tyrant

can tyrant (and others like it) be advanced while unrezzed with cards like shipment from kaguya or trick of light?

Tyrant say they can only be advanced while rezzed. Shipment from Kaguya and Trick of Light say you place/move tokens to a card that can be advanced. So Tyrant is not an eligible target for those cards while it is unrezzed.

The only card (currently) which can advance Tyrant or Woodcutter while unrezzed is Tennin Institute.

can you explain why the institute can place a token and shipment and TOL cannot. 2 cards say place advancement token. the other says move

Tennin says place an advancement token on a card - no further stipulation. You can advance ANY installed card, even a Snare! or PAD Campaign.

The others specify that the card must be a card that can be advanced. While unrezzed, Tyrant and Woodcutter can't be advanced and so are not legal targets.

Hell, Tennin can place advancement tokens on runner cards or even IDs.

Tenin can place advancement tokens the runner's installed cards, (programs, hardware, and resources) and these are often good Trick of Light batteries for this reason. But it can't place tokens on an ID (either yours or the runner's) as it is not considered to be "installed," likewise, it can't place the token on a card still in your hand or in Archives or Heap (hence no Archive Junebug.)

Actually it CAN place tokens on IDs - Lukas rules on that. You can't do anything WITH those tokens however, (not even ToL) so it's a wasted effort.

As Feesh said. Lukas ruled that you can in fact place tokens on an Identity.....it just is a complete waste to do so.
