Understanding Engage and Ranged attack difficulties

By DandareBR, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

OK Guys,

I just played the Begginer box but I still have some questions about attack and the dificulty to hit depending on the range of your target and depending if you are in engaged range or not. So I tried to create an ultimate table with all the possible combinations and I would like to know if it is right. Here it is:

Situation Weapon Used Target Distance Difficulty Reference
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Engaged Melee Engaged 2 Dices (pg 204 Rulebook)
Engaged Melee Short NOT POSSIBLE
Engaged Melee Medium NOT POSSIBLE
Engaged Melee Long NOT POSSIBLE
Engaged Ranged Light Engaged 1+1 Dice (pg 205 and 210 Rulebook)
Engaged Ranged Light Short 1+1 Dice (pg 205 and 210 Rulebook)
Engaged Ranged Light Medium 2+1 Dice (pg 205 and 210 Rulebook)
Engaged Ranged Light Long 3+1 Dice (pg 205 and 210 Rulebook)
Engaged Ranged Light Extreme 4+1 Dice (pg 205 and 210 Rulebook)
Engaged Ranged Heavy Engaged 1+2 Dice (pg 205 and 210 Rulebook)
Engaged Ranged Heavy Short 1+2 Dice (pg 205 and 210 Rulebook)
Engaged Ranged Heavy Medium 2+2 Dice (pg 205 and 210 Rulebook)
Engaged Ranged Heavy Long 3+2 Dice (pg 205 and 210 Rulebook)
Engaged Ranged Heavy Extreme 4+2 Dice (pg 205 and 210 Rulebook)
Engaged Gunnery Engaged NOT POSSIBLE (pg 210 Rulebook)
Engaged Gunnery Short NOT POSSIBLE (pg 210 Rulebook)
Engaged Gunnery Medium NOT POSSIBLE (pg 210 Rulebook)
Engaged Gunnery Long NOT POSSIBLE (pg 210 Rulebook)
Engaged Gunnery Extreme NOT POSSIBLE (pg 210 Rulebook)
Ranged Light Short 1 Die (pg 205 Rulebook)
Ranged Heavy Short 1 Die (pg 205 Rulebook)
Gunnery Short 1 Die (pg 205 Rulebook)
Ranged Light Medium 2 Dice (pg 205 Rulebook)
Ranged Heavy Medium 2 Dice (pg 205 Rulebook)
Gunnery Medium 2 Dice (pg 205 Rulebook)
Ranged Light Long 3 Dice (pg 205 Rulebook)
Ranged Heavy Long 3 Dice (pg 205 Rulebook)
Gunnery Long 3 Dice (pg 205 Rulebook)
Ranged Light Extreme 4 Dice (pg 205 Rulebook)
Ranged Heavy Extreme 4 Dice (pg 205 Rulebook)
Gunnery Extreme 4 Dice (pg 205 Rulebook)
* I haven't included the weapon max range. It is logical to think that a Small ranged weapon wouldn't be able to reach a Extreme distance, but I think it will eventually possible to have a small weapon with some tech that would allow the laser to hit at that distance, so I let all possible ranges on the table
** Whenever the dice pool shows "X"+"Y", It means that the first number is the range difficulty and the second number is the modifier for doing a ranged attack while engaged to the target or to other enemy.
I saw the spelling error on the topic title but I can't edit. Sorry about that

Throw that out. You are confusing ranges completely. The range on the weapon is it's max range, the range of the target is the range of the target.

The difficulty is

Engaged 1D +1 for Ranged (L) +2 for Ranged(H)

Short 1D

Medium 2D

Long 3D

Extreme 4D

All Brawl/Melee 2D

That's it.

My goodness your eyes must hurt looking at that chart you made.....

I sometimes feel they should have labeled weapons with "Max Range" rather than "Range", because this confused me as well when I first started with the system.

And those difficulties 2P51 lists are the BASE difficulty, the GM is supposed to start there and increase, upgrade, or add a setback based on the exact situation.

Now that I put on my reading glasses I think you have it mostly ok, it's just engaged that confused you. You are either engaged or you aren't. Think of engaged as in a fist fight with someone and they're trying to get the gun from you.

Well I can see now that didn't expressed myself cleary. The first collumn isn't the weapon range. It actually means that you are engaged to another enemy while attacking. I should probably named it 'situation' or something like that.

The regular ranged attacks are easier to understand. No problem with that. What I want to know is the difficulty to hit a character, in diferent ranges, while you are engaged to other character. For example, what is the difficulty to hit an enemy in medium distance, using a heavy ranged weapon while you are engaged to other enemy.

I would say you just add the difficulty dice for being engaged, so in your example with a Range(H) weapon you would add 2D for being engaged with a 2 handed weapon, to the 2D for the range to the target, for a total of 4D. Plus the opponent engaged with you would be able to add a boost die to a Brawl/Melee check against you.

That's basic rule interpretation. Now the GM may decide based on environmental or other specifics to the encounter that the engaged player can only fight with the opponent he is engaged with.

as per page 210 EotE CB under the heading Making Ranged Attacks While Engaged.

OK Guys. Thank your help.

So there are 3 simple rules to find the difficulty of an attack while engaged to an enemy.

1) Find the difficult dice based on the range;

2) Since there is no "Engaged distance" while dealing with ranged attacks, considered "Engaged" as "Short distance" (1 die)

3) Add the modifier for been engaged. If you are using a light ranged weapon add 1 die. If you are using a heavy ranged weapon add two dices.

e.g) Try to hit the an engaged enemy using a heavy blaster rifler.

Distance: Short: 1 Die

Modifier: Heavy ranged Weapon: 2 Dices

Total 3 dices

e.g 2) Try to hit the target at medium distance, using a heavy blaster rifle, while engaged to other enemy.

Distance: Medium: 2 Dices

Modifier: Heavy ranged Weapon: 2 Dices

Total 4 dices

That works even if there are other factors in place. I just find the distance difficulty (inluding all additional situations/effect that may increase the difficulty) and add the engaged modifier.

Waaaaayyyyyy more simple than my table :)

Not exactly. When you are engaged in melee and are shooting someone you add the +1 or +2 difficulty die. If you are shooting someone who is Engaged you upgrade 1 difficulty die to a challenge die.

Player A is engaged with Enemy 1. Player A shoots at Enemy 2 at Short Range with his blaster rifle: Base 1 Purple die, +2 Purple dice for him (Player A) being engaged = 3 Difficulty (Purple dice)

Player B is not engaged and shoots at Enemy 1 (who is engaged with Player A) at Long Range with his blaster rifle: Base 3 Purple die, +1 UPGRADE for the target (Enemy 1) being engaged = 2 Difficulty (Purple dice) & 1 Challenge (Red die)

Actually I was takling about attacking an enemy while being engaged. You add +1 or +2 difficulty to the die no matter if you are attacking the same enemy that you are engaged or attacking other enemy that is ranged from you.
