100 points +?

By Scoundrel, in X-Wing

Hi Guys,

ive been playing this game since day one but this is my first post ever here. Ive been following a lot of threads, though, and ive learned a lot from peeps in here. So a thanks would fair, i guess. So thanks! : )

Anyways, here is my question: Me and my play buddy have been playing 100 point squads for ages now, but we recently began to play 110 points in order to be able to experiment a bit, test new upgrades/ships/combos and just break our routines in general.

Thing is that 110 is so much more fun, honestly. But i feels like cheating. At the same time, though, i feel as if the game has undergone so much change and has so much more gear available to players so that it could be justified.

Do any of the better players in here ever play more than 100 points, or is that just considered lame?

Do you Guys think the 100 point limit is outdated or will the format never change for tourney play?

Also, i would love to play an easy to set up, story driven campaign, that is fun and simple. i saw some stuff that reminded me of the campaign from xwing vs tie fighter: balance of power once, but i cant find it now. Any ideas?

100 is more restrictive towards builds than even a 101 build. That's actually what the game is designed around: it forces you to make hard choices in fleet building.

That being said, 150 is starting to get thrown around as a larger fleet variant. Try it out sometime :D

I'm of the opinion (and I've stated it in other threads) that lists naturally come to 105-115 points, especially on the rebel side (since the 12pt academy seems to be a good thing to add/remove in most imp lists). Therefore, opening up the point total to 110 points should give you so much more freedom and synergies and whatnot... moreso than adding another 10 points to 120 points (this is the same reason I suggest demoing games at 55 points instead of 50 btw... 50 points just beg for academy x4, and rookie + SU x2 or something to that effect... those extra 5 points actually allow you to build a real squad).

However, I believe this is 100% intentional. It forces tough choices on the player as far as what does he want to keep / cut to get under 100 points. As such, I feel like you're cheating yourself out of some of the fun of squad building by building to 110. But to be fair, I would agree that the lists would tend to be more fun to play since you can fit everything you want into 1 list.

Yeah, we have been playing 200. never tried 150. why is that a good number, and how big should the play area be then?

Again, why is 150 better balanced and how Big should the play field be? What about good, easy to play campaigns?

You should play whatever point total you both agree on. I find that 125 to 150 makes support ships really come into their own. Jendon with bombers is full of trade offs at 100, but at 125... Oh yeah! I think they should stick to 100 for standard tourneys for some of the reasons mentioned above, but I think with epic play, you will see tourneys set up for more than 100. We don't know what the points value on something like the tantive is going to be, but given is scale and capabilities compared to fighters, it would not surprise me if that ship alone did not cost 100 points, so I look for point creep to occur with these new formats and ships. The point of points is to give you a mechanism to balance 2 opposing forces. Don't constrain yourself to 100. Have some fun with bigger battles. It's a game, have fun!

A friend and I swap better a lower points limit or if we are playing at the weekend go for a much higher limit. We've got up to about 400 points. Its lots of fun but will take all day and you need a fair amount of space!

One of the things that I have found enjoyable is that you end up with several dogfights going at once and then a ship or two may break out unexpectedly and head for a different fight to turn the tables there.

As your games are showing having the points set at 100 is a balance designed to encourage making tough choices. As DP and Khyros both point out just adding a few more points opens up all kinds of options. Some may think that is good but others will point out that things are designed for that.

Why do you think the Rookie Pilot comes in at 21 points? The answer should be pretty clear: FFG did not want the X-Wing x5 squad to be available at 100 points. You use 5 more points and that suddenly becomes a very real possibility. With a 100 point standard the designers can actually plan how many of a given ship could appear in a single squadron. If a ship costs over 33 points you should never see more than two of them in a squad. 33-26 point allow for three ship squads, 21-25 for four ship squad, 17-20 are five ships squads, and so on. The reason an A-Wing cost 17 points? So you don't see six of them in a squad.

I play in a lot of group games, and we tend to play 50 points per player +10 points per team. So a 3 on 3 game is a 160 point game. Works out well and is a lot of fun.
