An interesting way to do it would be to have 3 dual cards - ion/flechette, ion/tractor, flechette/tractor, each of which does the relevant thing (stress, ion or tractor token) on a hit in addition to primary weapon damage, and each of which you can set which face is up at setup. Sort of pseudo-side-boarding the three cheap cannons.
XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread
You know something occurred to me this morning.
The very best Star Wars games of the bunch don't involve jedi, or directly playing a jedi, or at the least you don't have to.
Dark Forces 1, X-wing, TIE Fighter, Republic Commando, Force commander...
Jedi knight, Academy and outcast are the only real outliers.
EVEN Battlefront 1 is the better battlefront, and you can't play the heroes.
Knights of the Old Republic should be included in that statement, and you definitely play a Jedi there. Eventually.

I don't think Jedi Knight is even good.
Dark Forces was a really good Doom clone. But Jedi Knight was a kind of *****y Quake clone. And then Outcast was totally awesome.
Edited by DarthEnderXDang! Not remotely useful. Dual cards don't set what side is face up until the fight starts, so you wouldn't have the cannon slot until well after you could pay to equip one.
JK had a lot going for it for the time. Was WAY WAY more than just quake, lots more mechanically.

Thats still the single most beautiful Gunboat model in the universe!
That is a pretty sweet shapeways model. What's the difference between Ultra Detail and Extreme Detail?
How's the scale for this version? Is it right?
XG-1 Assault Gunboat Classic Variant
WIDTH
3.454 cm
HEIGHT
5.104 cm
DEPTH
3.476 cm
So 4960 posts here. Has anyone put this up?:

Praise be to Fly Casual! (it's mentioned on the first page).
Also, if I was picking up a printed version, I'd go Gosric (it has the folding wings).

It's even more ultra!
Internet did things...
Edited by RogueLeader42Extreme detail is better, and apparently less brittle than FUD.
None. It's missing a cannon slot, which is essential for depicting the gunboat. Your integrated Ions just aren't the same. It's essential because I wanted to use gunboats as slow cheap HLC carriers without dropping 30 points for them. Though I've been away from the game for a while, it still doesn't look like the Empire doesn't have something that does this. It's still the Firespray and TIE Defender isn't it?
I feel Gunboats should lean more on cannon upgrades than ordnance for that reason. We have TIE Bombers and TIE Punishers for massed missiles and bombs. The Defender is the only small cannon ship for the Empire, and it's kind of fragile for it's cost. I'd like to take Gunboats to crawl in on a flank and blast ships with HLCs like B-Wings were doing back in the beginning.
Our experience with the Custom Cards League 1 showed the Gunboat is too powerful with the cannon slot.
Howso? I would have thought the shift in reliance to more green dice over hull/shields would make them more vulnerable than shuttles.
I for one cannot imagine the Gunboat without a cannon slot. It's like making X-Wings and Y-Wings without astromech slots. You can't trade away a fundamental aspect of the fighter, especially if there's precedent with the Defender having one.

I'm fixing it. Will post soon the revised version.
As you can probably tell by the number of pages in the topic, there's been a hell of a lot of discussion on the Gunboat's stats and profile over the last couple of years.
The consensus was that although the Gunboat needs it's Ion Cannons if it's going to fill it's traditional role of being a multi-purpose starfighter, being able to equip a HLC actualy moved it away from that territory.
Hence a lot of theorycrafting went into giving the ship bonuses when using ion cannons or ordnance.
You can find a good number of the community's ideas on page one.
Edit: You'll also note that although the TIE Defenders did indeed come with the cannon slot, the fixes which were released for them - namely the TIE/x7 and TIE/D title cards - actually moved them away from HLC builds, and more into their canon role. In fact, if you equip a HLC on a Defender nowadays, you won't be getting any benefit from either title.
Essentially we were advocating a mechanic similar to the TIE/D title before the TIE/D title even existed.
Edited by FTS GeckoThats why I would prefer something like the Misthunter title as it specifies which cannon can be used.
Make it
"You equipp a Tractor Bekam or Ion Cannon upgrade card.
You may perform a secondary attack prior to your primary attack."
And I'm pretty sure exactly this was allready posted some time ago ![]()
What about now?

a mango equipped gunboat with the same health as a bwing should not be more swarmable than naked bwings. 17 points base with a canon slot lets you swarm ions but not mangos, while still letting mango boats be cheaper and more effective than naked blue squadrons.
Just thought I'd say Odanan, not overly keen on Noble Calder's pilot ability. It seems way to similar to Garven Dreis, maybe if it was changed to "When you perform a Focus action, you may assign the Focus token to another friendly ship at range 1-2". Although that sounds far too selfless for an Imperial pilot.
Xeal's pilot ability is spot on, though.
Alpha Strike and Advanced Hyperdrive are two of the most overpowered custom cards I've ever seen, especially in combination. Does anyone else think a double-tap effect should cost more than 1 point? What about giving a ship with that kind of offense the ability to deploy after the game started? Advanced Hyperdrive goves the ship a round it can't be attacked by anything else (because it's not in the play area), and then the controlling player gets to react to the opponent's deplyment and first round of movement for just 2 points without a drawback.
The dial and the other upgrades make sense. Point costs for the ships might be a couple points low. I love the full spread of pilot options; although some of the abilities look more Rebel than Imperial.
Yeah, Tomax Bren would absolutely devour Alpha Strike as long as he had enough warheads that didn't spend a TL or required a Focus instead.
Advanced Hyperdrive seems a bit more balanced if only because you're giving up a valuable System slot in order to essentially finally introduce a true cloaking device into the game for one turn. Would be a painful thing to have a TIE Phantom pop in at range 2 out of arc of some of your squishier ships.
Incidentally, I still think the Y-Wing is the best analogue for the Assault Gunboat currently in the game.
Gold Squadron Pilot - BTL-A4, Ion Cannon Turret, Proton Torpedo, Extra Munitions, Targeting Astromech.
That's about as close in dial, loadout and capabilities as we can currently get.
Edit: Mustn't forget the Guidance Chimps.
