Dangerous Covenants off the boat and SHIPPING!!

By polyheadronman, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm disappointed in the species - they're all fugly and all have an identical 'low-life hoodlum' theme. Feels like the same race with different names. The ones in the Explorer book - Chiss, Toydarians and Duros - were all very different from each other...

Yep. Feels like we're getting vanilla, French vanilla, and vanilla bean (where vanilla = thug). Some material is better than nothing, but these are not the species I was looking for.

I guess it suits the Hired Gun archetype HappyDaze, but it still feels bland to me.

We get UglyThug, Fishy UglyThug, and Ponytail UglyThug.

Would have been nicer to see one that was human-like (Devaronians maybe), and something wildly different like Herglic I think.

One classic grunt type like those presented, one 'big guy', and one refined/finesse warrior type to represent the Mercenary Soldier/Demolitionist specialisations that aren't simple legbreakers.

Ouch! I like the Hired Gun, especially when they aren't thugs. Mercenary Soldier can be played as a classy professional, Marauder can be a noble space viking, and Bodyguard can be all Kevin Costner... or Brock Sampson. I hope the book isn't too focused on the thuggery.

True. We have two Hired Guns, a wookiee mercenary soldier who is a noble freedom fighter and guerrilla leader, and a chiss 'bodyguard to the stars' who has to look good while protecting the celebs.

Well, if it helps, think of the weequay as represented by Hondo Ohnaka, aka Minsc, then they are the talky flamboyant race.

Also beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And there is also the possibility, in regards to the Hutt Space book so many of us want, that the canon has changed and the servitude races are not anymore.

I am dissapointed that a large race like herglic didn't get represented. We have enough silhouette zero, let's have a two. Unless it's Aleena, then we can have another zero. Also for the love of the force, please tell me if the concussion rifle is in the booj!

Aw, shucks, it was actually a couple beers and family time. I'm not even 8 pages in yet!

Our species are Aqualish, Klatooinian, and Weequay.

Some of you are going to like the vibroknucklers as well.

All races from the original trilogy no less...excellent.

Did they include the Weequay Magic 8 Ball?

We have exactly one Silhouette 0 species (Toydarians) and (IIRC) the option for droids. That's hardly 'enough' of them.

Sorry to disappoint, folks, I realize nobody chooses greatness, it is thrust upon them. I will endeavor to clear my schedule to get some more reading done.

I would have rather have a droid "sub-species" than two Jabba skiff twins. I was kinda expecting a species from AoR; glad I was wrong.

I'd be interested as to what the new specialisations are supposed to represent - is a 'Heavy' a 'goon' as in gangster movies, or a heavy weapons specialist?

Can you spoil the career skills for each specialisation please?

Yah, was kinda hoping for Zabrak myself.

THIS! In all it's spiky-headed glory!

Zabrak are purdy. We have enough fugly species!

Spiky-headed glory FTW!

I know if I guy with spikes on his head showed up to collect for Milo the Hutt I'd pay up......

I'm hoping we see the 'PC races' like zabrak, togruta, etc sooner rather than later. I hope they are not all being saved for F&D.

Some of what we are seeing now seems kinda... niche.

I agree. The flip side I hope colonist isn't just all polite well mannered races either.

...almost like they're detailing the scoundrels and drifters that inhabit ...the Edge of the Empire (dun dun dun!)

I'm also curious about the specs, and specifically are all three new? I was curious if Demolitionist was just a rebranding of saboteur from AoR.

I'm more curious about what kind of vehicles are in this book. Anything interesting?

One interesting thing about the vehicles in the book is that there's a small section of "paramilitary" vehicles... Or more specifically quick modifications that GMs can use to modify existing vehicle profiles to ones that might be armoured and armed by a local militia. Most of the time, this can be handled with characters by modding and hard points, but this allows GM's to do it quickly.

So far, I like what I see with the book. I'm a fan of Hondo Ohnaka from Clone Wars, so the Weequay is a welcome addition for me. There is a LOT of kit, new vehicles, and even capital ships. Gearheads will love this book.

Also... The signature abilities rock. They'll be great for high level play.

Is there a new Specialization in the book, and if so, what is it?

There are three new ones, as listed here . Enforcer, demolitionist and heavy.

Hopefully UK should get it some time next week then. I seriously can't wait. Dangerous Covenants mixed with Enter the Unknown and Sons of Fortune should make for a far more interesting campaign in future.

**** my current lack of a group!

Dangerous Covenants hasn't arrived at our local shop yet, but I've been really impressed with the Career sourcebooks so far.

All the ideas for Explorers, which I was reading as we developed our new campaign, really got me interested in running an exploration-based campaign. Can't wait for future books!

You mean the one (singular) sourcebook, right? No need to inflate the praise beyond saying that you liked the one previous example.
