Expansions - which one to buy

By stanmons, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi,

I've played Descent 2nd edition now first time and loving it!

What expansion would you recommend as first one to purchase and why? Obviously, best contents in terms of campaign, classes, monsters etc is the key but I'd appreciate contents that is not only tied to that particular campaign the expansion offers.

really difficult choice

- Labyrinth of ruins if you want a new campaign

- either trollfens or lair of the wyrm if you plan to play again the base campaign

- in all cases, at least a lieutenant pack to add fun to your games

But if I were you, I would take them all (that's what i've done)

Grab all those you can.

If you don't like some, wait a little and make money reselling them on eBay.

Get "Labyrinth of Ruin" and a Lieutenant or 2.

Labyrinth of Ruin has more stuff than the smaller expansions and a full campaign.

Lieutenants add more options for the Overlord and replace the sucky tokens the games come with.

But yeah eventually you'll want to get it all.

I don't know about selling it on ebay though... I plan on having my sets forever.

I only evoked eBay in the case one does not like the game.

As the expansions go OOP rather fast, at least one could make some money by selling the expand when no more available on first hand market.

I won't sell my gear either,

I would say get them all as well, but if I could only have one I would go with Lair of the Wyrm. The Geomancer class is so fun to play with!

I started with Labyrinth of Ruin, purely because I liked the look of four new heroes rather than two in Trollfens or Wyrm. I was v pleased with it: new basic deck for the overlord (which adds plenty of replayability to the original campaign & to the one in LoR), four new heroes with interesting abilities & challenges, & plenty of loot. It's worked well as a start for me. I'm looking forward to seeing how the Shadow of Nerekhall (next 4-hero expansion) compares!

You dont mention price qualms, so the big expansion, of course! Either Labrynth of Ruin or the new one coming this March, Shadow of Nerekhall.
The main draw is another big amount of quests to play which could be tied in a whole new campaign.
Oh, and forget your worries about things "only tied to expansions".

I really like my trollfens expansion. I play D2E with my kids (4,6) it works on their reading and math and working within a defined rules set and we love the new heroes and the LT from it.

But I agree with everyone else I have all of the 1st ed stuff some in doubles and all of the 2nd ed stuff and love the game so get it all

I'm feeling a little burned by the small expansions (Trollfens and Lair of the Wyrm), I expected they would come with new campaigns. They don't. I won't be buying any of the small expansions... just don't see the point.

LoW has a mini campaign available online.

I actually in retrospect regret getting Labyrinth of ruin for one reason, and that' reason's name is Logan Lashley, he is incredibly overpowered, like mind numbingly so.

in our campaign he's paired up with Syndrael the Knight and he has a crossbow, which is an exotic weapon that on a surge adds plus two damage, he gets one damage from delver, 2 pierce from sleight of hand, and one pierce from his crossbow. So in all, he gets 3 damage for one surge before dice are rolled, and 3 pierce all for free. Since he draws two cards when he searches he will find all the stamina potions.

What will end up happening is in encounter two, he'll use Syndrael's heroic feat for a free move, pop 3 stamina potions and get a total of 16 movement, and be able to attack 3 times using his heroic feat, for an average of 6 damage with pierce 3, for a total of 18 damage that ignores any defense roll below a 4, and he can't be immobilized either so there is literally no way to stop him. So any quest that involves killing a Lieutenant or named monster, you will always always lose because there's no where on the map you can hide from 16 movement Logan that can't be immobilized and will pass any trip wire, or pit trap test. and LoR is 90% quests about killing monsters or Lieutenants as an objective. So heroes will win 90% of quests. Stay away from LoR and wait for Nerekhall, LoR was not play tested at all apparently.

He will single handidly suck all the joy out of being an overlord since with 3 pierce and the potential to easily do 7 damage, he can kill any act one monster in a single hit with the exception of 3 master monsters.

Just wait for nerekhall and skip LoR.

Get....none  . It's a dangerous spiral downwards before you'll want to own everything  .

I have two approach to this game. Play a bit of just the base game (maybe like 2 quests), then...if you decide you...

