Store Championship Battle report

By Torresse, in X-Wing Battle Reports

I got second place at Pittsburg with the following list:

Alpha

Alpha

Alpha+stealth

academy

academy

Howlrunner+determination\

every round I set up

T I T

I H I

Won the first round rather fast

Lost the second

Won the third

First round had 2 (or 3)-gotta do math in a minute- sabers all with push the limits+ howlrunner. Fel with push the limits and stealth

Second round was against Kronos (I think) which was a skill 4 bwing with advanced sensors, a roockie, dutch with Ion, and an A wing with push the limits (skill 4) The bwing might of had an additional something.

last guy had darth vader, howl runner, and 4 acadamy ties

First match----

First round I set up in a 2x3 formation in the left corner, shot straight up first two round. he set up in a diamond in the center. first round straight second round he banked. I lost some 2 hull on an academy and took a red manauver=dmg on howl runner. killed an interceptor.

next I forced a collision with all his guys, took down sootner, left him with Howlrunner only. Then I took out howlrunner, no points lost.

Second Match----------
This was the informal championship round (he got first place at the tourny, I got second)

I set up same way, he sets up catecorners to mine. I fly straight fast, he flies his x wing and a wing fast, his bwing mid speed, and lags behind with his dutch. second round his awing shoots off and boosts to start comming about. His X-wing slows down, and the bwing and the ywing keep their slow pace.I turned my swarm hard 3 towards his force. his y wing and bwing (not even halfway accross the board) banks towards me, his x xwing (almost accross the board) turns, and his a wing speeds up towards me and is just outside of range.

I banked fast towards the center of the board , his Y wing is within shooting range, his bwing does a kiogran turn (expecting me not to bank) His dutch ions my corner tie, and his a wing fails to do work. I made short work of his ywing.

I move slowly (causing a collision I intended to stop my tie from hitting an astroid,-however it was a stupid move because next turn, they both will hit it...) but keep everyone within range 1 of howlrunner and, I then finish off the bwing and take a crit on howlrunner (again, I cant make red maneuvers without pain)

Now the game looks like this, 1 damage on tie, 1 crit on interceptor, and did 1 crit via an astroid on an interceptor, Hes down to his xwing, and tie. He brings up the fact that playing this game out would be a waste of time, but wants to keep playing because there was nothing else to do... I tried to end the game fast and take out his xwing so I over a couple of rocks (ended up parking 2 of my ties on those things) he ended up killing off two of my interceptors (my stealth interceptor is still alive.) I take 2 damge on my ties from astroids get his sheilds on his xwing down, I then run over another astroid (or two) and fail to shoot with half my remaining ties, but score a crit on his xwing (gave him a stress) My next move wasnt pretty easy, I ran and parked on another astroid losting a 3rd tie, my interceptor gets shot up, his a wing his behind me, his x wing is flanking, and I am scattering at this point. his xwing gets a crit on a tie lowering the agility, my interceptor kills his xwing, and howlrunner kills herself by kiogranning....

now its 1 awing (full health and sheilds), 1 tie fighter (1 damge, got the crit fixed), 1 tie interceptor (1 hull remaining) my interceptor almost got away from the awing, but fails to lose him and gets killed. a 4 minute warning his called at this point, so I send my tie fighter straight to the awing to fight it head on, but he evades, focus, and target locks my tie fighter (he saves his focus for defense), we do no damage. since i knew the tie fighter couldnt handle the awing getting three actions, I decide to cut my losses and run away with my fighter since he was going to take no risk at all. I didnt stall on time, and got easily 5 more turns in (with him shooting at my rear) before our game ended on time. I forced him to take a modified win. -my first tourny game to come down to time ever-

Match 3----

My last game lasted 3 and 1/2 rounds before my opponent scooped his guys up and surrendered.

we flew at each other, my ties killed 2 ties and hurt vader to 1 hull remaining. next he bumped into each other and I kiogranned behind his exposed flank. He said it was a lost cause and picked up his guys off the table. He was new to the game and I explained to him the learning curve to the swarm, and a little bit of tactical advice.

After the first round ended so fast, I got to size up the competition, and knew there was only going to be one game I had to actually worry about. It happened to be the very next match. Although there was a guy I rode with from my local store, and several other players who knew more then just the basics, I thought I could handle them.

