Difference kinds of players..... Please read.

By warrasmus, in X-Wing

First and foremost lets make the assumention that we all love X Wings

Some of us might love it because it is starwars, some of us might love it because of the game mechanic.

i think that most of us is playing the game and hanging out on this forum because of a combination of nerd-fandom and brilliant gameplay.

I don't believe that two players is 100% alike, we all have diffence approach to the concept "to play and think about a game( this being a boardgame but the same might be implied to other multiplayer games).

But I do believe some aof the bad wibes on a online forum like this might arise because we have difference view on the game and the concept of gaming.

It might be helpfull to consider which kind of player you are and which kind of player you are communicating with on a forum like this.

This is only a really simple way of representing difference kind of players and I believe that most of us is a combination of these 4 kinds below:

The Explore:

They delight in mastering the internal mechanic, like building t the perfect "focus squad" or the they do great analyse /number crunching on the stats of the difference ships.

The Sportsman:

They mainly regard the game as a match. socialising on a forum like is a relaxing method of discovering( and sharing if they have sportsmanship) knowledge about how to play and win the game.

The storyteller:

These guys love lore and they a really excide about That Leia finaly is coming to the the game. They favor authentic representations of their beloved universe. They love to talk about the balance about lore and game mechanic.... (when Falcon and Slave 1 was released they got both so they could replay the famouse chased scene from ESB) or they might claim that a ship mismatch the representation in the movies, comics or videogame.

The social gamer:

the game is merely a backdrop(the coolest backdrop ever), a common reference. Inter-playing relationships are most important. they wish to understand why you chose to paint your Falcon blue and not red when repainting, not because they think the color is wrong but they want to understand why YOU (other players) chose to paint it in chosen color.

Please feel free to adress this topic if you disagree or did not understand what I wrote. English is my 2. language and i have some mild form of dyslexi.

It's extremely hard to fully categorize people into simple lists. It's much more accurate to say that their attributes exist on many different axes.

People can have differences and be respectful about it. Others have differences and can be nasty about it, which is unfortunate.

People are better off if they care about what they have to offer more than what they can get (but not doing away with caring about what they get entirely). If someone doesn't like who they are spending time with, they should dust off their feet and go somewhere else rather than force a change.

Next x-wing tournament, I;m wearing a Star Trek shirt (not a red shirt though) :P

well first of all pls edit ure post mr i created this thread it was hard to read it written in black thx btw.

well iam kinda a mix of the sportsman/the explorer and the social gamer its mixed in these properties

Sportsman: 25% well i have many lists and i do even share lists i see competent.

The explorer: 15% i try to get the best out of all my upgrade cards and pilots but do not care about the win ratio that list could or will have

Social Player:: 60% i do care alot of the things others tell me like hey look at my customized falcon and such cause me and my friends in the warhammer 40k club ( 8 members who do play x- wing aswell) do care alot of painting and customisation and the lore u tell me with that minature or flier in that case if that x wing with the custom color represents u in the universe or not. ( going to paint a tie interceptor in the colors that will represent me but that lies in the future ;P i still need some. SHIP THEM TO GERMANY ALREADY DAYUM !!!

about the star wars lore itself iam a huge fan of star wars clone wars, the computer games like empire at war and forces of corruption and KOTOR. well i love the prequel movies more episode 1-3 pretty awesome i do like 5 aswell but iam no fan of 4 and 6 ;P. well that said i do not care if people do love or hate me cause of my lorecareless but hey aslong as i can play alongside ya guys iam happy ^^

I am definitely a storyteller type character. I have some friends who are the same - I actually bought the TIE Advanced just so my friend would play with me and say, "I have you now!" :)

To me, the miniatures game is the best thing since the 1990s games that represent the excitement of X-Wing combat while still maintaining a relationship to canon descriptions of the ships. Too many of the videogames make the ships the same as each other with different skins for the sake of balance.

... he said, without a trace of irony...

