Ep IV-VI Force powers used?

By AK_Aramis, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

I believe Vader was always on the same ship as the person he choked, so that could just be Long or Extreme range or some such. The comm giving him clear line of sight.

The other question I find myself asking is if I'd ever let a PC have such an ability or if that's in the firm purview of 'Sith lords.' As long as it's not a PC ability, I don't need hard rules for it as this is very much a design for intent system rather than stressing about NPC's=PC's.

That's a great list.

It would also be interesting to see a contrasting list that includes the prequel trilogy.

It seems like the biggest element the prequels added was more lightsaber stuff (though Luke v Vader in V and VI cover most if not all of this as well).

Could be, but not guaranteed. Executor is a big ship.

I always thought the admiral was on a different ship.

No, the admiral was on the Executor. Vader was simply in his ready room/recuperation chamber, which is elsewhere on the ship. Now, it could have been a long way away, as that ship is big, but truthfully I don't think it would be that far away. Everything Vader would be doing on that ship would be near the command bridge, so it would make sense to have his quarters nearby. Now, I don't know if it would necessarily be in the bridge superstructure, but I certainly don't see it being any further than somewhere near the base of the bridge. couple of hundred metres away at most.

I realize we may have moved on in this topic, but I couldn't let this go:

One method could be Influence, with the Magnitude Upgrades activated enough times to go to Extreme Range (they were on the same ship) and the base power itself triggered multiple times.

An Influence-based power, you say? "Stop choking yourself, Admiral...."

However, if I'm going to give this post any actual content, I'd say that this is probably the best way to do it. My first instinct is to point out that Vader can Force choke main characters (who are clearly PCs), except we never see him do it. I'm sure there's EU stuff, but I'm not familiar with any such sources.

Anakin chokes Padme in Episode III, but there are two mitigating factors: 1.) whether it counts or not, as many people would consider the prequels Apocrypha compared to the originals' Holy Trilogy, as well as the fact that this thread is concerned only with the OT Force powers; and 2.) the medical droid later says there's nothing physically wrong with her, she's just losing the will to live. That second bit sounds like a Strain-based Daunting Critical to me.

Again, in relation to the prequels, I'm sure there's EU that has this happen, most likely The Clone Wars. But I'm racking my brain, and while there's plenty of times Anakin choked others or Dooku choked others, I don't think I've ever seen the supposed "main characters" get choked. Rex might be an exception, since I think he was choked by Ventress early on... but again, this thread is dealing with the OT.

Based purely on mechanics, the Influence power is really the only way within the actual rules to deal damage directly to the target. Yeah, it's a bit weird on some levels, since the target would still be free to act as they wish on their turn, but for a GM that doesn't want to bother kitbashing a new power solely for an NPC, it's a simple solution to the problem.

The Move power requires you to either hurl an object at the target or hurl the target at something/someone, though I suppose as long as the Force user has at least one Strength Upgrade and the hurl objects Control Upgrade, the GM could use that to replicate a Force choke, handwaving the "need to throw" aspect. The Discipline check could get a bit funky, since the base difficulty is determined by the target's Silhouette buy also modified by anything that makes the target more difficult to be hit with ranged attacks, though I guess that too could be justified as the Force-user having difficulty getting a perfect line of sight to their intended victim.
