Remaining in Careers

By DrWorm73, in WFRP House Rules

We are having a bit of a debate within our group about characters not advancing out of a career. By the rules once you have spent your 4 fixed advances and 6 open advances on career advances you can get your dedication bonus and then it is essentially time to choose a new career, but this is a bit troublesome. First of all if you raise an attribute to say 5, then you have taken up almost all of your open slots already, so there is little left career related stuff to take, which we are probably going to house-rule as not counting towards advancement.

The other issue is that some career paths are very limited in their options and are pretty short. The real example we are running up against is our witch who has just become a Warlock because he has a very specific talent slot that he looses if he ever transfers out of that career. Eventually he will get to the point that he has nowhere to advance to.

What kind of house rules have people used in these kinds of circumstances?

So, you allow a person to buy a talent slot as an advance? Is it considered on-career or off?

Yes.

It works "as usual"; As an example if you have a reputation slot, a reputation talent is considered a career advance, so an extra reputation slot would be considered a career advance.

I only allow players one extra slot of each type, it helps with the issue that talents can become obsolete if you move into a career which do not have talent slots you had in previous careers.

We allow characters to retake careers (if there is no "master" career listed.). This eliminates the need for endless piles of career sheets.

I would definitely allow the Warlock to do the "Master Warlock" or "Warlock Lord" thing just as a wizard does and/or allow them to keep their talent slot. It would be silly for them to lose it because the game didn't have a upper rank career.

Good thoughts. I will don't have Winds of Magic so I am not really familiar with the advanced Wizard careers mechanically, but I will present these approaches to see what the group wants to do. That is, if I don't kill him first. I am all for people playing their characters accurately, but so much of the stufff that career does screws over all of us so often that my character might start to take it personally. ;)

Hi DrWorm73,

In my signature look at the link "The Dark Side", there are some careers for warlocks I created some time ago. They may serve you for inspiration.

Amusingly enough one of my players sent those careers to me in an email but he couldn't find the source file on is phone. So thanks for that.

I have allowed pc to become veterans at their career (retaking it) also if a pc want to up a stat they are allowed to do this over the course of their career paths...the last career being the deciding career regarding attribute (ie +1 or +2 if noncareer)

Like I said, I see no great reason to make the taking of attribute increases count as advances towards career completion as it is, so I doubt we are going to use that RAW.