Nice write up there. I still maintain that you should have had that second match. I think you killed my B wing without it getting a single shot off. But that pesky little A wing that everyone ignores has seriously paid off recently. In the last few months, that A wing has won about 5 battles by himself that I should have lost - the best comeback was 2 bombers and a TIE vs. my GSP w/ PTL.

My first match was against the guy you played your 3rd match against (I believe it was at least). Academy x4 + Howl + Vader. He setup 3 academies in a line on the his right side, and the remaining academy w/ howl and vader on the left side in a line. I setup towards the center, and then quickly sped over to the vader squad, leaving the TIEs out of the fight for several turns while I dealt with vader+howl. And then it was just mopping up the 4 academies with my higher PS pilots. Sadly, that game went to time and I barely got the full win out of that... The guy was taking like 5+ minutes to set his maneuvers since he was relatively new to playing "a swarm."

The third game was against Luke, Garven, and two Reds. He set them up XXXX with literally no space in between them. With the exception of Luke, his guys only went forward, and a K turn. Meanwhile, I setup similar to how I did against you, A X Y B, and kept using the AdvS to barrel roll to the right and bank left. I ended up flanking with the A, X, and B, and he could only shoot the Y. Needless to say, I made quick work of that squad.

I would have liked to have played against the dual YT, just because it's been a while since I've done that, and it seems like it's a relatively easy list to do okay with. I'm glad to read though that that one ion attack Dutch got off messed you up as much as it did :) . I look forward to a rematch, maybe at regionals?

I'm guessing you had a small turn out if you only went 3 rounds?

I like the second match "Jedi Mind trick" that was used. Saying that "playing out the game would be a waste of time (presumably because you were going to win!) but still wanting to play because there was nothing better to do" was a GREAT move. It may have made you overconfident which then led to some errors allowing Khyros to squeeze out the win. It's sometimes scary the little mistakes that can be made which will turn a certain victory into a defeat.

Indeed, it was rather small. Which was disappointing in itself. But further disappointing because half of the field there really had no clue how to play competitively. One of the guys I played with didn't even know how to setup asteroids. The other one kept forgetting actions and then as we were shooting, would retroactively throw tokens out on the board... I would have had a problem with this if he had even an outside chance of winning.

- the best comeback was 2 bombers and a TIE vs. my GSP w/ PTL.

I fear this is going to haunt me for as long as i continue to play X-Wing.

If only I could like something multiple times :)

I want to say 4 people out the 7 knew how to play. I went to the tourny thinking it would be an easy win every game I played (but then Khyros showed up...) this tourny was about 2 hours away from my regular fishing grounds, and were looking at around 20-30 there.

No matter what math you can crunch, an a wing, and an xwing can still pull a win against 3 interceptors and 3 tie fighters

btw as I looked over at your first match I think early on he claimed a little bit of a lead on you with points, I was hoping he would take you out so I didnt have to play you

Yeah, it actually came down to the last turn. He had Howl (with PS0 crit) and an Academy (with a roll at the start of combat crit that we both forgot about) both with 1 hull, vs. my full health A wing and an injured X. Clearly I had the advantage, but at the start of the last round, I only had a modified win (he killed 54 vs. my 70). Getting the hit in on Howl to finish her off on the last turn gave me the full win.

I don't really remember being at a disadvantage, but it's possible that there was a time where it was "even" and he was slightly ahead point wise.

oh yes, I wanted to shout, "dont forget the crit", but I knew that would be bad sportsmanship... he was already ticked off for the laser pointer thing....

... an Academy (with a roll at the start of combat crit that we both forgot about)

Was there a crit token next to the base? I know most players think those are a waste, but I find them invaluable next to the base to remind me that there is an ongoing effect, either on my ship, or more importantly, on my foe's ship.

I think there was. Or maybe it was against Torresse that there were crit tokens that were forgotten. *shrug. I consider it my fault for missing it. I made sure to NOT miss them against Torresse, and several times that screwed him because he forgot.

Nice write up. I like how people are starting to respect the Green PTL A-Wing.

Crit effects aren't passive effects you have a choice to remember or not. I've forgotton that crits are on my ships and it's always best to back track if at all possible or find a decent remedy to the situation. If the next turn is starting, letting your opponent choose your maneuver works. It won't take too many turns like that for the player to start remembering.

That's why judges float around. If it was possible to have a judge per table, that would be great, but they can't be everywhere. I honestly don't care if spectators point out slips of memory in regards to the rules.
