Incorporating FFG Dice Symbols In Word Documents

By DavenQuint, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi all,

So one of the things that I think would make crafting my own home-brew adventures a bit easier is the ability to paste in the various dice symbols in my GM notes. So if I'm writing a section of my notes, it'd be great to be able to say:

"For every *insert Success symbol* the PCs have, reward them with an additional insight into Pabla the Hutt's organization."

Unfortunately, I have been entirely unable to copy and paste the Success symbol in my docs!

Is there anyone who can help with this? I'd like to be able to paste in Success, Advantage, Triumph, Failure, Threat, and Despair symbols as well as the colored dice themselves reflecting the difficulty of a task. Right now I can write out "an Average [<><>} Mechanics check, but it'd be nice to be able to actually put those diamond-shaped ability dice in my docs....especially if I need to be able to upgrade one of those dice to a Challenge die!

Any help here would be amazing! Thanks!

Thanks Desslok. This has everything I need in one location. I tried copying and pasting the symbols into my word doc but only get words instead. For example, I tried copying the Setback die, but when I pasted it in the word document, the word "brown" appeared. Hahaha.

Should I be using a specific font?

Forum doesn't play well with some icons.

Eh, as close to the advantage as I could dig up...... :P

You have to import the font. I don't remember how off the top of my head, but it's pretty easy.

Yeah, just save it somewhere (say, your desktop) and then install it from the control panel. That or copy it to your fonts directory - that should work too.

In Windows 7, you right-click the font wherever you downloaded it and then click "Install." On a Mac, I'm not sure; you should be able to pull up a Help file that can tell you, though.

Thanks for all your help everyone. I was able to download it and install it for Windows 7, but even when I change the font to EotE Symbols, as soon as I start typing it changes to New Courier. Also, what is it that I'm supposed to type to make the symbols appear in the Word Doc?

Apologies for being such a neophyte here...

The symbols are mapped to certain keys, but you have to figure it out by trial and error (it's been a while and I no longer remember). You can also use the "Insert --> Symbol" menu option in Word, which gives you the images to pick from.

So those last symbols would mean you've rolled Sikhism?

And my day has been made...

"I netted 4 Success, 2 Threat and 1 Sikhism!"

I've been looking for the font for a little while. Thanks.

As an aside, you can just look at the Character Map program with Windows to get the keys or just copy into a document. Using the solid colored icons, change the font color for the dice and add an outline. If you're using Office 2010, outlines are in a drop-down when you click the Text Effects button (a glowing A), next to the buttons for Highlighting and Font Color.

What I did with this excellent font is to type them in, color them using a color picker and the downloadable Long Arm of the Hutt PDF, then I keep an Evernote with the symbols for easy copy & paste.

Once you've installed these fonts in your system's font-mo-tron, they're available to pretty much every app.

Something I do also is have all the symbols with their appropriate colours laid out in a second document that I have open all the time (along with things like generic stat blocks etc. Then I can just copy/paste the symbols without having to switch fonts and change colours all the time.

Amazing! Thank you!

Are there any form-fillable character sheets that are set-up to handle these symbols?

How so? I'm not sure what you're getting at, but I'm sure something could be done up.

Yes, but don't ask me where I found them. The version I use is kinda cool, as you input the various skills, or even if you don't have the skills, it calculates each roll and displays it in the appropriate die icons next to the skills on the sheet.

That is likely Caied's character sheet:

The sheets all seem to handle the green and yellow dice for skills, but if they can input the blue Boost, black Setback, white Force die, Force pip, Advantage and Success symbols, I haven't seen how that works.

Inputting non-textual symbols into arbitrary text fields on a form-fillable PDF? No, I doubt that's even possible.

Even after you've added the font? Why, I just added 3 setback dice to my form-fillable W-4 PDF.

Mind filling me in on how to do so? When I try to copy/paste symbols from the provided font that I've saved in a Word document, I just get the corresponding letters instead, and can't seem to change the font in the box to Edge of the Empire symbols, before or after typing in the field. Also, my understanding was that each field had to be set to a particular font, which would make doing this impossible.

So, care to share the process you use, please?
