XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

THAT'S A GOAT HOT DOG.

Nope, it's a goat piloting a BUNBOAT with ketchup and mustard.

#goatboatisop

All hail the GUNBOAT!

And of course the mighty GLOW-CLOUD. Otherwise it would rain dead animals in us.

It all started like this: Original gunboat 3D model.

And some dare to say this doesn't look Imperial...

It looks fuzzy, like a peach. A five-winged fuzzy purple peach.

I was into the the Bungoat before it was cool.

Fine you can have the title hipster and the modification pork pie hat, you have to supply your own ugly glasses.

I'll be a heretic. Never liked the Gunboat. There, I said it. I didn't like it when it it was in the original TIE fighter game and don;t like it now. I always felt it was intended to fill an operational role for the Imperials, rather than grow organically from an Imperial aesthetic. yeah, I know, it resembles the Lambda shuttle. but or me, that makes as much sense as a smaller assault craft resembling a C-130. I've always preferred the TIE-based starfighters.

Having said that, I would not be upset if they arrived. I might not buy one, though, as to me, they just feel "wrong." But that's just a personal opinion. It looks like lots of folks here love it, and, hey, I'm all about personal preference.

That's okay, it's a free country; you're allowed to be wrong. ;)

Three honest questions:

- Do you think the Gunboat would be "wronger" than any other controversial ship released for this game? Like the TIE Punisher, the Raider, the K-Wing, half of the ships in Scum, the E-Wing, the several clones of TIE Fighters?

- Do you think the Empire should look like a realistic military organization, or more like a cartoony evil organization?

- Why?

The Gunboat threadmaker challenged his fellow posters with this question. Did FFG create everything that exists? A poster bravely replied, "Yes, they did!"

"FFG created everything?" The threadmaker asked.

"Yes sir", the poster replied.

The threadmaker answered, "If FFG created everything, then FFG created the TIE Punisher since the TIE Punisher exists, and according to the principle that our works define who we are then FFG is stupid. The Gunboat is a better choice". The poster became quiet before such an answer. The threadmaker was quite pleased with himself and boasted to the posters that he had proven once more that the inclusion of the TIE Punisher over the Gunboat was a grievous error.

Another poster raised his hand and said, "Can I ask you a question threadmaker?"

"Of course", replied the threadmaker.

The poster stood up and asked, "Threadmaker, should the Gunboat be released?"

"What kind of question is this? Of course it should be released. Have you never played TIE Fighter?" The posters snickered at the young poster's question.

The young poster replied, "In fact sir, the Gunboat should not be released. According to the laws of Canon, what we consider the Gunboat is in reality only Legends. Every imperial ship is susceptible to discussion when it has existed in Star Wars, but the imperial aesthetic is what makes a ship more likely to be released. The Gunboat does not possess this. We have created this desire for it to be released to display how we feel if we don’t like what FFG releases."

The poster continued, "Threadmaker, should the DX-9 be included?"

The threadmaker responded, "Of course it should."

The poster replied, "Once again you are wrong sir, the DX-9 should not be released either. The DX-9 would bring unnecessary mechanics such as boarding or double systems slots. System slots we can use, but not boarding. How can you know how useful a certain mechanic is? You imagine how thematic it would be in the context of a dogfight. Isn't this correct? Dead on Arrival is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no usefulness to a ship when it is released."

Finally the young man asked the threadmaker, "Sir, is the TIE Punisher stupid?"

Now uncertain, the threadmaker responded, "Of course as I have already said. We see it every day. It is in the daily example of it’s useless role in the meta. It is in the multitude of ordnance pods on it’s frame. These manifestations are nothing else but stupid."

To this the poster replied, "The TIE Punisher is not stupid sir, or at least it not stupid unto itself. The TIE Punisher is simply the product of LucasArts. It is just like the Gunboat and DX-9, a ship that man has created in the absence of FFG. FFG did not create the TIE Punisher. The TIE Punisher is not like the Raider that is canon just as the T-65 and TIE Fighter are. The TIE Punisher is the result of what happens when man does not have FFG's love present in his heart. It's like the Gunboat that comes when there is no aesthetic sense to it or the DX-9 that comes when there is no need for the mechanics it would bring."

The threadmaker stopped posting.

The young poster's name? Albert Einstein!

I am not fond of your trolling stance, but I will give you the benefit of doubt and discuss one of your lines.

but the imperial aesthetic is what makes a ship more likely to be released. The Gunboat does not possess this.

The gunboat shares aesthetics with the lambda shuttle. Isn't the shuttle aesthetically imperial to your taste?

The storm trooper helmet is overly imperial, aesthetically talking, but a star fighter in the same shape (or a mini star destroyer)... wouldn't be so much.
The same with a small ship rebel bomber in the shape of a mini rebel transport.

Aesthetically the Lambda is my favorite FFG model, stark white with bold black lines. Certain renders of the gunboat are quite nice looking as well but I think it suffers from EUitis much like the YT-2400 or E wing. Discount versions of the original designs that I'd have drawn back in elementary school or you'd find on deviantart with 'OC do not steal' plastered on it.

I suppose the Imperial design aesthetic is Cheap Shieldless Swarms. Let's list the ships that do NOT follow this:

TIE Advanced and TAP

Punisher

Defender

Phantom

Hmm, half the starfighters available!

Or were you just talking about looks?

But all ties all the time isn't?

I won't disagree that TIE do the exact same thing. Star Wars in general has long suffered from a lack of good original design.

Purely aesthetic, I won't delve into design mantra.

My new headcannon is that the the Punisher and Gunboat were both developed to fill the same role and in the best timeline Cygnus beat out Sienar. So much so that they were also awarded the Missileboat contract when they needed another TIE killer.

Imperial ships that don't 'fit' the aesthetic (I.e. non-TIEs):

I-7 Howlrunner

A-9 Vigilance

Xg-1 GUNBOAT

xm-1 Missile Boat

And everything from Clone Wars, except the Eta-2.

Dig deep enough and you can find many more.

Oh, and I don't know if anyone ever noticed or cared but TIE designs always kept their weapons on the fuselage instead of the wings UNTIL the Interceptor added pointy guns on pointy wings. Even the TAP and Striker follow the old weapons Loadout. And the Interceptor (to me) was a very lazy design. If they could just add more guns on a TIE Fighter then WHY DIDNT THEY DO THAT IN THE OTHER MOVIES???? Oh well.

And the Phantom still looks like they stuck together some Legos, the Falcons cockpit and 3/4ths of an interceptor's wings to make an obvious Ugly Design that would fit in with the Scum faction of it was painted purple and pea green.

Two things stand out as shocking to me there:

1. All those non-TIE ships have yet to be released and are all EU sans the broad Clone wars designation

2. What you find aesthetically pleasing is different from what I find aesthetically pleasing.

I need to think on this revelation.

RE the DX-9: I just use my model with the shuttle dial/cards/rules where i feel the mission should have more of that vibe. No different from my Escort shuttle / firespray. I don't do official events so...

I just think it should be a tanky heavily armed yet quite slow ship if it ever got it's own rules. It wouldn't really add anything super special though except either boarding or dropping space mines.

RE The XG-1.

I've said it before, really it's one of the ships from that era (along with the Avenger and DX-9) (and R-41 and BFF-1) It does look like they (Disney I guess) are moving away from that era, which is a shame but hey ho.

I do think we'll see the gunboat in game officially at some point. Because it does have a certain fanbase.
