Need ideas for the pilot actions

By unonameless, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Since Gain the Advantage, the only pilot action, is not available to Speed 3 freighters, help me come up with fun things for our pilot to do during space battles! Trying to improvise every round gets a bit strange after a while.

Sudden turn. Speed 3+, Silhouette 1-4. Suffer 1 (or maybe 2) vehicle strain. Pilot check vs Opponent's pilot (+1 if faster, -1 if slower) opponents lose advantage and upgrade one difficulty on the next attack. Just the idea off the top of my head.

Let's get more, I want my pilot to feel overwhelmed with choices!

Well for starters there's gain the advantage lite, its an opposed check, details in the book.

But more in the realm of flying smarter rather then trying to bypass dogfighting rules...

Run silent, shut down all systems and drift on backup Batterys, you can avoid detection, or if well timed you can look disabled by a hit that didn't cause any serious harm.

Stealth trajectory, reenter on a flight path that mimics a naturally falling bit of space debris.

If multiple ships (or tricksie use of decoy pods), fly in formation, make yourself look like a military VIP, or ship escorted for detainment, or a derelict being towed.

terrain... I ran one chase through the Giant Jungle Trees and valleys of Cholgana.

People fight for something at a location... not empty space.

Try to install a pilot-operated weapon system. This way the pilot can opt to use actions in combat to shoot the enemy.

If you are going to start creating actions for your games for Speed: 3+ instead of 4+, you can as well house rule that Gain the Advantage requires Speed: 3+ instead of 4+ right?

In Cartol's Emporium you can find some new ones in the house rules section. Although HappyDaze has it down with the opposed check as listed in the skill section.

I like "Gain the Advantage" to remain in the realm of fighter craft. It just ... makes sense. I just want pilots of bigger craft to also have something to do.

If your pilot has the "Full Throttle" talent, the ship's max speed is increased by 1. That would allow the speed 3 freighter to use Gain the Advantage.

While I allow Full Throttle's increase to fulfill the Speed requirement, the RAW is clear that this is not the case.

Well crap.

I am going to have a talk with our Bothan.

We still need to install linked auto blasters so I can shoot stuff while piloting our ship.

Is there a typo with the Krayt Fang's base speed? In the adventure it has speed 4 and no mention of engine upgrades. We upgraded it to speed 5 and with my extreme full throttle we're rocking speed 7.

If you look closely, you'll see it has Speed 4 and a Strain Threshold of only 14. Together these indicate it has the High-Output Ion Turbine already installed.

Thanks the last time we actually looked at it was in July and probably didn't realize that at the time. I'll have to tell the GM about it and refund our moneys and reduce our speed by 1.

To OP, all you have to do is offer your pilot the High Ion Turbines, and he'll be able to gain the advantage, legally.

Brings up a new question.

Are you sure that a freighter pilot can't fire his dorsal/ventral turrets from the cockpit alone, or are you suggesting that the pilot gets his own dedicated forward mounted cannon on the cockpit? If the former, I can't find the rules that specify you can't ever shoot the turrets from the cockpit.

(scratches head) I think you could make the targetting computer fire the cannons forward... but could a lone pilot in a YT-1300 fire at a TIE behind him, with no Line of Sight from the cockpit, using the computers?

Flying in a dogfight is a complicated thing, so I'd say the pilot can't fire anything unless it's locked to a single fire-arc (a la XWA where the turrets can be locked forward). And I'd say it'd be pretty difficult to fire at any arc other than forward, adding at least a Setback for having to look at some panel with a rear-video-feed, or an increase/upgrade in difficulty.

I've done this before and failed horribly..
