Get a wired 360 controller.
That way you can have dice mods when stressed and fire out of arc.
Oh wait...

You sure? It's not even a Joystick.
I might be able to just borrow one of those though...

If you're a purist, then I guess you'd want a flight stick, but frankly, a good analog stick controller is almost as good, and is actually good for a bazillion other things that AREN'T flight sims as well. You sure? It's not even a Joystick.

yea, BF2 might be more fun with a controller as well.

I find impossible to play simulators (and FPS games) with console controllers. But hey, I'm a PC guy.
So, you guys are my TIE Fighter Players. I'm seriously considering getting it, but I need a Joystick. What Brands would you guys recommend? preferably under 50 bucks. I mean I still need to get Imperial Veterans to!
The most important thing you need to accept is that you won't be able to put all your controls on a joystick's buttons. Not even a HOTAS will give you enough controls; the X-wing/TIE series is infamous that way. (Incidentally, I still have muscle memory for almost all the controls on the keyboard.)
Logitech Extreme 3D Pro has a good reputation, and for good reason - they're sturdy with lots of buttons, though I did manage to kill a couple of them flying in SWG. (I was hard on sticks.) Cheaper Logitech/Saitek/Thrustmaster sticks will also do you pretty well. Twist handle/rudder control is unimportant unless you're playing X-wing Alliance, as none of the earlier games supported a fourth axis. My wife liked her Thrustmaster T-16000M flight stick. If you do want to go the HOTAS route, you can pick up a used Saitek X45 on eBay fairly reasonably. (It's still my favorite stick for combat flight. I've got a newer X52 Pro here, too, but the I prefer the 45's rocker over the 52's twist handle.)
I still think the tie striker is fugly but at least it's different.
Even less original than TIE Raptors. Hell, slapping rocket pods on TIEs was more forthcoming in XWA, or TIE Hunters in RS3. Or TIE GTs and Scimitar Bombers in the old RPG books.
I'm finally getting around to my GSW TIE Bomber Flight. Just waiting for the cards and the last bomber to arrive in the mail. Then I need to find a painter because I can't paint for ****.
No one can paint at first you get good by practicing, vehicles are easy if you want to get good paint infantry with pouches and different textures to the clothes.
Also get good brushes because cheap ones loose their point quickly and make detail painting hell.
I understand that. I'll rephrase my choice of words; that I do not enjoy the limited time off painting or really assembling anymore. Working two jobs numbs that.

The old PC controller was my joystick for XWA. It wasn't good in hindsight, but I was youngish back then. Boy do I miss watching mk V experimental flies run loops everywhere.
Get a Steam Controller.

[Emphasis mine]
I seem to remember reading (somewhere, it may have even been in this thread) that that was a deliberate choice. The devs wanted to simulate certain aspects of actually flying a starfighter. Presumably they saw the large number of buttons in the X-Wing cockpit and went with it.
Makes me feel better, at least, about not being able to bind most of my joystick buttons in the 1994 editions without an external programme xD
(Should do that at some point. Having even just four more buttons can be so handy in combat. Especially with ships like the Gunboat that can live or die by quick ELS management and shield redirection)
Edited by KtanGet a f**king joystick.
If you are playing the x-wing series do it right.
For all other games, the 360 controller does it.
Does it well.
Yeah you don't need a top end joystick to enjoy tie fighter.
Entry level logitech or preferably Thrustmaster will do the job just fine.
Getting closer and closer to 200 pages, pretty soon FFG will not be able to ignore this thread, either that or by wave 300, there is still no Gunboat and the Internet has collapsed under the weight of this topic.
Social anarchy, end of civilisation and FFG announces wave 301
Pink tie Defender( Rebels, piloted by Sabine)
Super duper special forces Tie( with extra antenna)
Scum Epic, garbage trawler ( The rusty bullethole)
One step closer to 200, no it's okay no need to thank me
All pink ships will be piloted by Char Aznable, the Red Comet, for the glory of Zeon.
I think I played tie fighter with a simple two axis two button stick that cost all of five dollars new. You need the stick.
Get a wired 360 controller.
That's what I'm using for S-Wing Alliance. Having all those buttons available to map commands to is quite useful as well.
Edited by FTS GeckoI just downloaded tie fighter from GoG (good ol games) just to relive the glory. That game is still awesome. I dont know what "used" stuff u have where u live (craigslist??), but i went on kijiji and bought a logitech 3d joystick that had only been used once for like $10. Apparently thrift stores and value village also carry stuff like this too.

I played Tie Fighter on this beauty.
It's yuge.
It's beautiful.
It's beautiful.
Yeah, the same way the Gunboat is beautiful...
