Painted backsides on dial-couters

By sigzo, in X-Wing

Hey all,

Painted up a few dial counters for my X-Wing squadron. Quite pleased with the outcome.

Since I like a hobby part of the game, I'd love to see a group of threads we people can show of their modeling or painting so they don't get lost in the general forum. :)

They look great, really do. I would be wary of using them in tournaments though... I'd love to play against someone with a marker on the dial, makes it easier to work out what they chose! just need a turn or 2 to crack what part of the dial it's on and bam.

Edit: Not meaning to be off, as genuinely think is great paint work.

I see your point but can still just turn the front part of dial. will make harder to mind read

They look cool, but the other guy is right FFG reminds us not to mark the bottoms of our dials for a reason.

Would be nice if we could have our dials look as awesome as these in a tournament setting. Alas...

Looks amazing and absolutely love em!

The rules don't say you can't modify the back of dials. It just cautions against making them "asymmetrical" to avoid giving away the maneuver. I've painted the plastic part red on the back of my dials to indicate ownership. That wouldn't go against the tournament rules.

Tournament FAQ

"Players may mark their tokens and their maneuver dials to indicate ownership as long as the function of the component is not compromised. However, players should be careful not to mark the backs of their maneuver dials in an asymmetrical way, or in any way that may indicate to their opponents what maneuvers they have selected! "

I know.

These are Asymmetric.

Hence the "would be nice..."

Assymetric isn't illegal, just cautioned against.

Seriously, I know.

The way you phrased things made it sound dubious. "Would be nice" implies you can't but wish you vould.

I understand where that could be confusing and I apologize for not being clearer than that.

I was using "would be nice" as in "would be nice if we could have beautiful starfield images like Sigzo's our dials without out the possiblity of broadcasting out maneuvers to our opponents" becasue they look amazing.

Those look really nice!

I am trying to figure out how your opponent could figure out your maneuver from just the back of the dial though... if only the top rotates then what's it matter what the back of the dial is? You could mark the back with a compass / protractor, and you still wouldn't have any idea what the dial is set to unless the edge of the top half of the dial is marked or isn't aligned.

I guess I just answered my own question. :D

Pay attention to where the notch is. That said, I don't thinknanything says you have to hand your opponent your dial for scrutiny, so keeping it secret isn't a huge issue. Just don't pass around your fantastic artwork.

I guess you could try sanding down the notch...

Those look awesome..

To jump in on the discussion.. if you need to try and guess your opponents move so bad that you're gonna try to figure out the dial from this.. stop playing the game.. you're not the kind of player most people want to play against... if you're that competitive... I dont wanna play you...

Seriously.. this is a game, and that mentality isn't conducive to fun.. which is why I play...

For sure!

Honestly, I'm too busy worrying about what I'm gonna do, and where I think they might move to, that I dont have time to scrutinize someones dial long enough to try to figure out what starburst matches up with what move.. and there are 3 of them fairly similar.. lol.. to even think someone could do it is a little crazy.. but if that's your game..

C'est la vie

But I do envy the guys that can paint that stuff.. lol.. I'd love to do all my bases that wat.. and dials, just for fun... and when the phantoms come out.. would love one of those painted completely like that.. that would be hot.. haha

Thanx for the reply guys. As I said in my opening post, maybe we need a gallery area, since this belongs there and sadly most of the discussion is about rules and not the dials :)

That being said, I can see your point but I don't think it as much of a problem as some may think.I think that without close inspection it would be very hard to locate what manuever is where. Not to say it can't be done.

And what would happen if someone would figure out that a said maneuver would be at the "star" and then I swap out for a similar backed dial were the "star" is on a different maneuver ? Would people be willing to gamble a game on reading a move from a dial ?

Anyway I think oneway zoomed it up pretty good :)

Did you use an airbrush for those effects?

Beautiful. All I did was label the backs of my dials to indicate what kind of ship they went with. Kept getting mixed up during planning which dial went with which ship.

Did you use an airbrush for those effects?

Indeed I did.

They look really great!

However, I planned to paint mine that way also, but then I figured that the would be as great as mirrored sunglasses in Hold'Em tournament. :(

Great job, I almost wish this was a more hobbyist type game. I know there are repaints and things that can be done.

I don't think you need to worry about whether someone can "read" the dial. They would need to really be paying attention to what you do and how you do it and have a eidetic or photographic memory. And if they cannot see the cut section then they will have no clue what you chose.

Thanx for the compliment.

Yeah, and if I spot someone trying to "read" the dial. I can just hold them in my hand (after I select the maneuver) and then place them on the board after other dials have been placed.

Good plan,

was only trying to point it out, awareness of these things is key... and I know I can be a sneaky so and so at times! and maybe others are the same.

I like having fun guessing moves to myself, it doesn't help me as I still go plowing in with squints and get blown up lol
