Dungeons & Dragons Attack Wing?

By theharrower, in X-Wing

Not sure if anyone saw this. Here's the announcement:

Dungeons & Dragons Attack Wing will ship in "late Autumn," according to Ziran, and like the company’s Star Trek Attack Wing, will feature the FlightPath engine developed by Fantasy Flight Games for its Star Wars X-Wing miniatures game (see "'Star Trek Attack Wing'").

UPDATE -WizKids has posted solicitation information for the Attack Wing: Dungeons & Dragons Starter Sets, which lists October 1 as the release date. The starters will contain three pre-pained plastic dragons with base and pegs, three maneuver dials, cards and tokens, with a tentative MSRP of $39.99. Wave One Expansion Packs, eight in all, will also be available, sold individually for $14.99. Wave Two Expansion Packs, three in all, will tentatively be available December 3, also with MSRP of $14.99.

"

It will follow the formats that we’ve defined with Star Trek Attack Wing, except this will be dogfighting dragons," Ziran said. "And the new twist on this is ok, you have dogfighting dragons, but what about ground troops? And so now you’re going to have giants, and ballistas, and magic users fighting the dragons up above and the dragons raining fire down on the guys on the ground. It’s a very interesting take."

The product configuration will be the same template and SKU configuration as Star Trek Attack Wing, which is a box set with visible contents, and visible boosters.

Original article here . Kinda weird if you ask me, but interesting that they are mixing ground and air combat so I thought I'd share.

The DnD'er in me says HELLS YES!, The avid hater of all things Wizkids in me says Hell no! If the quality of the dragons/etc is as bad as the ST stuff, then I'll happily leave it be.

Dragons, yay! FFG's Flight System, yay!

WizKids... :(

I have bought some of the Trek stuff and find the game to be great. Sure the mins are terribadly painted but a quick ink wash and they look fine for minimal effort.

Don't let the lack of a paint job put ya off!

Wizkids does all the plastic minis for Pathfinder. The paint is poor, enough that most figures have to be stripped and re-painted; However, the sculps are very good. Look at their White and Red Dragon Evolution sets.

"I find the lack of paint....disturbing!"

Wizkids minis are no where near as cool or as well painted as FFG. But Attack Wing is a fun game I really love it. There are a lot of things about it that are different enough from X-wing to make the game feel fresh and different. I'm not going to say which rules set I like better, but I think Attack Wing adds some fun things.

As for the figures of Wizkids stuff I wouldn't call them great. But as pre-painted figures go they are at least average. Look up re-paints of Attack wing stuff and it is really cool.

If we get a Flight Path Game with Dragons I will buy it unless the sculpts are really bad. I mean who hasn't wanted to fight dragons against each other.

I must agree Wizkids is not so great with their paintjobs. A collection of 400+ Heroclix in my room can confirm that. The sculpts can be good sometimes but the paintjobs usually remind me of a child who has just learned to draw and is coloring things in a colouring book outside the lines.

I haven't tried Star Trek Attack Wing. I have too many hobbies I buy into as it is but that wouldn't stop me from trying it out (but I wouldn't buy it really).

At first thought I have to say this feels like such a cheap thing to do. I think Attack Wing would do better had Wizkids actually focused more on the quality of miniatures and the design of the cards. Then again the third wave of expansions is out or is coming out, I'm not too sure tbh but that means it must make them some money.

Not a D&D person myself so I'll stick to Star Wars anyway. Just find strategic maneuvering dogfights with dragons to be a bit comical and I expect the miniatures to be painted by someone who has a bad case of the hiccups *see jumpy*.

I just got into Attack Wing a week or so ago, but the game itself is great. The biggest mental hurdle for me is using TOS crew alongside TNG/DS9 crew.

For the miniatures, I still have a box full of the Star Trek Micromachines from the '90s, and I'm using them instead of a lot of the originals. So far I have the Galaxy class, Constitution class, Miranda Class and Excelsior class, and I'm using Micromachines for all of them. They look much better.

I'm using the AW ships for the Klingons, but I'm planning on repainting them. That greenish-gold just doesn't work for me.

The announcement makes me happy, the company is suspect, and I want to like it... just lots of trepidation on my end.

This and the lack of proper scaling are what keep me from buying into it (and the fact that certain ships/cards are only available via tournaments).

Yeah, I'm not a fan of exclusive stuff because I'm not gonna be the guy that goes to every tourney. That is one of the reasons why FFG and the way they handle their distribution is awesome.

It also probably means that Wizkids will cut back on the attack wing stuff to concentrate on the new `Shinny`

Seems like a way to make more money with less effort to me! The game system itself has been around in part since the days of Wings of War. FFG has made it amazing. Wizkids bought it from them as a game system and now wants to use it again to sell their crappy minis!

I agree FFG minis are by far superior to Wizkids. It feels like they are using the D&D brand to come up with a bastardized version of Warhammer or D&D itself? The fact of the matter is, the game system works for what it has been designed to do not to move people and dragons!

WizKids leave this idea alone and find another way to sell your plastic badly painted minis! If I were an Attack Wing player I would worry about this idea being the new shiney as already stated. Attack Wing as the game is a good one, but it is really X Wing anyway with some tweaks.

My 2 cents.....

Then there would be problems using the interceptors in the same battle as Tantive IV

One of the best things about having star trek is all the different playable races/factions. It's 3 player out of the box not counting all the other races.

Now all we need is a Babylon 5 attack wars wing :-P

I wonder if those of us who are suffer slightly insane megalomaniac delusions can have X-Wing VS Dragon dogfights.

If you can have large worms in space, why not have some dragons trying to eat a Rebel or Empire squadron. Would make an interesting third faction.

Ok, I'll go and take my medication now.....

Edit: if D&D brings rules for ground units, could there be.... dare I say it .....Battle for Hoth if the rules work.

I was looking at the production schedule for Attack Wing, and its insane. There are another five ships due this month, five more in April, and between June and September three more EVERY MONTH!.

Its possible they may well scale back or drop the line because they will have printed everything by then.

Actually TIE/in fighters saw active duty first in about 1 BBY, so a confrontation between the two would be possible (but unlikely).

I have to admit, as frustrating as it is to wait for the x-wing waves to be released, my wallet never seems to complain. If this stuff was getting churned out at the rate of Attack Wing, I'd have to knock off banks in my spare time to keep up.

I guess one difference is you don't need as many duplicates of every ship in Attack Wing as you do in X-Wing. I'm seriously considering eight Z-95's.

Yeah, I was already thinking how cool will it be to have dragons vs the federation or having dragons vs the empire!

Don't let the lack of a paint job put ya off!

It's not even the paint job. It's really the horribly bad scale keeping me from playing the game. It could have the best rules in the world, i would not touch it.

Scale for dragons is probably not the issue, but i would advise Wizkids to manage the quality of the game a lot better, or it will be a huge flop!

And then Wizkids is adding ground forces (aka, let's re-use more of the sculpts we're making). I don't think this is going to work well.

If they leave ground elements to the cards and the miniatures are the Dragons, it'll be cool.
