Playing against the Lambda

By Stone37, in X-Wing

The Imperial shuttle is one bad mother.... And I got dropped hard last time I played against one. The build was Omnicron + Heavy Cannon, Rhymer + Proton Bomb (which stayed behind the shuttle), a Tie-I and a Tie Fighter (which shot down the side of the board to flank)

Thoughts on how to play against this beast?

If the Shuttle does not have an Engine Upgrade, you can easily flank it, or get behind it. Without Boost, it has the turning radius of your average continent. Go wide, get behind, and enjoy your tasty tasty damage.

However, if they give it an EU, what it lacks in dial-based maneuverability, it makes up for in the sheer amount of distance it can fly. Sucker goes fast in a straight line or gentle turns like that, kind of like a charging cow.

They can take a lot of pain, and hand it back to you, however their turning is their real problem. Take out escorts then ride it at a safe distance from behind and you'll be alright. Watch out for the breaks, as if you ride it too close and over shoot it as it hits the space brakes, you'll open yourself up for a face full of pain.

And that was the issue, the bomber with a proton bomb. I'll try taking it slower next time and hit the bomber first.

If possible I save the shuttle for last, even if it was engine, as it's still less maneuverable then pretty much all other ships.

Another good tactic is (assuming you have the ships for it) get into range 1 and blast the heck out of it. It only has 1 evade with 10 hit points so they can go pretty quick from some 4 dice range 1 attacks from multiple ships.

Ok, so the Lambda + HLC is a moderate threat. It does dish out 4 dice of damage (with a moderate reduction in crit capabilities). Instead of trying to take this slow, you want to hit it hard and fast and get behind it. Your primary targets should be the TIE Interceptor and Fighter, then the Bomber. For this threat, a loose formation is best, because you want to avoid clustering too much. Remember, that bomb has to be dropped before the Bomber moves, so as long as you avoid it, you should be good. Considering sending a sacrificial lamb out to coax the bomb. Or act as a blocker for the bomber. They won't want to drop that bomb is Rhymer is getting it too.

Ideally, you want to race down the sides. If they place the Shuttle in the middle, they are doomed. If they place it on one side, overshoot it. It's clever to protect the shuttle with the Proton Bomb.

Here's an idea, when you overshoot it, don't move straight. Do a 3 hard turn. That'll keep you out of the bomb radius. You won't be pointed the right way this turn, but you can lazily turn to catch it next turn. Your opponent won't necessarily expect that. This would be especially effective if the ship you use is higher PS than Rhymer.

In the end, however, accepting a crit or two is preferable to staying under the guns of that beast.

What? I'm just talk'n 'bout Lambda.

Great advice. I'll give this a go next game. Thanks!

Someone doesn't know who Shaft is ...

...can you dig it?

You'd be surprised how many people move in slowly on the shuttle. Trying to shoot it down on the approach as opposed to getting behind it with most haste. Shoot out vs it, is the mistake, maneuvering behind it then shooting it dead that way, is the right choice.

Who loves you babe?

The lambda's dirty secret is that it dies easy to focus fire. That's the second reason engine is so good on it. You can kill it in a lucky round.

Engine? How so? Please explain.

The engine upgrade makes it much faster which (if flown right) increases it's Survival, SableGryphon Had a couple really good threads earlier about how to fly the Pearly Void Rhino.
