WH 40k and DH inspired glasses

By ShadowKat2, in Fan Art

I came up with the idea to etch some 19 oz. pub glasses as a surprise for my husband's recent birthday.

Each glass bares the imperial aquila on one side and a DH/WH 40k inspired icon on the other. I hand etched the glasses with a pen-etching tool after first having to freehand create/ink the images on the surfaces. A few hand cramps later (and many, many fingerprints that I had to srub off) I was able to wrap and present them to him. He was thrilled happy.gif and suggested that I share the results here:

It was a really fun project and being my first attempt at etching I was happy with the results. I wouldn't mind doing a few more (a SM legions set would be fun!). I will be sure to post up more if I do!

I'd be thrilled as well if I received such a set of glasses. Very nicely done, especially for a first attempt.

Those look incredibly good. Incredibly incredibly good.

Can't believe that should be an first attempt...

I mean, I believe you, but I am amazed

And a really nice gift, must have made him very happy.

They're awesome.

Thought about taking commissions for selling them?

Actually, I wouldn't mind taking commissions for personalized glasses like these.

It was a fun project, and he has really enjoyed them (I find myself washing them constaintly!). Thinking of doing something for myself as well, maybe a coffee/tea cup! We shall see....

contact me @ [email protected] i'd like to have some awesome things like these :)

i dunno if they would be covered by some sort of copyright , that states your not allowed to sell them or GW will eat your soul.

not to stop the fun, but rather to maybe prevent things becoming big troble, but i do not your local copyright laws.

She'd be able to get away with private commissions etching things like these glasses, at least in the US. She would technically be hired to preform a service, not selling a copyrighted image. The client, how ever could get in trouble if they attempted to then sell the glasses as it would then be making money off of the copyright. Technically, an artist can be hired by a client to make a duplicate painting, a picture of spider-man and bat-man saving the client, or just about anything else as long as the images themselves are not used to generate any revenue. Such commissions have been the cornerstone of many illustrators and artists incomes for quite some time.

Oh, and they are some really cool glasses as well! :D

... I have to say. I'm jealous as all unholy chaos infested hell right now. Shot glasses could be fun, put the original legions on 'em and try to stay standing after doing a shot from each legion. babeo.gif

GW's official policy is to not allow this as someone else is making money out of thier IP but they dont really enforce it. They ban tattoos of thier IP on the same principle. Its all shown in this link ( www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp ) but the relivant part is down near the bottom labeled T-shirts, Clothes, Tatoos and the Like . You should note that that list isn't exhaustive so there is no point trying to look for gaps or loopholes.

Anyway it should probably be fine as long as you dont try and make a buisiness out of it.

Also great work on the glass's.

I was thinking the same thing. A shot glass with the Chaos undivided symbol in the bottom. Indicating that when you see the drink through only Chaos will remain. cool.gif

ShadowKat: I dont think im familiar with the etching of glass. How does it work? Is it like a motorized tool you use or is it like a sharp diamond tipped one?

The etcher I am using is a small dremel-like tool. It has a multitude of tiny diamond tipped bits in all sorts of shapes and requires a very steady hand (it isn't like you can just erase and try again!). The process I use is to sketch the icon onto the glass with graphic pens (the glass distorts the image as you are etching if you try to tape paper to the inside), then etch. I really picked it up for the ability to create personalized gifts for friends/family.

I have really been having fun with it on a number of projects: a set of 6 rooting glasses (for flower cuttings) for my mother on her birthday detailing different local flowers.. which has turned into her requesting a set of wine glasses to match her china pattern (/sigh).

I did a humour WH40k cup for myself and my addiction (I think I might add an aquila to the other side):

I caught myself looking at shot glasses in the store the other day and thinking that chapter symbols would be fun happy.gif . Father's day is coming up... hm. The only thing is that we hardly ever drink! But, I guess displaying them would work too.. ok new project to add to the list!

dremel-like tool? So the tool rotates? I mean it doesnt "hammer" like a tattoo-pen then? Because if it rotates I guess it wouldn't be to difficult using a dremel with the correct bits for it. Gotta look into it sometime, seems fun. gran_risa.gif

Like the ReCaf mug. Can't you do one for us anglophiles out there who prefer tea over coffee? (a mug with the famous Ciaphas Cain quote: "Got some tanna?" would be epic cool.gif )

Actually, I drink both (the mug is in use as I type holding a wonderful brew of Chai). I almost put 'Tanna' on it instead of recaf, being a Ciaphas fan myself, but changed it to recaf since it is more of a catch-all term. I could always put 'Got Tanna?' on the other side.

wow u did both of those, thats profetional level their awsome, though putting the chaos and imperial symbols togther is diferent!
