That's awesome.
I think it's fair to say that as of this date Elite Dangerous should be considered the benchmark space game in turns of graphics and gameplay.
For IP worth however it doesn't even ticke Star Wars.

Indeed. Put Star Wars skins on the Elite: Dangerous models, Star Wars branding on the box, adjust the flight mechanics slightly and it's sales figures would be over 50 times what they currently are. And that's a conservative estimate.
Elite would need a lot more than just a reskin.
I like a whole bunch of things about it, it's beautiful, the stations etc are great. I actually kinda like the flight mechanics.
But I want battles, tactical combat. I want to escort that troop transport to that base. Hell, we all know that I quite unreasonably want to be leading those troops storming and securing that station.
Flying around hunting nobodies, fighting small skirmishes and trading isn't enough for me. It never was.
Edited by DariusAPBFlying wingman for Lord Vader rescuing the Emperor. In mutha fuqin TIE Defenders!
When your reskin can do that give me a call.

If I could make you feel the frustrated headache that line just gave me I would.
What if we had a game that could do that **** WITHOUT scripting?
Scripting is the easy option for one off battles or duplicated all too similar stuff.
What if a player was an Imperial Commander and assigned directives to AI ships, and player ships/fighters could assist?
It's like No Mans Sky.
Huge universe. As a player you make no difference. It's elite 2 Frontier, or it's Daggerfall. Both games from the early to mid 90s.
No, I want to conquer, save, exterminate, rescue. A sandbox where your sand castles aren't visible to others.... what's the point?
PC Gaming has come so far ahead graphically, but in terms of gameplay we may as well be in the year 2000.
If you just want scripting... just take XvT and put newer graphics on it.
Edited by DariusAPBNo Man's Sky and Elite Dangerous are enough evidence to me that there's demand for more flight sims. LucasArts itself had to deal with Lucas never liking video games, and the IP suffered from lack of company support for developers and superficial interest because Lucas didn't want anything other than PT material. The problem with company's like EA on the other hand, is that they bleed money making games for bad return values, simply because their umbrella developers are burnt out and rushed resulting in poorer sales and negative feedback (Bioware, Visceral, etc). Which is what happens when they ruin the franchise by trying to copy COD and WOW, and as a result are dumping titles out and continually over hype their games by dumping more money into multiplayer and advertising.
I like Elite Dangerous, but I seriously hate landing in that game. The controls are fine on the console, but I've been on a Fallout 4 binge because someone released NMS foliage mods and I'm too busy playing with power armor paint schemes. Plus Nuka World is out on the 30th, despite the fact we all know it will not take long to beat.
Nuke world looks so good can't wait for it myself.
I just realized something, that pertains to the Gunboat.
If FFG does bring it in, it would be akin to saying that with enough comments and posts you could pressure the company into making a particular product. While this seems a nice enough idea, what would it mean in terms of community reaction?
Would we then see dozens of smaller topics, all focused on wooing the designers to make this ship or that? Would we hear the argument, "But they made the Gunboat; why not this?"
A good friend of mine who majored in advertising gave me advice to this end: if you give them an inch, they will demand a mile - and they will despise you for not giving that mile. So even if they wanted to, would FFG actually be able make the Gunboat without drawing all sorts of undesired consequence?

Oh come on Darius, whoever said JUST scripting?
If you want a good sandbox universe AND a cohesive single player story stroke narrative campaign, you're going to need both. Procedurally generated content, missions and encounters PLUS an ongoing, immersive story. And the ability to duck into or out of each at a moments notice.
Think of a combination of Elite's sandbox universe, Red Dead Redemption or GTA IV's multiple narrative stories and side quests combined with full mission based campaigns like in X-Wing, TIE Fighter or X-Wing Alliance.
A persistent galaxy sandbox MMO with player rank progression and the ability to organise anything from patrols to convoys to invasion fleets would be absolutely incredible - and you'd need to take multiple approaches to creating and managing events in order to achieve it.
Interesting point, they did make the ARC...

Eh I dunno, scripting should always be used to a minimum. I cite Starshatter2 as my example. Set scenarios, not much scripting. Covers fighter combat to carrier command.

