XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

a YT-1300 that has an offset cockpit

Just wanted to point out that this particular point really isn't one to hang your hat on. The offset cockpit has literally never been an issue with the Falcon. I'm pretty sure you never see the rest of the ship from inside the cockpit and it's just another inconsistency between the internal and external Falcon parts. As far as the people inside the Falcon are concerned, it's just a cockpit, a short corridor, and a ladder with guns at the top and bottom.

...You do know it has a pretty important impact on your perspective when flying it right?

Like.

We're talking severe when it comes to small adjustments.

Realistically and conceptually yes, I recognize how much it'll really mess up your piloting. The B-wing would have the same issue.

In the Star Wars movies, as far as the pilot is concerned, there is nothing except the cockpit, a corridor, and guns. There is most certainly not 98% of the ship off to the cockpit's left, neither visibly nor physically in any way. It just wasn't addressed at all so there is nothing to show us that the offset cockpit has any effect at all.

only a fool [snip] Or a Gunboat hater...

Are they not the same thing?

Would you be happy or sad if the Gunboat would be introduced to Armada first?

All gunboat haters are fools, but not all fools are gunboat haters.

This is true. I am a fool and I love the Gunboat.

And that right there is the problem.

It might be in the novelization, sure, but that's not in the movie. Absolutely no movie-goer who's not read the book (and why would they before seeing the film?) has any clue that Rey has any idea how to do anything vehicle related other than fly a speeder around.

For decades, Star Wars has been about far more than just what's in the movies!!

As a 23 year old Star Wars fan who grew up playing Dark Forces and various Lucasarts titles, you definitely don't have to tell me that.

But the important part is, this is all valuable information that the movie utterly fails to tell us so that we may more effectively suspend our disbelief. Without knowing Rey is familiar with these things, the average viewer would call BS on her actions.

If they weren't afraid of being called misogynists, anyway.

Point is, Rey knows how to do that stuff- okay, that's fine. It was still her first time flying a YT-1300 that has an offset cockpit- flying it for real, in an extremely tense life or death situation... and without reading the novelization of the film which absolutely most people would never bother reading, even less buying, the viewer can not know that.

I knew that! But I still call BS, because that information should be in the film.

We got it with Luke. Why not Rey? Should we not hold the new films and characters to the standards of the Original Trilogy, and not the Prequel Trilogy? As much as I love the latter, it is not the standard I would measure any Star Wars media buy. Because Annie did it does not make it okay. That too, was BS.

Did you miss the parts where she rams the ship into the ground, knocks over the gate, and then skids it across the dessert for half the scene? She knows how to fly, but clearly was no master pilot since in addition to all her crashing, she was also hit multiple times.

Achievements during the escape:

Rey doesn't crash inside the Star Destroyer

Rey pulls of an Sloop.

Finn shoots down two TIEs.

The Falcon is the Mary Sue for not flipping over when she rams the cockpit into the ground not her for surviving five minutes.

Would you be happy or sad if the Gunboat would be introduced to Armada first?

I know it's from a dogfighting game, but to me it and the TIE Bomber are more at home in Armada.

Kind of. The Gunboats multi-role capabilities qualifies it for any tactical situation. The Tie Bombers role is more specific.

I am not familiar with how those Objective things work in Armada, but the Gunboat was mostly used for getting stuff done, not for wasting time with pointless dogfighting.

If they needed some pirate ship captured, or some freighters disabled, or to scare away some evildoers in remote customs stations, they sent the gunboats, did the job, and went back home. For who-has-the-longest-laser competitions they sent the TIEs onboard a huge compensating carrier ship.

I could think that they would be even more appropriate in Armada than in X-Wing if Armada battles need stuff done quickly and efficiently.

It would be awesome to see the Gunboat in Armada, X-Wing, and ideally, both. I wouldn't mind if they added it to Armada first...seems like it could do some good work there.

Hmm, what would an Armada Gunboat have? I'm thinking escort and grit. Always seemed like they were more than willing to beeline straight towards their target without giving 2 fluffs about you unless you started doing serious damage. They also always seemed to pop a missile at you while you were chasing a vital target like a troop transport or bomber. Even with torps I wouldn't call it a dedicated bomber like the Bomber and Defender are so maybe a blue die for anti-cap? What would be a good anti-fighter roll for it?

I'd say 2-3 blue for AS, but what about throwing in maybe 2 blue 1 red?

Well gunboats could carry heavy rockets and bombs in tie fighter, dont see why they'd only be as effective as a tie.

Honestly I haven't played enough of Armada to theorycraft the XG-1 for it, would definitely be interested in what people thought though

Stop putting Maarek in that turdwagon!

As pretty as it is when painted red and white it was a nightmare to fly. It felt like Han's cargo barge from TFA would be easier to maneuver.

I genuinely preferred flying the unupgraded TIE fighter.

Stop putting Maarek in that turdwagon!

He flew it more than any other ship.

Maarek gets to fly everything.

He's the Imperial version of Sabine Wren.

You're not even wrong. :P

Don't insult Steele by comparing her to him.

It's mire of a compliment than an insult; Sabine's clearly a Stele impersonator

Sabine Wren as the PC in X-Wing (video game) remake confirmed.
