design with both, but this may effectively kill off the TIE Avenger, which would have also been a better pick.
Edited by NorsehoundWell according to new cannon defenders were at the death star, New cannon sucks long live the EU!
GUNBOAT only title: Plot armour? What plot armour?
Following an attack by this ship on an enemy ship that has an ion token and a damage card, destroy target enemy ship.
Maybe this should be Maarek Stele only as well?

As far as I'm concerned, the Imperial arms race and Admiral Zaarin are one of the best stories in the EU.
And certainly the best videogame EU story ever told.
I didn't know Tabletop Simulator supported this ship. Not my favorite stats, but pleasantly surprised!

Really? What source?
