New ships with SW VII?

By frostrunner, in X-Wing

Just thought I would start the discussion about SW VII and wether or not we will see new ships.

Maybe some of them might head our way? What you guys think? Im kinda excited to see what the new movie will bring to the universe.

What existing ships would you like to see in the next movie?

i think we will see lots of new EU stuff - perhaps stuff that doesnt exist in x-wing yet. they have a gr8 marketing opportunity to make links to the new SW movies with x-wing. The question is, will they?

Did you see any prequel trilogy fighters/designs in the core trilogy (and yes they could have inserted them in the remastered, super-sepcial, HD digital, excuse to charge you more money editions as cameos :P )?

It's about the same time gap between RoTS and New Hope, as there will be between RotJ and Episode 7. So other than a possible cameo, don't expect much screentime from 20+ year old fighters.

Episode 7 will have new ships/fighters for sure.

That's not entirely true - especially with the Alliance. The Y-wings they are using are Clone Wars vintage. The ones you see in ANH have been stripped down for ease of servicing. I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility to see some old familiars like the X-wing and Tie Fighter - if nothing more than for the familiarity. And we are guaranteed to see the Falcon. I imagine we'll see a bunch of new stuff (can't stop the marketing juggernaut that is LFL/Disney now can we?)

Now i know its a bit of a stretch, but do you guys think that FFG will get the rights to add them to XWM? Im a hopeful optimist =P

I highly doubt that FFG has a limited license. The question is, will the Episode VII be there because FFG wants it there, or because LFL made them to make the ships?

LFL did force Episode I content into the old Decipher SWCCG, and that more of an issue than integrating PT or new stuff into this game.

1) Honestly... Would anybody be that disappointed if they just featured slightly updated versions of the same ships from ROTJ? I know capitalism demands we make a new franchise item that can be marketed into new products, etc. But would anybody really be that disappointed if it kept all the ships from the movies (Waves 1-3 fighters) and just did it really well? I'd much rather keep with the same things, maybe make secondary ships like A-wings and TIE Interceptors more prevalent, and not rush the pace for marketing sake. Heck the established ships are still the main bit in all the EU stuff anyway and the general population isn't familiar with A-wings, B-wings, as much as hardcore fans are. They hit the sweet spot of being both new and established.

2) Has anybody seen this? Indie mod of ANH DS1 battle to feature more background ships and it looks PRO.

I think you're both right.

I expect to see X-Wings and the Falcon in the movie, but not as the 'main character ships' like they were in the OT. They'll likely be refereed to as the ship that Luke or Han keep around and won't get rid of even though they're outdated.

The Alliance used Y-Wings that were quite old, but they didn't have the advantage of being a government with the funds needed to buy new ships when they wanted to. I can't imagine that the New Republic would keep using old ships when it has the resources to provide new ones.

Clone war era huh? I don't recall seeing them in Episode III? You think they'd still see service during that flim's time since the clone wars were still dwindling down, especially if they were new during the clone wars....

Again, expect a cameo at BEST.

We will see new fighters and I'm sure they will be just as awesome as the ones we are looking at with nostalgia in our hearts.

Of course there will be new fighters..... they have to sell new toys.

That many extra ships looks silly and takes away from the desperation of the situation. They were a small force against overwhelming odds, adding a ton more ships ruins that illusion. Thanks for sharing it though, nice to see fan-made enchancements.

Edit:

So the Rebel forces numbered 32 fighters, I guess the 2nd version does help portray this fact, but it still feels like they removed some of the desperation feeling.

I thought we were talking about the Clone wars...

Papamambo pointed out that the Y-Wings used in the OT were clone wars vintage and you questioned him about that. I pointed out that yes they were fact used in the clone wars, even if it wasn't in the movie... The Y-Wing came in at the very end of the clone wars, and the BLT-B model came in pretty much at the very end of the war, so they weren't actually used much because they hadn't made it to the front lines yet.

Tech doesn't seem to advance in SW nearly as fast it does for us. So if they're still using Y-Wings in the Rebellion Era, then it's likely they'll be using X-Wings in the New Republic era.

Not as much, and not often because they can now provide better ships. But a 20 year old ship is not that far fetched in the SW universe.

We will see new ships. Even if they are called the same thing as EU ships they will look different. Movie people are all about recreating the wheal.

Just look at super hero movies. They reinvent their costume for every new movie, even when their is no story reason why they would.

Look at the Star Trek relaunch. We will forgive the actor changes out of necessity, but they were supposed to have gone back in time to the original series Enterprise, yet it looks totally different.

We will get new ships, even if they are supposed to be old ships.

You also have to remember that A - the X-Wings have been updated in the books, with new better versions (much like the F-18 Hornet is no longer in Service, but the Super Hornet has taken its place) The X-wing variants run from the T-65 A and B that we're all familiar with up to the T-65 XJ series that were flown during the Yuuzhan Vong war. B - The X-wings are iconic. They're not going anywhere. I would say the same most likely applies to Tie Fighters although we're not entirely sure just yet whether or not the Alliance (or New Republic) will be fighting the Imperial Remnant or some new foe. My money would be on the fact that we'll still see them in some capacity though.

Disney does not like the EU. I highly doubt they will use anything from the EU in their trilogy.

There is no such thing as EU anymore. From everything I've heard in the past few months, everything that has been put to print, screen or computer/console is considered Canon. (At least as far as official sources go - obviously fan made stories are not included). This means any book or comic that has been printed is fair game as far as Disney is concerned. I can't understand or fathom why Disney would count out 85% of materials for Star Wars because it's considered EU.

It used to be that the only thing considered Canon was what was put to screen - the movies. Television was next (various cartoons and things like the Ewok Adventure and Ewoks Battle for Endor etc.) Books came next, and if you are as old as I am, you'll recall the fact that Lucas had placed a moratorium on publishing of material in the Star Wars universe - the Zahn Heir to the Empire series was the first published work since the Han Solo Adventures, the Lando books, and Splinter of the Mind's Eye were published. Even Splinter was a stretch for Lucas at the time, as it was the only book at that point that he allowed to be published that took place DURING the events of the Galactic Civil War (which was a major big deal for him). The Solo books (Han Solo at Star's End etc) and Lando books were prequels that really had no impact on the Star Wars story.

So, it's really doubtful that Disney would shoot themselves in the foot and discount 23 - 24 years worth of books, comics etc just to preserve your nostalgia. There will be a mix - I'm sure of it. I'd be willing to put money on it.

They havent' decided what they are keeping/discarding yet.

They've made it pretty clear they do not like the EU in its current state. Some people are likening it to taking a chainsaw to the current EU.

I don't expect much to make it out alive.

Star Wars isn't Star Wars without X-Wings and the Millenium Falcon.

Star Wars isn't Star Wars without X-Wings and the Millenium Falcon.

Unless it's the prequels, or EU set in the past or far future :P

You can pretty much be assured there will be a host of new stuff. JJ Abrams rebooted Star Trek and hey, look - new Enterprise. I would imagine the Artwork and SFX depts will be trying to create something unseen as yet. Take a look at ANH, X-Wings, Y-Wings and TIE fighters (and Vader's ship just so you could tell it was him). By the time ROTJ came out, we've got A-Wings, B-Wings, TIE Interceptors. Yes, there'll be new ships. Whether they'll reference ANYTHING we've seen already is anyone's guess.