I'm something of all of those at different times. I enjoy talking about building clever squads (The Explorer), I'll play a competitive game (The Sportsman) with a squad that I can build a story around (The Storyteller). All the while playing said game I'll be chatting with my opponent about how they see the game (The Social Gamer). So no one of those describes my gameplay. I would think it is the same for most of the players on here.

There are two kinds of people in this world - those who think there are two kinds of people in this world, and those who don't.

The font in the OP blends so well into the color of the page that I find it unreadable, therefore I refuse to read it. That's what kind of player I am.

I like Star Wars.

I loved the original trilogy; great memories watching it with my dad, being Darth Vader for Halloween, being a part of the "Star Wars Kids Club." Really enjoy most of the extended universe stuff too. Han Solo wasn't born in Mos Eisley Cantina as an adult, so I wanna know where he came from. Can't find that out from the movies, so it makes sense to dig into the extended stuff.

I like toys.

Who doesn't? I never really grew out of my love for toys. If I see a cool LEGO set, or a detailed R2-D2 action figure, any cash in my wallet swiftly disappears.

I like board games.

Board games are to video games, as books are to movies. Big difference is that in board games you literally CAN make up new rules to add on top of the games existing mechanics.

So that's what kind of gamer I am; I'm a Star Wars fan who likes to game with Star Wars toys. With the key word being "game," the whole reason I'm into this game is because it is FUN. Fun for different reasons, sure! But fun nonetheless.

I am guessing that is why a majority of people are here as well.

There are two kinds of people in this world - those who think there are two kinds of people in this world, and those who don't.

There's two kinds of people in this word. Those who can extrapolate from incomplete data

dude, change your text color, black is hard to read on this background, it hurts my eyes, im old.

well first of all pls edit ure post mr i created this thread it was hard to read it written in black thx btw.

To be fair, it's also kind of hard to read your post . . .

But yes, please change it to white text, OP. It's hurting my eyes to try and read the dark text on a dark background (it's one of the design no-nos that is taught in Public Speaking class, btw).

oh boy...

You can be whoever you want to be. You can fill some, none, or all of these "labels" at all times. Nothing makes people shut down/incited faster than trying to brand them into specific roles.

Fixed the color. Sorry for the sore eyes, it was a mistake

The reason I posted this post is because I read another post where two guy was talking about the design and purpose of the wings on a Tie-fighter. They had had totally difference view on the purpose, and I really liked both explanations.... Suddenly they got kinda mean to each other.....Which ruined the post and the jolly good mood on this forum.

I do believe that some of these topics go of the rails because we might have fundamental difference view on gaming and that we all might become much wiser if we remember this!

I did not want to shoehorn anybody into a stereotype, actually my purpose is the opposite: To give some nuance to how difference people might view things differencely.

I dont think anybody is only a certain kind of player.

My view on gaming change according to who I play against, when a play with my brother we use the game as a medium, mostly we just talk, play a little and talk some more. Then when I play my best friend we become mortal archenemies for an hour or two

well it worked look he changed it ^^ and no no SARCASM AND IRONY BECAUSE OAM THE PERSONIFICATION OF THOSE WORDS !!! MUWHAHAHAHAHAHAA *force coke*

This is going to turn into a casual vs hardcore argument, isn't it? :(

I'm casually hardcore. :P

I'm casually hardcore. :P

Is that like being militantly apathetic?

I'm casually hardcore. :P

Is that like being militantly apathetic?

It's more like being occasionally strong opinioned.

Or technically correct, which is the best kind of correct.

I like being militantly apathetic. It means I get to complain loudly without having to actually get up and march in protest lines. :P

Four types of players... my doesn't that match up nicely with the idea that there are four personality types where the balance of those determines what a person's overall personality is.

Also reminds me of the MtG player types: Timmy, Johnny, Spike, and the social gamer type.

I always thought there were nine types of players, and that these types could be graphed on a rectangular coordinate system with the x axis representing Lawful --> Chaotic and the y axis representing Good --> Evil.

Possible the representations for Xwing would be:

Casual -> Hardcore

Good Sportsmanship -> Bad Sportsmanship