You're overthinking it. If FFG decide to release the Gunboat, and if Disney approve the release, it would have nothing to do with fan discussion or speculation on the subject. At all.
There was a similar thread speculating on Imperial Epic ships, which went for over 100 pages as well, and one of the main contenders was the Gozanti. That certainly didn't stop FFG from bringing out the Gozanti, and it didn;t impact their release process going forward either.
Your good friend in advertising would be correct IF FFG acknowledged the various speculation threads (not just this one) in the community and actively commented on them. They don't, and they don't.
FFG will do what FFG will do. And we'll continue to speculate, just like we alwas have done.

Tell me in what business scenario it isn't good to sell a product that people want to buy and you can easily produce. Any decent company will be aware of the consumer's desires.
We are not asking for a ridiculous (like space whales) or unrealistic (like a Star Destroyer) product , we are asking for a ship, just like any other there is in the game.
It's simple: give us an inch, FFG, and we will buy miles.
Plus that analysis doesn't taking into account Star Wars' canon/non-canon maze, or the fact that FFG are operating under license.
Put it this way, if the Gunboat appears in Rogue One, or Rebels, or in a Disney-licensed video game, then it's pretty much nailed that FFG will produce it.
Plus, FFG have ALREADY released the Gunboat under approval from Disney, just not in X-Wing (yet). The Gunboat appeared last year in the Edge of the Empire sourcebook Fly Casual - that's where the lovely art work that appeared in Crabbok's video came from. Also appearing in that supplement was the Interdictor Cruiser, which has since been canonized in Rebels and released in Armada (where it's release had been speculated upon almost as much as the Gunboat has here).
So, we're really not even looking for anything new here; we just want FFG to show X-Wing players some of the love they've shown the RPG players! ![]()

They do what they think it's best for the game. Eventually, they will realize that releasing the Gunboat is a good thing.
And come on! Do you really think the devs don't read these forums? It's their job! They will be closely watching the meta, the wants and needs of the community.
I have to wonder if they're waiting to see if the Gunboat gets canonized in Rebels and gives them some ready-made pilot options for it. Which is very possible, Filoni is clearly a fan of old EU stuff.

We're also not asking for another Tie Fighter...
Wasn't Imperial Veterans something that was like really really close to some suggestion posted in this forum? I certainly remember someone quoting his own post to compare it with the official contents when that expansion was announced last year.
The double tap mechanic with ion cannon and primary for the Defender was something discussed and requested in these forums for years. That didn't keep FFG from producing and releasing what was virtually exactly that in the form of the TIE/D title.
This Gunboat thread was close to 100 pages already when they decided to release the TIE Punisher: a ship few knew about, that nobody requested, few liked, and even fewer actually use.
They don't seem to care at all about what some people want request, want, or propose. If they like an idea, they might take it. Otherwise, they are the designers and I bet they take pride on their work. Probably they don't want to feel constricted by anyone's expectations of what should come next, or in which shape, (other than their bosses', of course). Davy said in an interview that he was (not his words) sick of making TIE Fighters. So I guess if we keep being force-fed with TIE Fighters is because the designers are forced to add them to the game by someone over their payroll.
I totally understand that, having already someone forcing them to make particular ships, they don't want any more people telling them to do this or that ship.
I wish they made the Gunboat. But I rather have them make it by their own will and with their own fresh ideas, rather than feeling forced by the community, and so, making it while grinding their teeth.
I would't want it to become another TIE/SF, to name an example, where a certain "designer exhaustion" is apparent, at least to my eyes.

That was me. Here are the custom cards I made about 5 months before the announcement of Imperial Vets. It's probably just coincidence, but let me dream I inspired the devs somehow...
Interesting point, they did make the ARC...

I take pride in not frivolously spending my money on products like a lot of whale gamers do. They can grind their teeth all they want, they still need to do more than release ships.
Also, a minority of people actually wanted the /sf. TFA fans don't care for TFA ships, because they're not appealing or original. What people wanted was an update and upgrade to existing ships that are actually needed because they barely fit existing niches with most of the meta gens to begin with.
I would argue that a minority of people wanted the /fo because everyone thought the /sf was cooler.

No argument, but I would have preferred if Lucisney made an upgrade to the Interceptor, not line fighter. Nostalgia and fanservicing doesn't take into account military logistics and competency in the SWverse apparently.