1. Love the game, will probably buy everything/most things, then: small box(es) + 1 LT pack which all integrate straight into base, then eventually big box down the road

2. Like the game, but just want to expand the base a bit and get more bang for your buck, then: big box + 1 LT pack, mostly integrates with base, then you get a whole extra campaign (doubles your replayability for less money)

(3.) If you want to spend the least amount of money, and find that it's just the overlord that is finding the game boring/too hard, then 1 LT pack is good. It gives the overlord more options, and more power. Valyndra, Alric Farrow and Bol'Goreth are the best/easiest ones to use off the bat.

I found LoR to be pretty balanced, it was very close between the heroes and OL with the OL actually winning in the end with Queen Ariad. Logan was never fortunate enough to get 3 Stanima potions when we played because he was picked on and knocked out. Basic II and Warlord were the cards of choice. Mimic was effective in stopping him from claiming treasures.

I think these issues are in every expansion - there are some characters combos that are overpowering in comparison to others. I don't think Logan is any more dangerous than Wildlander Jain or the Runemaster, Disciple or Beastmaster classes TBH.

why not gettings them all ?

what the purpose to buy a game and no expansions ?

Now, not everyone has money to buy all expansions for all his games - especially if one plays many different ones.

Of course, if Descent is the only one that one plays, buying all expansions is the best way to go.

It is at least more logical than buying the expansions and not the base game. ;-)

I don't see things like that.

I like a game, I buy everthing. I don't, I sell it. And because I really difficult, few games are good enough to me to be kept. So I think I can't understand.

pierce 3 and 3 free damage before dice are rolled, along with never ever being immobilized I think makes him the strongest character in act one.

Well, I cannot convince you that other people may disagree with you without being wrong.

But I can give you some examples :

- I have Agricola, basic game. It offers a lot of variety without the need of its expansions. Thus I didn't buy the latter.

- Arkham Horror has a host of expansions. I bought some (Dunwich Horror, Black Goat), but I don't need to buy more, even though it is a fine game.

- Talisman : I have all the expansions, but playing them all can overburden the game (not speaking of diluting the elements of different expansions in a big lump).

- Advanced Squad Leader : I have quite a lot of its additional modules (not speaking of the core modules), which would amount to several hundreds of dollars worth. But I do not buy everything, especially some historical modules (Tarawa, La Gleize), as they don't interest me and as they do cost a lot.

I do understand that someone wants every possible expansion of a game.

I don't see why you cannot understand that some people don't share that profile - either because they have limited budget or because they play multiple good games and simply would not follow suit for any expansion.

Typically, I have seen a number of posts of Descent players explaining that they won't buy all the Lieutenant packs or all the new V1 monsters & heroes packs.

I personally will make choices among those packs if and when they come out in French.

I simply cannot follow the expansions' rythm.

First of all, I always like to play one game or two, nothing more.

about prices, it's a matter of choices : buying all descent take all the budget of game, good for me, rather buy for a good game than having multiple

And, having all of descent, it means having the biggest game I ever seen (and maybe the biggest ever) and on top of all, it's why I love this game : there's so much and I will never be satisfied.

So, i'm with my game like with women : only one at a time, and generaly, I keep it years

You are of the "exclusive player" type and that is fine.

I was nearly as exclusive with ASL.

But with different boardgaming friends, who don't all have the same tastes, I must diversify my games.

If Descent had attracted more of my gaming friends and if they could have been involved on a regular basis, I could have been more exclusive than I actually am.

I am the same Rugal, two games we play exclusively Descent and Talisman for us :)

Looking at some of the expansions and prices, I really don't want to buy them but I know I will anyway.

For me personaly I love to buy any expansions in the order they came. The exception here could be lieutenant packs and Hero & Monster Collection packs. Lieutenant packs you can buy right after you have the expansion the are for and H&M Collection you cand buy any time.

I have my new corre set, I ordered 2 lieutenat packs and will buy first H&M Collection imediately when it comes.

Lieutenant packs you can buy right after you have the expansion the are for and H&M Collection you cand buy any time.

Lieutenant Packs can actually be purchased at any time and do not require the expansion that includes the lieutenant they came with. e.g. You can use the Bol'goreth Lieutenant Pack (which includes the Plot Deck and Agent cards) in the base Shadow Rune campaign with no other expansions involved.
