Second, Third, etc. editions

By bsmith23, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

WEG had 2 editions, right? WotC had 3. What is FFGs track record with multiple editions and rules tweaks and such? Just wondering what the far future holds if they hold on to the license. Not that I'm looking for any changes, mind you; at the moment I'm quite happy.

There's already at least a second edition out of the EOTE Core Rulebook, it's got a code with NOV13 on the back where the first edition has MAR13.

Someone posted that it includes some of the existing errata but not all. Instead of the insert w/ Boba Fett's helmet on it, that's part of the book itself.

That's a second printing, not a second edition. There's a huge difference.

Yeah, I was afraid I wasn't clear about that.

I cant think of what was a major change from 1st ed. WotC to Revised Edition offhand, but there were big differences when Saga came along (vp/wp to hp and damage threshold, talents, loss of Force skills to name a few). I wasn't a gamer in the WEG days, so I can't speak to them.

Also compare to DnD, ADnD, 3.5, 4th, Next. Legend of the Five Rings also springs to mind.

EotE works as is and doesn't really need a second edition because it's too story based. If they DO make a second edition, I would like to see miniatures being used. FFG doesn't even have to sell any miniatures for this to work, as there's already a ton of these on the market. It would feel sooooo good to get rid of the range system in this game.

If FFG released a book called "EotE: Adapting the rules to miniature based play", I would pick that up immediately. Story is cool and all, and I rarely have combat, but when I DO have combat, I want it to be strategical, honestly.

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you, there. I found Saga Edition's constant shilling of WotC's miniatures line in the core rulebook to be rather grating. Everything was listed in "squares" instead of meters which made converting to gridless/mapless play tedious and difficult. (Yes, I know 1 Square = 1.5m)

And no, it wouldn't really work for FFG to tell its customers to buy out-of-print, expensive, and difficult-to-find miniatures that are manufactured by a different company in order to play its game. It just doesn't make any sense from a business standpoint.

Obviously, there's nothing wrong with enjoying tactical combat in an RPG, but I don't think it would be appropriate (or even desirable) in Edge of the Empire. This just isn't the game for that.

Has FFG editioned WFRP? I know they havent editioned the 40K stuff no matter how bad it could use it.

Technically WFRP is 3rd edition, but it's the first iteration of the game under FFG..

A second edition of Dark Heresy is in the works now.

It's not even been out a year yet!

I don't think even Capcom or WotC would do a 2nd edition of a game within a year.

And as regards minis, it's really not that kind of game. Yes, it can get frustrating abstracting combat all the time, but that's the point. Most of the recent games I've played - 13th Age, Numenera, One Ring - seem to abstract combat too. I think it's something of a backlash against the minis-heavy games like 4E.

I think we'd be looking at a potential second edition, say, in a few years after all the core books for this one have come out. Plus, it appears FFG is dedicated to releasing source books for all the cores, I think we'll be in this edition for a good long while. If, indeed, there even is another.

Whether or not we get a second edition of any of the books in this game is going to depend on fan response and if FFG still has the license in a couple years. There's a lot of speculation that the contract expires in 2015, and if WotC/Hasbro thinks they stand to make enough money off the license and they decide to get it back, it's going to be awfully tough for FFG to outbid them.

With WotC, the only reason they did the Revised Core Rulebook less than two years after publishing the Original Core Rulebook for their d20 version was that Lucasfilm mandated a new corerulebook using images from Attack of the Clones. Now JD Wiker and his crew could have simply done as asked and not make any real changes to the game, but they instead saw a great opportunity to fix a bunch of things that needed fixing. How good of a job they did is up to the individual reader, but at least they didn't just do the equivalent of slapping a fresh coat of paint on the existing rules and call it day.

There's also the matter of if FFG really thinks the game needs a second edition. If the only major changes that need to be made are a couple pages of errata and maybe some clarified text to address things in the FAQ, then they can probably make do with a revised version that includes the errata/clarifications.

What? A second edition? Of this perfect game? Sacrilege!

The latest version of the rules should be soon available with AoR.

I just got my cope of EoE core book and Beginner Box set from Amazon. Both have NOV13 on the barcodes. Does this have corrected errata or typos fixed?

Yes. All of the errata contained here for the Beginner Game and here for the Core Rulebook are included.

However, some things such as the rules for the "Linked" weapon property and rules for repairing ships in combat in the Beginner Game are still slightly different than in the core rulebook.

Edit: Although, FFG never got around to correcting the Aurebesh typos. The header for "Force Sensitive Exile" sill says "Force Shensitive Exile" in the Aurebesh text. I hope they fix a similar issue in the Age of Rebellion Beta. Instead of "Ace" the Aurebesh said "Aecheo."

Thanks Yoshiyhu, so theoretically I dont need to print/have the errata list if I bought the most current print edition?

Correct. Now, they may release an updated errata document at some point in the future, but for now as long as you've got the latest printing, you're good to go.
